my first generation Nook died. I share an acct with my son, daughter and mother. There is a special on the glow one for $99. I love my Nook except for one thing- I find getting books from the library difficult so I don't use it much for that task. I am a huge library person. So I get all my books hard copy from the library and only use the Nook when I really want something and I load it up for vacations. The glow version of the Kindle is $129 and is supposedly better at getting library books. The con is I won't be sharing an account with my family anymore. What would you do? Any advice from someone's who has either device for library books would be very helpful. The Nook people said if I get their tablet, it works great for library books. But then you have to buy a special screen thing to read outside, it's more money. i don't need a tablet.

does anyone have a tablet and read outside? I really want tty easy library functionality and the tablet is only thirty dollars more but I love that I can read my current Nook so easy outside.

I haven't checked lately(in the last year or so) but in my area, you couldn't use a kindle to borrow books at the library. A Nook would work but Kindle would not -- something about the Kindle having a proprietary system.

Since you already have content in the Nook 'ecosystem' and you share an account with others who will presumably continue using it, I'd generally say get another Nook. But, regarding the library - in my experience, it depends on what e-book lending system your library uses. I'd ask the librarian at your library what they think and if they can help you with the process.

Personally, I have a Kindle Paperwhite and love it, but the main reasons I bought it over the Nook GlowLight was because I already owned lots of Kindle content that I'd been reading on my tablet and phone, and because I subscribe to Amazon Prime anyway. I have no problem getting library books, but my library system also supports Nook and Sony e-readers, and I think some lesser-known brands too.

Tablets are pretty much all going to have glare outside, because none of them use the e-ink screens that the dedicated e-reader devices do. (Some are being developed, but last I heard, they were expensive and didn't work that well.) The screen films can help eliminate some of the glare, but I think they're ugly and don't work that well anyway, although your mileage may vary on that.

my library supports Nook and Kindle. Maybe I could get the tablet for library books. but when I know I'll be on vacation and reading outside, I'lll use my mom's for non-library books. She hardly uses hers

the Kindle paperwhite with glow is $129 and is good with library books. But for $10 more I can get the Nook tablet, stay in my family circle of books that we share and still get the library functionality. Seems like a good deal.

do people really use the tablets for more than reading?

my dad just said Barnes and Noble will be going out of business soon, ugh. just when I had made up my mind

I have heard for along time that B&N was going out of business but it hasn't happened yet. Not sure if it is truth or rumor.

I wouldn't worry too much about that, someone brings B&N going out of business up every year. I saw a list that said they are closing some 200+ stores through 2023. That still gives you 9 years :)

I have a Kindle and a nook tablet. I love my Kindle so when I got my nook tablet I didn't think I'd use it for reading, I was wrong. I got it so that I could leave my laptop home when I travel but still have internet and to dump my pics since it takes a microSD card. I actually got it specifically for our last WDW trip.
I downloaded the Kindle app so even though I'm on a nook I get all my books via Amazon including my library rentals.
I do admit that I do not like it for outside reading though.

Barnes & Noble and Samsung just recently announced a Nook-branded Galaxy tablet, so I don't think they intend to drop support for the Nook content system even if the physical stores do go out of business entirely. (Which is a rumor as far as I know, but one I'm inclined to believe will occur eventually.)

Most of my experience with tablets has been with iPads and an older model Galaxy, so I can't speak to what most people use the current Nook tablets for. A friend of mine does use hers for web surfing and chatting on IRC, so that's somebody, lol. :) I personally bought a dedicated reader because I got sick of the screen glare from reading on tablets.

maybe I'll borrow my mom's old Nook for reading outside for the trip and get the tablet for the library functionality. I hate to give up on Nook, it's intuitive and I don't want a learning curse with a nee device. It's nice to be able to all share nook books. It sure would be nice to bring a table and not my laptop to Disney

I own a Nook Color and the NOOK HD+. I love the Nook HD. I have the kindle app on the Nook. I just started downloading books from our library to my Nook. So far all the books I have downloaded have been in Kindle form. There is an App that you need to download books from your library ( you can even choose more than one library to loan from). It is called Overdrive (i Think). I have this feature. I have been reading like crazy. I can loan up to 4 books at a time so I download all 4 books at once so I am never bookless. Though with all the free wifi spots it is easy to log in and download a book if you need to. No more dragging a tote of books along on vacation.

I do read with my Nook outside too. I may need adjust the screen brightness but otherwise have no problem reading on it.

I share my Nook with 2 of my DC. They have it set up where everyone has seperate contents which is nice.

I have no experience with a Kindle other than using the kindle app on my nook.

I just called the library and they said iPads can be used to check out e-books. Horray! I;m getting the $199 Target iPad mini. Then the tech librarian will show me through it. Best of both worlds.

so much for that, iPad minis sold out of target and online and they don't think they are getting more in.

If you are looking for something you are going to use to actually read get the Kindle Paperwhite 3g. Best reader out there! If you want a device to watch movies just get an ipad!

my whole family shares our Nook acct so I really don't want to switch to Kindle. I want to switch to the Nook tablet because it's really easy to get library books. the one I have now makes it impossible

Lovelovelovelovelovelovelove our Kindle Fire. Great for library books because I can continue the same book on my android phone, laptop or on the Kindle. Also great for learning games for my 9 year old, Angry Birds for hubby plus a fully functioning web browser. Did I mention how much I love it?

I had a first generation Nook, and just upgraded to the glow light one when mine died this winter.

I love it for reading outdoors. There is no glare on the screen whatsoever. The new one is different than the other ones. It is not quite as intuitive, but i do like the new glow light for reading at night, etc...

I do not like the case options out there for it. B & N and the aftermarkets did not do many for the smaller size of these.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Love my Kindle paperwhite. All I use it for is reading, but I have an Ipad that I use for other...tablet stuff.

I know Target was sold out of the ipad mini, but it is NOT good for reading outside. It has the glare problem that anything without "e-ink" is going to have.

I didn't know anyone was buying Nooks anymore:rotfl2: sorry, no flames please....:lmao: Seriously they are so backward in comparison to....well every other tab;et option out there.... I had a Nook color for a couple of years and was completely unimpressed. Overpriced ebooks? no thanks.Slow processor? no thanks. I preffered a simple b&w kindle for reading, and since Kindle offers literally hundreds of free books daily in all genres...that was what I used....then I got the ipad min, installed the kindle app(for the free books) and haven't looked back since. (It's amazing) I love the downloaded pdf,etc book collection I now have, plus the capability for so much more than the...Nook. If it's kindle vs. nook, I'd advise Kindle. If it's anything goes, I advise the Ipad Mini (love it) FWIW, I use a 'matte' type screen shield, and turn up the brightness,to read outdoors with no issues on ipad.
I still like the basic kindle though, and the fire seems pretty nice.

oh, in addition to the anti glare screen shield (6.00 on amazon) I set the paper tone to sepia for reading on the ipad.... The truth is, I have all this stuff, and I still love good old fashioned paper books the best!
