Knee issues - Mucoid Degeneration of the ACL

Anyone ever heard of this?

I went to the Dr a couple of weeks ago and had an MRI of my right knee because of some discomfort I was having. I got the films today along with the report to take back to the Dr in a couple weeks but I read where it says I have 'anterior cruciate ligament mutoid degeneration'.

I'm figuring this means surgery is in my future but wondered if anyone else had experienced this!!

Could it be mucoid, not mutoid?


ETA, now that I don't have DS on my lap...I ask b/c a google gives me nothing for mutoid, but mucoid pops up many things.

Of course, I keep finding this sentence: "Only 1 case of mucoid degeneration of the ACL has been reported in the English-language literature."

Wow. Rare!

That same page I am looking at states:

"A debulking of the ACL was performed by a judicious excision of the degenerate mucoid tissue, taking care to leave behind as much of the intact ACL as possible. Releasing it and performing a notchplasty treated impingement of the ACL to the roof and lateral wall. The ACL was not fully excised in any of the patients. RESULTS: All patients were pain free and had recovered full flexion except one who experienced painful flexion beyond 120 degrees. None of the patients showed symptoms of instability. Postoperative MRI performed after at least 12 months in 2 patients showed some intact ACL fibers in a now-thinned ACL mass. CONCLUSIONS: Mucoid degeneration of the ACL is a clinical condition afflicting active middle-aged people without a single significant traumatic episode with a specific MRI picture. They respond well to a judicious arthroscopic release of the ACL with notchplasty."

I was wondering the same thing. My knee has started bothering me a bit when I have to bend down. Bending down isn't too bad, it is the standing back up.

Yes, thanks! I kept doing that all day and I don't know why. Even when I was telling my mom what the report said I put the 't' in there instead of the 'c'.

Rare, I know. I never have any NORMAL issues, everything within my immediate family is out of the norm. So, I'm really freaked out now that I know how rare it is.

My symptoms are just that I get pain on the outside of my knee especially if I bend my leg certain directions. It's not HORRIBLE but it's there. I also get discomfort when I stand for long periods of time. Walking isn't an issue though.

Sounds familiar- sometimes I'll be standing in the kitchen and start to turn and it will really hurt. Walking is sometimes a problem for me- but mostly it's going from one position to another.
