Kindle DX!

Diva, you can start downloading eBooks onto your computer. If you have a laptop, it's even better as you can read in bed, on the patio or on the couch. There are free software eBook application downloads for PCs.

I wrote about them on this thread: Free eBooks to download!

I recently found out the mobipocket reader format IS the Kindle format. There is a free download at mobipocket.com, just for desktop PCs. You can then buy the Stackhouse series from Amazon and start reading them.

Lots of the bigger libraries (& university libraries) now are part of the NetLibrary program where you can download ebooks for free for a few weeks before having to "return" the eBooks back to the library. Most libraries have the books in Adobe Digital PDF format with a free PDF Reader software and some have the mobipocket format.

It's not quite the same as a cute little Kindle or eReader and not as much portability. But for me, cheapie that I am, it's been worth it, to read the bigger fonts in bed, on my laptop screen. :surfweb: I realise how much I'm reading off my computer screen anyway, just surfing the web. Now, I can use that time for real reading instead. AND, it lets me hold out until the Kindle or a generic eReader comes down to a price I'm willing to pay. :cool1:

Oh cool, Imzadi!!! I'll check out your other thread. It might be a good thing to hold me over until I want to fork over the cash for a reader, too. I did just get a new car, so I might need to put it off a bit longer. LOL!

I want the K2 so bad!!!! My DH thinks I won't like it because I wont have the feel of a real book. I have so many books I'm not sure where to put them anymore besides I hate when you lend a book out to someone and they don't give it back, I get so tired of asking for them back so if I had the K2 they wouldn't ask to borrow any books~right?!

I thought it wouldn't feel like a real book too. However, I have repeatedly found myself licking my finger to turn the page while reading my Kindle....so I guess it feels like a real book to me!!!! :lmao:

I read in the Chicago Tribune this morning that the Kindle DX is more for newspaper/magazine reading and for textbooks. There are some textbook companies that have already said they will be making books available on the KDX. This is a great idea. I teach at a college and am always sickened by the cost of the books the students have to buy and lug around. Maybe textbooks will be a little cheaper on the KDX.
I have the K2 with a red MEdge cover that I am in love with! I think the K2 is the best invention ever!!

Speaking of the Chicago Tribune: one of the great features of Kindle (1, 2 or DX) is the ability to purchase some of the great newspapers of the country. I do not subscribe to any, but on any given day may decide to read the Tribune, or the New York Times, Washington Post, International Times Herald, The Times of London, even the Las Vegas paper (the Friday edition has all the shows, etc listed).

It is still a wonder to me that I can hit the 'buy' button for any single newspaper and, within 30 seconds, it will be on my Kindle ready for me to read.

Number One: Tell your husband to mind his own business!!! LOL - but seriously, are you not allowed to purchase it without his permission or something?

Number Two: There is a 30 day return policy - if you find that you really DON'T like it, just send it back.

But it should be YOUR decision, not your husband's. Just my humble opinion...

Me too. I have boxes of books under my bed (it sits up high), the in dining room and in the attic.

I'd love to have a Kindle. Unfortunately, my economic status can't afford it right now.

I saw the DX on Amazon yesterdsay afternoon when I went there looking for some books. Yeah. I just ordered 3 more books. :goodvibes

I've downloaded some books to my computer, but as I don't have a laptop, it's a pain. I don't like reading books on my desktop pc, so I have to waste paper and ink to print them out. I'm going to have to see in a couple months if I can get a used Kindle.

As others have said, the larger screen would be nice but the kindle 2 is such a convenient size. If I were reading textbooks or such the DX would be worthwhile but, for now, DH and I will stick with our smaller version 2 machines.

I want one, but will wait a bit. I'm asking for one for Christmas.

Love, love, love my Kindle 2 (appropriately dressed in it's starry night decal and Oberon Roof of Heaven purple cover), but have no interest in the new one. It's too big to fit in my purse, and I've read concerns that the screen is not a flex one, so would be easily damaged by being "thrown" in a backpack with textbooks, etc. By the time DS14 gets to college, I am sure I'll be able to buy him a Kindle 24, and never have to buy a text"book" again!

I love, love, love my Oberon cover. It's the Raven in Navy and every time I pick it up, it makes me happy.

I have the purple Roof of Heaven. I absolutely love the look of it and texture. I've also wanted to get the green Creekbed Maple cover.

Oh, the starry night with the purple Roof of Heaven sounds wonderful together.

It's better dressed than I am:laughing:

I forgot to mention its black and white floral Borsa Bella travel bag, with outside pocket for powercord and bendy light.

I have to stop spending all my money on it's looks so I can afford more books for inside of it:thumbsup2

Love my Kindle!!

I just tell my DH I'm supporting the economy. :thumbsup2 I've caught him eying some skins on decal girl and looking at the oberon website though, it's just a matter of time before he comes to the dark side. :woohoo:

I am an avid reader and saw someone with a Kindle 2 on vacation and now am so tempted to but it, but there are some very bad reviews on amazon. Does anyone have trouble reading out in the sun, or problems with the middle of the screen appearing faded? Was it a big transition from a book to the kindle. Would a kindle 1 be okay-are they much cheaper? I saw some 2s on ebay-if you buy a used one is there a problem registering it on amazon.

I am torn about spending the money and would appreciate any feedback or advice.
Thanks.

I bought a Kindle 2 back in March and love it. I have read on the beach and by the pool with no problems. It is usually in my purse or the side pocket of my SUV during the school year. I would be hesitant to buy one off of eBay because I have actually had mine go out and be replaced, I don't know how the warranty would transfer. Plus, they have come down to around $300 on amazon.com for a new one since the DX came out. At that price I wouldn't chance buying a used one. But that's just my opinion
