Kindle with Special Offers?

Did anyone get one of the ad-supported Kindles? Are the ads annoying?

I want to buy a Kindle (I think - not sure if I will like the whole not-a-real-book-in-my-hands-thing...), and am tempted by the price. (Plus I just traded in one OLD college textbook for a buy-back price of $72!!!)

Just wondering if anyone has actually tried one....

Do a search for Kindle on this board, there was a thread last week where a poster bought the special Kindle with the ads and commented on it.

I don't have a Kindle, but another e-reader and I love it. I thought I'd miss having books, but I really don't. If you love to read, I don't think you'd be disappointed in (any) e-reader.

I have a kindle, but not the one with ads, but I wanted to comment on if you will like it....I too was concerned about not reading "a book" and I dont miss books AT ALL!!!!! If anything when I do read a book I MISS my kindle, its so easy to read, I can do it one handed if needed, I dont have to lug around a HUGE book with me (I read "The Help" in book form and MAN it was a pain in the you what, to carry it around) See if any of your friends have one that maybe you can borrow, although all the kindle users I know are pretty protectice of their kindle

I had gone to Target and B&N to play with both and HAVE NOT regretted my decision!!!!!

I too thought I would miss the "real book". NOT! I now get annoyed when I want to read a book that we already have on the shelves. I'm too cheap to just buy a kindle copy but I really dislike the paper books. They are so annoying. Confession...I have actually purchased some books on Kindle that we have on the shelf just so I can read it on Kindle versus a bulky paper book.

Get a Kindle and LOVE it.

I love my kindle 3, but I don't consider the price difference to be worth the ads. As far as we know, there is no way to purchase out of the ads ever. If it was below $100, it might be worth it, but I really think its worth paying the extra $30 for the adfree version.

I too held off buying a Kindle or any ereader b/c I was a book lover but absolutely love it! I don't think the $30 price difference is worth the ads version. Maybe if the difference was $50 or more, but hopefully this is something you will use for a long time.

I thought it might be annoying, and I even purchased a 3G+WIFI for my mom for mother's day... but my neighbor bought an ad-supported Kindle at Target yesterday and it's MORE than worth it!

Several items to point out: The ads replace the screen savers. So, basically, when you're not reading the ad will be there. Big woop. When you are on the home page and looking through titles to read, there is a small bar at the bottom. At no time when you are reading your book does an ad appear. Brilliant. Add to all that... the ads are for things you'll use, like 50% Amazon gift cards, 50% off the lighted cover, $10 for buying a book under $10, 50% off a Roku (I would buy it JUST for this!)

Let's not forget the fact that the Kindle has the sharpest contrast, the fastest page turns, real page numbers, the longest battery life and the lightest weight of any full function e-reader in its class. If you don't need 3G, this is the best deal in town. Oh, and the Kindle will be able to utilize library lending later this year.

I haven't bought one and I probably won't, but so far most of the reactions I've seen to it on various message boards have been quite favorable.

If you look at the Amazon website you can see the screenshots of some of the current ads. As some have noted, they are in fact much prettier than Agatha Christie.

Thanks everybody! I think I'll just go with the ad-supported one. (As soon as I get my gift card from trading in that text book! Little nervous about that actually going through since I have now read some reviews where people were told the book they shipped was damaged, were not given their gift card, and their book was NOT returned to them either!! I hope I did the right thing...)

Really looking forward to trying the Kindle!!!

Do you know if this something that can be added onto an existing Kindle or will it only be available on a new version of the Kindle, like Kindle 4 (are they at 3 now?)? I have a Sony and am expecting to upgrade soon, I was going to go with a nook because of the library feature but if the Kindle will support it, I think I'd go with that instead.

All Kindles will have access to library lending. It will not be dependent upon which version you have.
