Knock off purses. Why?

I'm not sure anyone who shops regularly at a thrift store could be said to care overly much about labels.

We shop regularly at thrift stores and yard sales (more of the latter nowadays, they have better deals) and we look exclusively for labels, not so much for snob appeal but because they tend to be made better. We also live in an area that has massive amounts of yard sales 10 months out of the year. We go every Friday and Saturday, some Sundays and off days for moving sales. During peak yard sale season it's not unusual to go to over 100 homes in a day. We've never seen a high-end bag for 95% off.
Keep in mind that we don't consider Coach or D&B to be high end, we're talking LV, Prada, Hermes, Gucci, etc. Plenty of fakes, never the real deal.
Clothing, you can find. Leather goods would be like hitting the lottery. Not only do you have to find someone crazy enough to put it out you would have to be one of the first people to arrive, because it would be snapped up in seconds.

You would have an even smaller chance of finding a deal like that at a thrift store than a yard sale. The donor would want a tax receipt so they would know its value. If they didn't an employee would either put it aside where they keep the more valuable items or save it for a relative.

I'm freaking out at your post.....I didn't know that Dooney had Disney bags. I just recently got into Dooney bags I've purchased two and now I think I know what my third one will be. Do you know if D&B still sells the Disney ones?

Thanks
Fran

i got my disney dooney last month at the grand floridian. it & the matching wristlet was my christmas gift from my hubby. I LOOOOOOOOOVE IT !!!! :love:as far as i know you can only get them on property, or ebay. i saw them at trendy in dtd, the grand floridian & the jewelry shop in magic kingdom.

It's been a few years since I ran that store, so things may have changed. But I will say that at the time the best for your money were Oakley (not everyone's style, though), Maui Jim, and, as someone already mentioned in this thread, Serengeti.

The funny thing is that other than Oakley, none of these are "vanity" brands. So, in this case you are paying for the quality, unlike the Gucci brand.

I guess what most people are seeing as an issue, is when people say that carrying a certain label makes them feel "proud" or something.

Thanks for the answer! Yay!

I don't get the pride thing either. Then again, I don't get feeling pride for my son's accomplishments, either, but plenty of people feel pride regarding their kids.

No, its a crime to steal a copyright, trademark, patent or anything else that falls under intelectual property in ANY country where those things have been filed by a company.

Does that mean that the copyrights etc need to be filed *in that country*? That might be where we're finding the lack of illegality, at least for past purchases.

My husband, whose mom is Korean and he spent a lot of time in Asia, would never buy a bootleg tape here in the States, but when he was in Asia in his youth, heck yeah he was all over it. You could hardly find an American-legal thing to buy back then over there! They were (and maybe are...on his very recent trip he was only drooling over electronics made over there that you can't get here yet...he doesn't know about movies and such, and obviously wasn't looking for dead cow purses for me!) found in the main stores, it's just all you could get then.

Interesting point indeed. Every country, infact every state got their own version of Copyrights law. While here in NY, and I assume in all other states it is illegal to sell but not illegal to buy, in some countries it is illegal to buy as well. I think no legal consequences is what makes it "OK" for some to buy replicas. After all when people pay fraction of a price and get all the looks, lables, numbers and so on, all they think about is what a great deal and rarely make effort to see that they infact support criminals. If they knew that at any moment police may enter this hidden room and they will be charged for illegal activity and get fine like $1,000 for example, would they actually do it? I do not think so.

Sorry but it seems like you care about status and labels more then your sister. When she buy it at the full price or maybe slightly discounted price, she has what to choose from. She probably goes for some particular style. You on the other hand grab whatever is there you found, and there are not much to choose from. So you get those bags for the lable.

:snooty:Oh good grief?!:snooty:

My "splurge" is vacations. I don't buy pricey things...but I have spent a pretty penny on vacations... I'll admit it.

HOWEVER - I don't look down on others that choose to visit the local amusement park instead of Disney NOR do I pass judgement by stating that "oh pleeease, everyone KNOWS ABC park isn't Disney and we all laugh at you."

Wow..just wow.... I'll never cease to be amazed at people.

oh please, why would you get then a falling apart, used bag when you can spend same money for a new, nice bag at any store like Walmart, Kohl and so on.

I wouldn't... I'd get the bag from Walmart. My problem is with the fact that anyone would judge anyone based upon what "label" they buy. On either spectrum.

Who said anything about buying a used falling apart bag? As you should know, most of the well made designer bags are made to last, so if you find a genuine one at a thrift shop it wouldn't be falling apart. Who would even look at a nasty, dirty, damaged designer bag. At least the ones I have found aren't, if they were I wouldn't buy it.:confused3

It seems like no one can win on this thread. If you buy fake, you're wrong. If you buy used, you're wrong.

I notice handbags on women if I like the bag. I don't try to figure out if it's fake or even what brand it is. I don't really care! I can't imagine hanging out with my DH at the mall making fun of women's handbags. The day my DH can spot a designer anything I'm in trouble.

The OP is my sister, and she bought me the D&B Disney wristlet. She told me she had to buy it for me because she knew I would love it.( As well as I am so cheap I squeeze a dime until it screams) I would never buy it for myself. (:guilty: sad but true) I love it.

Who cares. My very last bag was from Kohls, I do not care that it is not high end, so what, like it anyway. If you surrounded but judging people, sure it is hurder to ignore, but possible, do not let them get under your skin.

Like a PP I buy Coach for their quality, NOT their label. I have two Coach bags that I bought for 10 dollars apiece that look just as good as my sisters. I could care less about status, that's not me at all. I grew up in the broadcasting and theatre world in NY and ran away from all that bs so I could live my life without the stress of being "in fashion". It turned me completely off. But I DO appreciate the feel and quality of a good leather purse, but not the price tag.

Really well said. :thumbsup2

Some people find the amount Disney feels it can charge for a family vacation to be asinine. Your argument, really, could be made about just about anything.

Amen! That's why I don't go there anymore! I wasn't the mod of the Budget Board and the Orlando hotels board for years for nothing. I enjoy myself but never go into hock for it!:thumbsup2

Many peple shop at thrift stores only to find labels. One of my friends works next to such store. She checks it regulary. She actually found some, not much of couse and condition is questionable but she is ok with that, she cannot afford full price but loves lables.

I stand corrected! :flower3: So long as it's the real thing, go bargain hunters!! My Dior bag is second hand. It was from eBay and I had it verified by My Poupette (http://www.mypoupette.com/). They're great if you're buying online and want to make sure it's the real thing. :thumbsup2

I've got two Hermes scarves (yes, real ones!) and a Gucci purse that say the thrift store don't always know what they've got. I paid a quarter for each of these items. :cool1:

As for the rest, all a receipt to a charity shop says is that you donated something. As the taxpayer, you are responsible for assigning a value to an item, and, if the value is over a certain dollar amount, proving the amount of the donation.

You're also making the presumption that the person who purchased an item is the person who is donating the item, which is not always the case. In addition, considering the devaluation of designer goods and the fact that you only get around 33% of the value back on your taxes, sometimes it's just not worth it to both dealing with documenting the cost of an item.

I've got Miu Miu slacks, an Armani blouse, Theory, Hugo Boss, etc., at thrift stores. You must have missed the part where I said that you can find clothing. Clothes come in so fast and in such great quantities that it's easy for them to miss an item. Leather goods are a whole different animal, they don't come in as much and a high-end item is easy to spot.

What a bunch of gibberish  If someone is donating a $1000 handbag to a charity shop they are going to let them know it, they aren't going to just ask for a blank piece of paper because it's an item that would raise a red flag if they tried to claim it blind.

There is always the possibility that someone is going to make a mistake, an employee is going to put a valuable item in the bargain bin. It happens, that's why professional bottom feeders visit thrift stores all day long just in case. It just doesn't happen very often and if you come across a deal like that you lucked out.

I am not saying all thrift stores are this way but the D&B's, Coach's etc... found in the thrift stores here are fake, the ones I have seen anyway, and these stores try to pass them off as real. They also get pissed if you tell them that it's a fake!
But there are some really good finds at thrift stores :0) Last year a found my oldest a very nice Liz claiborne dress still had the Belk tags for $6.00
I also love the thrift stores and would like to find some real purses there but so far no luck...:(

There must be different policies. When I donate, I always get receive a blank form with the date and the person's initials on it. Always. It doesn't matter what I donate, from furniture to clothes. Always the same. They don't assign each piece a value and I don't either when I drop them off. I make notations for myself on a scrap piece of paper and keep the two together for record keeping.

Not jibberish (how rude) at all. I have donated everything from a pair of socks to a computer to Goodwill and they have never, ever written the value on the receipt. They may tell me to itemize the receipt, but I can write whatever I want. It's up to me to keep track of the value in case I am audited.

You must have missed the part where she said GUCCI PURSE.

That was a very thoughtful and sweet thing for her to do. :goodvibes

I'm really surprised that this debate still wages on. I didn't realize that people cared so much about purses or felt so strongly about telling others how much they don't care about purses.

LOL, I know and I can't believe I just wasted over a half hour reading through this entire thread
