Kindle or Nook

ME TOO!!! Love my Sony e-Reader. Yeah, you have to sync with computer and can not buy a book on the 'fly', but I always think ahead and download books that I am interested in reading so I always have a few there when I need them. I have mine for almost 3 years and have had no issues. I would love to get the newer larger screen version, but until this one dies-or I get a job-I am fine with it. Love it!!!

Sony has a new one scheduled to come in December called the Reader Daily Edition. It will have wireless on it so you can download books through their bookstore without going to your computer. Their website isn't listing a price yet, though, so I'm not sure what that one will cost.

I was planning to hold off on shopping for one until that one comes out so I can compare that to the Nook. I don't know anyone with a Kindle and like some of the other posters am a bit nervous about buying one without being able to try it out in a store first. I've already hinted to my husband that I want a digital book reader for Christmas ;)

I'm like the OP and wonder if I'd like one since I so enjoy the tactile part of reading..the paper, the pages, etc. How do you all feel about this? Do you miss the book part of the 'book'?

I thought I would, but I don't. I get just as lost in the electronic version of the book as I did in the real version. My hands used to hurt a lot because I read so much; I do not miss carting around big books and having to hold them open. I also do not miss pages falling out or ink on my fingers, it seems that over the last few years, the quality of the books went down. I frequently read my kindle with just one hand and I'm so used to clicking pages that the few times I pick up a real book I've noticed myself clicking to turn the pages rather than reaching up. :rolleyes1

I still do buy real books, I have the new Stephen King and the new Robert Jordan books on order, but only because I'm a completionist and I have all of their other books already. Once I have the money to replace all of the books by those authors, I'll probably replace them with Kindle versions all at once. I bought the new Margaret Atwood book between classes the other day. I was wanting to read it, and we got out early so I had an unexpected hour free. It was so nice to just buy the book and a minute later start reading it. The sheer convienence of this device is amazing, and even though the price has come down a bit since we purchased ours in February, I don't have one iota of buyer's remorse (and that's rare for me). :goodvibes

My biggest dilemma besides that, is that I work part time at an entertainment store (Hastings) and we get a free paperback a week...I've been there 9 years and you can imagine my book supply. So, I feel guilty actually buying books when I have tons waiting to be read. :)

I have not heard of Hastings in years. I am from Roswell so I guess it is a NM thing. :)

I looked at the Nook yesterday...I have a Kindle and LOVE IT!. I asked the girl about odering books on the Nook. She said the color bar at the bottom has different books, so I asked" what if a book I want is not at the bottom, my Kindle has a keybord on it so I can search" She told me that I would have to go on Barnes and Noble.com on my computer to find it. That to me is a dealbreaker. I LOVE the fact that I really never have to use my computer for anything with my Kindle. :surfweb:

I am also in the Kindle vs Nook debate. Although I have not seen the Nook, I have been trying to find out if that color bar goes away when you are reading. I think it would be distracting. 2 B&N associates told me they do not know. Seems to me if they want Christmas traffic- they want to get them out pronto.
This is weird but I cannot read used or library books. It just creeps me out. I think about everyone's dirty hands on the books and I just cannot read them. That is one of the major reasons I want an electronic reader.

Just thought I would inform you that if you have a nook and enjoy a "book", you can loan it out. Of course the other person has to have a computer, iphone, or some other media that allows them to view the book. The cool part is you "WILL" get your book back. :)

You can loan your book out for say 2 weeks. Well, when that two week time period is up, it is automatically sent back to you, weather their done reading it are not.

I also know that B & N will have the nook in stores the end of November, so just a few more weeks.

I work at B & N, but only on Sat/Sun evenings (and I have had the past 2weeks off) so I'm not completely knowledgable on the nook. But if you have any specific questions I can take a list in on Saturday and get the answers from the store manager. If she does not know the answer we can email specific questions in and get answers for them.

I've had a Kindle for about a year now and thought the nook looked interesting.

The LendMe feature is kind of blah. You can lend a book one time for 14 days to one person. Once a book has been lent out, it can never be lent out again. That seems really restrictive to me for what they are touting as a key feature.

The big thing to me is prices though. I looked up the prices of the eBooks I've bought on Barnes and Noble and they were almost all way more expensive than Amazon prices.

Ewww! I never thought of that! Not sure if I can feel the same now about reading used/library books! And think of how many people read when they're sick...yuck! (Even though I know the germs/viruses will be dead...still...)

I've been looking at e-readers for a while, and while I don't think the price poiint is low enough for a limited use gadget I'm seriously leaning towards getting a Nook but I'll wait until it's been around for a few months.

First, Kindle doesn't allow ePub format (last I heard) and I believe that ePub will win the format wars.
Second, I've been following closely what Amazon does with the Kindle and I don't like it (for example, deleting books you bought off your Kindle).
Third, I like the Nook because you can borrow books, get them for Google books or a library (just like the Sony Reader by the way).
Fourth, I can read as much as I want in B&N stores.
Fifth, the Nook gives you much more for your money (PDF support, a SECOND SCREEN, SD slot, both 3G and WiFi etc.)
Sixth, all the B&N articles/videos I've seen have the phrase "when we do" - that's HUGE! Since Nook is running Android (open source) the possibilities are almost endless.
Seventh - 500,000 free titles - 'nuff said.
Eighth: Expandable memory

The only disadvantages I can see in the Nook are not that important (text to speech, a bit heavier, no international access) except one which is no web browsing. Too bad, that's a biggie.

I believe all three have mobile applications as well.

BIG disadvanage of all e-reades is the price

The Nook is already being called the "Kindle Killer".

Sorry, false info was given to you. All you need is 3G coverage or a wi-fi connection. It is touch panel like an iPhone instead of a keyboard.

Oh, and BTW the color panel can be turned off for reading.

Also, you can get B&N's eReader application for iPhone, Blackberry, PC or Mac for free and it has been available since summer. So, you could technically be reading the free books for free right now. And new titles are added every single day.

The official product launch day is November 30th. If your B&N doesn't have them for sale on that date it is because they are pre-ordering at such a high rate. All stores will have a demo around the 30th.

HTH!:goodvibes
