We have had hardwood (red oak) in our kitchen for 15 years. We just had it refinished last fall. It looks brand new. It's had it's share of kids, pets and dishwasher leaks. We've never had a problem other than it lost it's luster after years of wear - which comes right back with refinishing. I like the warmth of it. If I were to build another home, I'd choose it again (or perhaps ceramic tile, depending on the style house and how the other rooms were configured). I wouldn't choose vinyl or laminate.
