Kirkland flea & tick vs frontline?

Hey,
I recently switched to this product from frontline plus. I can say that it did not work for my dog. However, there was an extenuating circumstance. My roommate stopped giving her dog flea medicine unannounced to me so my dog was probably at a much higher risk rate for flea infestations. Anyhow, she got a flea infestation and I switched her back to the front line and the fleas are gone now (less than 24 hours later). This is my second month on the costco brand. Something to consider for people thinking of switching...The costco brand does not kill eggs or larvae (it may claim to but research and reviews show that the active ingredients are highly effective in killing adult fleas but not as high at killing eggs and larvae). Frontline plus does kill the eggs and larvae. If you live in a lower risk area, the costco brand might be a good preventative product. But the important thing is that once your dog has fleas on it, SWITCH back to frontline or advantix or some other brand with an excellent reputation. Fleas are not going to kill your dog and with the money you save with this product it may be worth a shot for some people, but just keep in mind that you may have to buy the 'good stuff' anyways. Overall, I would not recommend to a friend because the trouble and time I wasted learning all this information that I have posted here was not worth my while to save 50 bucks on flea medicine. My loss is your gain.

Has anyone ever used the Kirkland brand on their dogs or heard anything bad? Kirkland brand is $19.99 front line is $69.99 big difference.

I did try the kirkland brand and it definitly did not work...very disappointed. I would advise not to waste your money on this brand.

This stuff is expensive, so thanks for everyone's help!!

I thought I would add one more site to check out for those that want Revolution or Heartguard (I buy the generic version, much cheaper). It is http://www.joespetmeds.com/

I believe they are based in Australia, thus the no prescription required. We need that because we have always been current on our heart worm meds, but our dogs do not go to the vet regularly. To get a vet's prescription for our 3 dogs and 4 cats and 2 feral kitties would be at least $500/year!

The revolution works fine, but it does not prevent ticks. We have had ticks on the cats, but not engaged. However, that means the cats and their ticks come inside and the ticks find people. :sad2:

Any suggestions for cats and ticks? I don't think collars will work.

The all natural powder I recommended in a previous post is for cats too!

"The powder I used is called Herbal Internal Powder and is made by Earth Animal. The lable says it is for dogs and cats and is also good for fleas."

Thanks! I will look into that.

I used it on my dog for last 2 months. About a week ago noticed a couple fleas on her. Now, she has lots of them. So it does not work on her. I will take to groomer tomorrow to get flea dip. Then use Capstar tabs a couple of weeks until the Kirklands wears off some then will try Vectra 3D that my vet recommends.

I'll take the package with 4 left in it back to Costco for a refund.

I love the way Costco stands behind what they sell!

I have used Kirkland Brand Flea and Tick twice now, 4 weeks apart. After the first application, I found ticks, and after the second apllication, fleas, one week after the app. I never had a problem with Frontline, and will take the Kirkland Brand back to Costco tomorrow.

Just asked my wise older vet if generic frontline was as good as the brand product and he said the difference is in the inactive ingredient which affects absorption of the medicine. He stated the generic has now been used in Europe for a few years and that the studies show less effectiveness. He recommended sticking with Frontline and buying it at Costco, as fleas and ticks are so thick in our area. He used to advise that we could stop application in the winter, but stop suggesting that with the mild winter we had.

My personal experience is we have several cedar trees on our property and our rescue dog had a bad case of fleas on arrival that we treated aggressively with comfortis, frontline and Dawn as recommended. It was when she started scratching at one of the cedars and getting a fine dusting of cedar bark on her coat that they completely disappeared! She was trying to catch some critter up/in the tree. So for the long term, start planting cedar trees! :)

I also made the mistake of using Kirkland flea treatment for my cat.

She became ill and her behavior was affected (she is feral at heart so it doesn't take much). Oh, and it didn't help her fleas.

I brought it back with just one missing, full refund. Thank you Costco, but you need to stop selling this garbage.

Don't get the Kirkland brand. I tried it and it makes a big greasy mess on your dog's coat. I went back to using Frontline.

I used this on my mastiff and we live in an area w LOTS of ticks. I've never seen one on him, nor have I seen fleas. HOWEVER, my vet is amazing and noticed some elevated levels on a blood screen of Gronk's, tested him and it turns out he has lymes. I will also add he is a year old so I know it happened recently :(
And he never leaves the couch!

I purchased and used Kirkland’s Flea & Tick Preventative all spring and summer on my cat and dog. Initially I noticed that there was much more liquid in the bottle than other products we had used. It also seemed to stay visible at the application site for 4-5 days instead of 1-2.
I didn't notice any behavioral or physical changes in my dog but my previously very healthy and energetic 17 year old cat started acting strangely. After the application she seemed lethargic. Over time she started urinating outside of her litter box. She ate less and started vomiting and having loose stools. These changes occurred gradually over time but she definitely seemed to "take a dip" after I applied Kirkland's preventative. She often rebounded after awhile and I didn't initially correlate these changes with the preventative application. I blamed it on her age and hyperthyroidism and our vet concurred. I mentioned the dips to her but she hadn't heard anything about the problems with this product. Her blood work started to show weakening kidney function which was also blamed on the hyperthyroidism despite the fact that her thyroid levels were managed with oral medication. After the last application she declined very acutely and I again took her to the vet. She gave her fluids, antibiotics and an antiemetic to encourage her to eat. She even found fleas and flea dirt at the base of her tail so the product is ineffective as well as dangerous. I decided to research online to see if any other cats had experienced problems and found the many, many complaints of similar reactions to this product on this site, Amazon and YouTube.
I'm very sad to say that my cat passed away last weekend. I cannot prove that Kirkland's product was the cause of her death but I am convinced that it was at least a catalyst. I am heartbroken and disgusted and outraged with Costco's handling of this issue. To my knowledge, they have neither stopped marketing this product nor informed veterinarians or the public.
