My new obsession is knitting while Ive been on Materinty leave ( other than spending all my time with my adorable son) Can I take them on the plane with me ( for something to do for the trip) or are they considered a weapon ?

Yes, you can; no, they're not; see www.tsa.gov for what's allowed and what's not; and somebody posted recently in response to a similar question that they use circular or flexible knitting needles on planes, for comfort - their own and that of the person or persons in the adjacent seats ;)

Ah, not so fast here! the OP is from Ontario, which may present a problem. On May 5, 2005 CATSA (Canadian TSA) returned knitting needles to the list of items permitted on flights.

HOWEVER Air Canada still has them as banned on their website, and on the picture boards at the airports. So while CATSA will allow them through screening, chances are that AC may ask you not to knit in flight.

Lufthansa out of Canada is the same.

AND well before 9/11 Air Ontario forbade knitting on their aircraft entirely. I have had my knitting confiscated and given to the pilot for 'safekeeping' during the flight
