Help

I would love to buy a Kindle before out trip at the end of Sept, but I'm worried about getting in on time since it's sold out. So I'm looking at a Nook and I wonder if it's the same or better than a Kindle.

Does anyone have any experiences with the Nook or Kindle, and is it worth it to take my chances and order the Kindle or just get the Nook?

I bought my Kindle in January of this year and LOVE it. I looked at the Nook and just didn't like it as well. I bought the more expensive Kindle (I wanted a larger screen). There really isn't anything I dislike about it, and love the convenience.

However, having said that, since the iPad came out, I MAY have thought about purchasing that as it does the same things as my Kindle plus the benefits of a laptop. But if you are just looking at the Nook and Kindle, I would go with the Kindle. My sis just bought hers (she got the $189 model) and loves hers too. It is so convenient.

You can't read Overdrive Library books on the Apple products yet, even through an App like from Barnes and Noble. I think people get confused sometimes and they think that it is Barnes and Noble who is providing the library books - they aren't. They simply have a reading device which can handle the format and DRM combination - same as Sony, Astak and many other devices.

Overdrive is an actual company which distributes eBooks to many retail stores as well as many Public Libraries.

You can't read Overdrive books on the Apple Products yet (iTouch, iPAD, iPhone) etc although they reportedly are developing an APP which will make it possible. If you go to the Overdrive website they have a PR release about it.

would those who have Nooks, say that they would be good for reading textbooks? Several of my textbooks are being offered for Nook this semester and they are $100 less than the cost of the physical textbook. And I have to buy them new this year since they are new mandatory editions (so it's buy new or buy them on nook ). Since the Nook costs less than $200, I would still save money and I guess I could save money going forward too as B&N adds more textbooks but I'm not sure if the function of the textbooks would be really compatible with an e-reader?

Amazon offers textbooks. I have no idea whether they are the same textbooks but they do offer them. Personally, if I were reading textbook materials I would prefer the larger screen of the DX or an iPad. Textbooks can have data in the body and pictures and marginalia. Really hard to capture on a 6 inch screen... though it really depends on how you process data.

I hope all textbooks are offered electronically by the time my 16 yr old is in college.

I think it would depend on what kind of textbook it was. If it's a textbook without a lot of diagrams/tables/pictures, and it's not in PDF format (PDFs range anywhere from looking OK to looking terrible on a 6 inch screen), then yes, I would LOVE to have my textbooks on my Nook. So, for something like a history text, sure. If it's a math, science, or art history text book, probably not. I just don't see how they'd work on such a small screen.

I guess it would depend how often you're close to accessible wi-fi. My Kindle only has 3G, so I have never really explored (other than home or work locations) where the other wi-fi hotspots are. I really like never having to worry if I am near wi-fi or not. I don't use the web browser on the Kindle, but I DO have documents emailed to it so that requires a connection. If you plan to load books on it mainly from your PC it doesn't matter which you choose.

Yes. I was thinking about just waiting until the price of the iPad comes down a little. As I am getting ready to pack for a vacation, I have the iTouch for my audio books, a Zune that I have movies on, then if I get a Kindle/Nook, plus my laptop for computer things! wow! That's a lot of electronics to tote around! Maybe the iPad would be better for me?

(I do have the Kindle app on my iTouch. But I find the screen way too small to comfortably read a book. I also have the Kindle app on my computer.)

I just got my skin in the mail last night and I love it!!!!!!!!! It was hard to pick which one I wanted for my Kindle. You can check on retailmenot for codes, mine was $15.23 shipped.

I didn't realize until I pulled it out of my case how dirty mine was getting, I seem to rest my thumb on the same spot all the time. So hopefully my new skin will help keep it clean and it just looks cooler, more mine. Now I need to pick one out for my netbook...
