This is what I'm basing it on. If it's wrong, someone needs to tell Jodi.

No that did happen, but it was settled months ago and is kind of fuzzy in its facts. Jodi states a disagreement with "Amazon" in that it was Amazon that was pushing heavy discounting on eBooks and the other retailers were mostly having to play along in order to remain competitive with Amazon. Barnes and Noble has never been in favor of discounting eBook pricing because they really can't afford to subsidize (sell at a loss) the way Amazon can. They are in a financially precarious position as it is.

House Rules was originally withheld from Amazon and all other eBook formats, a process known as Windowing) - then S&S caved and they were supposed to release it in eBook to everybody at the same time. Jodi Picoult did play a part in getting them to do that. She's a powerful enough author that S&S didn't want to make her too angry. If I recall correctly they did get it out in ePub about a month before they released to Amazon - but they weren't supposed to do that.

But as I said, that is all settled now. The contracts of the Agency 5 dictate uniform availability and pricing to all the retailers.

By the way, Ms. Picoult posted on the Amazon forums regarding the matter and she (or at least an assistant) answered an email of mine and I'll say she really does appear to be one classy lady.

Darn! You responded before I changed my post.

To be honest, I probably shouldn't have posted a thing about any of this, because I own a Nook, lol. I obviously am not paying attention.

I love my kindle

My library doesn't support ebooks yet so I had to go by user interface when deciding between the two. When it comes to ease of use the kindle wins hands down IMO.

This is an interesting video. It is rather long but it did reinforce my decision to get a Kindle over the Nook.

I have the Kindle2 so I didn't get an option on WiFi or 3G but if I were buying a Kindle3 I would probably just get the WiFi version and spend the extra $50 on books. I have WiFi access almost everywhere I go anymore, so the 3G wouldn't be as important for me. If you do not have good WiFi access, you should probably get the WiFi + 3G model (same thing with the Nook if you decide to go that route).

Hey nook users maybe we should start a lend me thread where we list our books and can lend them to each other as that feature is available to save people money?

Good idea!!!

After spending the morning dusting bookshelves, I am getting a Nook (asking for one for Christmas). :lmao: I am reading a book on my Droid X to see how I like reading electronically and while it isn't as easy to read on the X as it would be on a Nook or Kindle I already discovered a HUGE benefit-I can read with the lights off :thumbsup2. My Droid has a setting where the background is black and the lettering is white and it doesn't light up the room so DH can sleep-he falls asleep about 10 seconds after his head hits the pillow-I take about an hour to fall asleep reading.

The nook doesnt have a back light. But the book light that came with mine (my store had a promo) lets off little light ...im a very light sleeper and didnt notice it during my WDW trip when DFi used it!

Seriously though the nook is awesome. Oh for the record I have the 3g one

I'm so glad I found this thread. My wife was talking to me about getting me an e-reader for Christmas.

My DH bought my dd and I Nooks 2 weekends ago. I'm loving it!

I totally agree with everything Sparx said in her post on page 1.

Right now I'm reading a library book from my public library. I do love the option to do this and to also share books.

While an e-reader will never replace a book with real pages, it sure is a nice option--esp. when traveling and wanting to take a bunch of books!

I think a sharing thread would be cool although I'm such a slow reader that it'd be a mracle for me to actually finish in 14 days! lol

Do you think the Kindle will be capable of allowing users to download e-books from the library in the future?

In their defense, when I was reading up on it I thought they had a lot of free books to choose from which would probably make it about the same...maybe?:confused3

I chose the nook over the kindle and I don't regret my choice at all! I do think they are both great e readers. I would research the kinds of books that you like to read and see which one offers the most availability.

Of course I'm like the IPAD would be the best..............only because I can then buy books from any bookstore lol

I'm getting dd the nook for Christmas. The fact that she can borrow from the library was the deciding factor over getting her a Kindle.

That was one of my deciding factors too.

Also one of mine!:)

I'm reading a library book right now and loving the feature!:lovestruc

Sorry for the length...just wanted to put my 2 cents in!

I agree that both are great readers and you probably can't go wrong. For the Nook, I've heard that a new version will come out in the next few months. So you might want to hold off for that if the Nook is what you are leaning towards. Amazon just launched their latest models in August.

The library book feature on the Nook is great, but for me, my library didn't have a huge amount of titles that are of interest to me and the amount of free books I've gotten from Amazon is far more than the number of library books I would have borrowed. I believe that the Nook also has free titles, but I'm not sure about the amount.

The Nook lending feature is also great, but is only available if the publisher allows and even then, you can only do it once and for a limited time. I didn't know anyone with a Nook, so for me, that feature didn't sway me. At this point, I have 3 Kindles on my Amazon account (Mom, DH and I) along with 1 iPod Touch (my cousin). We share ALL of the books on the account with no time limits or constraints. We can all read the same book at the same time if we want and only pay for the title once. IF you think you might have multiple e-readers in the future, this might be something to consider.

The in-store experience with B&N is supposed to be fantastic with free giveaways, etc. I've had no issues with Kindle customer service (when I had a problem we couldn't fix over the phone, they overnighted me a brand new Kindle immediately). Still, the in-store coffee and other offers at B&N sounds fun!

One thing I would want to mention about B&N is that financially, the firm is in a LOT of trouble. They have already announced the closing of many stores and senior management seems to be on their way out. For a ~$200 investment, probably not the biggest deal, but I would have some questions about how they will support the product in the future as their priority has to be getting their capital structure in line and making a viable profit. Also, a possibility with any 3G reader is that they eventually charge for 3G usage. For a company looking for $ (Amazon, B&N, etc), this is an easy change to make. I don't see it happening soon, but the companies have made no guarantees that it will never happen.

cc1013, thank you so much for your response. We are buying an ereader for my FIL for his 75th birthday this weekend and was having a terrible time trying to decide kindle v. nook.

I think your arguments have swayed my H and I towards the kindle. His brother has the Kindle and has tons and tons of books on it. My FIL can borrow his books and vice versa.

Very good advice about B&N's financial trouble, I didn't think about that. I bought a nook yesterday and my H thinks we should return it for the Kindle.

Glad to hear the information was helpful! :thumbsup2

Just to let you know, in order to 'share' books, the Kindles need to be registered to the same Amazon account. For each book purchased, there are a certain number of licenses that the publisher allows. Each device you download to, uses a license while it is on that device. A book can be deleted from a device and then loaded onto another and it only counts as 1 license. Typically, publishers allow six licenses for each title, but I have seen rare occasions when it is 4 or 5. Overall, you probably won't want to register 12 devices to one account, but having a few is definitely doable.

My DH, mom, cousin and I all link our devices to my Amazon account. If someone purchases and item off of their Kindle, I immediately receive and e-mail about it. The Kindles do not show credit card information, so nobody has that info from my account. It has all worked out very nicely and has been economical for us.

Finally, I believe that Best Buy has the Kindle and Nook for sale. You could always go and see them next to one another to get a better feel for the actual product. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions! :goodvibes

I have both and find I like my 2nd generation Kindle better for many of the reasons stated above. I also find the Kindle to have a MUCH longer battery life and most of the time it at least feels easier to navigate (the touchscreen can be a bit of a pain on the Nook for me). The Kindle starts faster and the pages do 'turn' faster. One feature I like on the Nook is the ability to change the font on the Nook, not just the size of the font.

Whatever you buy, I recommend a cover!

with Kindle vs Nook we chose nook. We live near a barnes and noble and I take advantage of the freebie chocolates, drinks etc they offer on the shopping page alot.
I also like how you can borrow library books on the nook.
But the thing we liked was while sitting in barnes and noble you can read any book for free:)

The 3G vs Wifi that is to how you plan whether to get it. 3G is good if you want a book spur of the moment. If you can buy books ahead and anticipate then just wifi is ok

Does that mean only the Nook has the capability of borrowing library books and the Kindle doesn't?

That is correct Sandy. Kindle cannot borrow library books. You can only buy books for the Kindle.

I just received my 3rd generation Kindle today. I really wanted the new one but couldn't come up with a good reason since my 2nd generation one was working perfectly. A couple days ago something (don't know what) managed to break the 5-way button into two pieces. Neither piece has drifted and remain next to each other, although one is loose while the other is still fastened to whatever is underneath. Any suggestions on glue that would have to be applied on the end of a pin and the two pieces propped together by another pin?

Anyway, I really like the generation 3 reader. It's smaller than the other (although the screen is the same size), available leather cover is nicer, and a slightly more expensive cover comes with a small light built in. The screen resolution is better and the button arrangement is slightly different. (It doesn't look like that selection button would break on this one.) Transferred the Boston Globe subscription, books from the old machine, and the archived list. I took the $189 model so there are many options to connect and download.

So far, so good!
