Anyone had knob & tube wiring in their house and to replace it? How bad was the whole experience? How much did it cost you and how long did it take? TIA

We had it in our house, and it was a potentially dangerous and complicated mess. The main problem was that the system was not designed to accept modern electronics. The breaker to the stove would flip every time we tried to use the oven and two burners at the same time. There were also cut wires hanging in the cellar everywhere. Not good.

DH and his father have some electrical experience, so they did most of the replacement themselves. They had an electrician install and hook up the wires to the panel box. We also upgraded the service. Most of this work was done when we were not living at the house, so I don't know how much disruption it would cause if you were living there.

Good luck.

depends on where you live, the size of the house, and what exactly you need done. On a 3200 sq ft house in SC my estimate is about $4000, assuming they find no surprises when they start. In south NJ it would cost $7000+. Ceiling fans, chandeliers, etc, cost more then just rewiring and adding outlets.

I had to do this to a house a few years ago. Mine was pretty easy. I had a large crawl space under the house which allowed for easy access. I did most of the wiring myself and had an electrician install the breaker box and do the main connections.
