I had not included this in my itinerary because we are spending three full days at DL/DCA, and want to explore the rest of the area as well for the next 4 days (Hollywood, Santa Monica, Malibu, seeing two ball games - Dodgers and Angels, etc.). Now DH wants to know why we aren't going to Knott's. How does it compare to DL? For reference, I love WDW but hate Six Flags. He probably would like Knott's, but I'd rather do a hike in Griffith Park or visit the Getty Center. I do not want to spend another full day at an amusement park. We are not going to Universal. I don't think I will change our plans, but I'm curious as to your opinions on whether we are missing something phenomenal by not going to Knott's. Once we leave Anaheim, we are going to Burbank and staying there. How far is Knott's from DL? I know it's closer to DL than Burbank.

Thanks!

Knott's is like Disneyland (not really), but with spotty theming, one third of the customer service and almost no air conditioning. However I'm glad we went once. The roller coasters are crazier. The food is more expensive. Basically for the price we paid ($37) it was worth it. It's only 20 mins. or so away with traffic. In your case I think it is skippable.

Knott's is about 7 northwest of DL in Orange County (see this Google Map.)

Burbank is 35 miles away from Knott's to the north and west, all the way up in the San Fernando Valley (again, Google Map.) So FWIW if you're going to do Knott's, you're probably better off doing it while you're still in Orange County.

Knotts berry farms isn't that fun.. It's a less of a theme park and more like a kid section with a few thrill rides. It used to be tons of fun!! The berry jam with fresh whipped butter and hot waffles was a reason to make the trip! It was sooooo yummie! Food quality, overall park theme and ride interactions are nothing like they used to be. You should skip Knotts and head down to Sea World enjoy San Diego, mission bay and the beautiful San Diego coast!

On that note.. Griffith park with Los Angeles traffic isn't that close from Disneyland! The Getty is all the way on the other side off the 405 by Santa Monica. Which is really far in comparison to Disneyland. Santa Monica is a tourist trap and you can find much better beaches elsewhere!

Whatever you do I hope you enjoy your trip to So-cal' :) I grew up here and I would never leave. :)

We are in Anaheim for 4 nights, then we move to a hotel in Burbank for 4 nights, to be close to Hollywood, Getty Center (not Villa), Griffith Park, Beverly Hills, Dodger Stadium. We have plans to rent bikes on Thursday in Santa Monica, then drive up to Malibu to Zuma Beach for a dip in the ocean, then dinner in Malibu on the water at sunset. Maybe go back down to Santa Monica to see it lit up at night, or possibly go to Griffith Observatory if it's not too late.

Here's my take...I would say Knott's is better than your average Six Flags park, but I wasn't super impressed by it. That said, there are some areas that are quite beautiful and some nice classic rides- the Calico Mine Ride (missed the recent refurb) and the Timber Mountain Log Ride are both great. The coasters are more thrilling than Disney but probably not as good as your average Six Flags. If you do go, I would do it before you go to Disney- putting it in the middle of a couple of Disneyland days made it come of worse than it probably should have.

Well.. The Getty is off the 405.. You take the 134 to the 101 to the 405 to get to the Getty from Burbank.. The Getty villa is also off the 405 only you take a gorgeous trip down surface streets, the villa is in Pacific Palisades.

Beverly Hills in Los Angles traffic is still a push from Burbank.. You can take coldwater canyon or again the 405.. Griffith park is huge, and beautiful. I hike there all the time! I highly recommend taking in the natural scenery and enjoying the views.

I wouldn't waste my time in Santa Monica. It's an outdoor mall a block from the beach with LOTS of tourists! There are not a lot of good hotels in Burbank.. :/ I live here, by the equestrian center :) It so pretty but It doesn't sound centrally located to what you want to do..

Knotts berry farm after DL? You hate six flags? Save your money and time, go somewhere else for the day. If you like smaller parks, try Frontier City in Oklahoma City. We stopped there one day last summer when it was 102*. Made an entire day of it, lots of rides and shows. The entire day, including some t-shirts was a lot cheaper than knotts:groom:

It's probably my nostalgia talking, but I happen to think Knott's is a great place. It does have some of the big roller coasters to appeal to teens, but for me the main appeal is the history of the place.

It's often considered the first theme park, and was family owned-and-operated for many years -- holding its own against the relentless assault of the Walt Disney Company who outspent Walter Knott and his family. Disney even tried to acquire Knott's Berry Farm once as a second gate. It's the place where Steve Martin's career took off, after he had spent his younger years as a CM in Disneyland's magic shop. I could go on, but there are tons of articles on the net that would satisfy any theme park enthusiast's interest.

If you just want to go for the park experience, you should know that admission is cheap (when purchased online). You'll find that Knott's doesn't quite have that Disney quality, but it's a more folksy, laid back place.

(There's an old joke that Disneyland's competition is Knott's Berry Fun, but Universally acceptable.)

If you hate Six Flags you will not like Knotts.

I think it depends what you don't like about Six Flags - we did both Six Flags and Knotts last September. Six Flags was only open at weekend and it was a mad house and packed with groups of teens - we only managed to do 2 rides and we gave up. The staff we came across weren't very friendly.

We went to Knotts later that week on a Thursday and it was so quiet and we loved it. (also did DLR and USH in the same trip)

We are going back to Anaheim and Hollywood in a month and skipping Six Flags - its only open on a weekend again but Knotts is a must - we found the staff to be friendly and pleasant and didn't notice the food to be any more expensive than in other parks.
