We are looking at getting a new oven, dishwasher and countertop. We're not going to get new cabinets, because our cabinets are relatively new...not installed by us, but by the previous owners. We like them...they are a golden oak color.

Originally we were going to get a regular oven. Now DH is thinking about double ovens mounted to the wall, with an island in the middle of the room for a gas cooktop. The double oven cabinet would be in the midle of a bank of cabinets.

Our problem is the cabinets. If we do the double oven mounted to the wall, we are going to have to put some sort of cabinetry around it, and there is no way we would be able to match our cabinets exactly, I am quite sure. Same thing with the island. If we put one in, I doubt we'd be able to exactly match the cabinets.

So what do we do???

My thought is to do something completely different, like painted cabinetry, maybe in a sage or forest green color, for the double oven and island cabinetry. I think that color scheme would look good with our oak cabinets, having 2 of the same color cabinetry would sort of "pull" the look together. Stainless steel appliances, and maybe some sort of countertop with a greenish and tannish coloring to it (whether it be speckling, like a Corian, or marble or granite with those shadings) to sort of blend all the colors together.

So, any thoughts, suggestions, websites that show different types of cabinetry with a wood and painted combo look?

Thanks DISers!!!!!

I'm looking into just moving my cabinets around a little bit and the remodeler that I've talked to said it's no problem to match the cabinets I have. They would just do a custom cabinet and find a stain that would make it match.

I'm considering the paint option also as it would be a cheaper option so I'm interested in other opinions or what they've done.

I was able to pick up several books at Home Depot & Lowes, if you have a home show in the area that is also a good place to look for ideas. Their sites or cabinet / counter top sites have some interactive tools to help plan.

I added a new wall of cabinets in my kitchen when I did our remodel last spring, and the carpenter managed to make them blend in perfectly.

However, I had my cabinets painted. I also had him do glass inserts on two of the doors, to break it up a bit.

I've posted my pictures so many times on here, that I'm afraid people are going to get sick of seeing them, but if you want, I can post them again. I have one pic, with the old wall of cabinets, and another with the new wall. You honestly can't tell the difference!

This won't really answer your question but I wanted to throw this out there:

When you get your gas cooktop on the island, will it be a downdraft cooktop or will you have an updraft hood above it?

The reason I ask is that I am here to tell you that downdraft, well, it sucks. I have a downdraft cooktop and after 10 years, the cooking has pretty much messed up the surface of my ceiling throughout my kitchen and eating area. When I use the downdraft fan, the gas flame gets diverted and then you don't get enough heat on the burners. If I don't use it, I get all kinds of "stuff" that goes up into the air (not really noticeable at the time) and it has coated my ceiling. When I went to paint, it was a nightmare and I had to call a professional. On top of it all, I am looking to replace my gas downdraft cooktop and the selection is very small. I would advice against this type of cooktop.

At first I thought it was "just me" who felt this way and then, one day when I visiting my favorite cooking board, the topic came up and apparently all of us who have these feel the same way.

I think the painted cabinet look is a good idea. :thumbsup2 If you see a lot of home decorator magazines or shows, they do that too.:)
It certainly can break up the monopoly of a bigger kitchen too.;) Not that mine has that problem! lol

Christine...we would do a hood above the cooktop...I guess that is the updraft hood...because DH was aware of the problem you are talking about. But thanks...I never knew that.

Am I There Yet...would you mind posting pictures of your kitchen?? I remember seeing them and thinking it was really nice, but I wasn't "in the market" for a kitchen then, so I didn't pay really close attention.

Luv N Travel...my kitchen is big for the style house I have...a 2000 square foot Cape...but by today's standards in all these ginormous homes, it would probably be considered average.

Those of you who have islands...do you like them? Do you get sick of walking around them all the time????

An option to consider might be getting a range that has a double oven like one of these:

My SIL has this one and LOVES it. With going with something like this you save yourself the hassle of matching the cabinets. Also, Personally, I don't like having a cook top in an island especially if you have kids, it is WAY too easy to get burned and they take up a lot of good space in an island. If you want to go with a cook top/built in double oven set up, put the cook top along a wall not in the island.

Ohhhh... okay. If you insist. :teeth:

These are the new cabinets. We originally had a desk and a wall oven in that space, and a cooktop on the island. I had NO counterspace at all.

So, we got a slide-in range and an overhead microwave and now I have my whole island, plus space beside the range. I also had the carpenter put in pots-n-pans drawers.

These are the original cabinets.

For some reason, the cabinets photograph white, when in fact, they're a cream color. I suppose it could be the crappy photographer, a.k.a. me.
