I really want to buy this for DD11, but DH wants one that doesn't show ads on it. I haven't seen a sale on any of the ad-free ones. Have you?

Are you set on getting her a Kindle? You might want to look into a Nook if you want ads free. Yes you can get ads free Kindles but they are charging more for them. Target has the Nook Touch for $99 this week with a $30 gift card, so it makes the Nook $69 if you want to think about it that way. Just something else to consider!

Not sure if you already know this, but the ads are ONLY on the screensaver, not when you're reading.

I've heard, and it's my understanding, that you can pay to "upgrade" and have the ads removed later. But I would ask a worker about that, that's just what I have been reading when doing my kindle research.

Just a note to let you know that they ads are only the screen savers for when you are NOT reading. You never see an add at all when you are reading. The regular models have screen savers of dead authors when you are not reading.

I have saved enough money with my ads that the adds have given me back the original cost of my K3. For example... Buy a book for $1... The book was a $12 book that I really wanted so that was 11 back to the original cost. 50% off lighted covers which I really really wanted that was $25 back towards the cost of my Kindle.

There is a fee you can now pay to remove the screen savers, but I don't know why anyone would want to IMO. Good luck!

It is through Wednesday. I got one for my mom this morning & there were plenty at our store.

I had Target price match this today so I could use my REDcard discounts. They did it without any problem. I am really happy to not have to go out on BF.

There is nothing r-rated or even pg-13 if that is a concern. And, the ads are only ads that more info is sent to your email account that is registered if you "click" on them. You can not buy something directly from the ad. The PP was correct the ad only shows up as screen saver when you turn off the device and on the bottom of the screen in your "table of contents". It does not interfer with the book you are reading at any time as a pop-up.

Thanks for posting this earlier! I went out and picked up 3 of them for gifts. I have been watching for a good sale on them. Also, I was able to find quite a few more great deals at Best Buy when I was there.

They have the Magic Treehouse series which my DD8 loves. You can go amazon.com and look under the Kindle section for Kindle books. I can't remember how to search for kid's books, but I know you can do it. There are a lot of them! They have "classics" (think Beatrix Potter) that you can get for free.

I've also been able to rent books from the library for my kids. You have to go to your local library's website to learn how to do that, but it is fairly simple.

Thanks so much for the help. I think I'm going to get this for her. Her mother doesn't think it's a good idea but once she knows what kind of books she can get I think she'll be okay with it. I like that she can get library books too.

Is this a "standing" offer? I plan on buying a Kindle for DD8 and she really wants the lighted cover (which is the one I have) but I just can't fork out another $50 for that cover right now. I know she will need a cover and that is ultimately the one I want to get her. Most of the non-lighted covers are still in the $25-$30 range anyways, but how likely is it that I will get this offer?

It seems like everyone receives this offer when they register their Kindle. Within a day of registering I received the offer. I took a general poll of the five pple I know that have bought or received one within the last month and all did get the offer.
