Kindle Cover Help

Oh my heavens!!! My eyes must be deceiving me! You need to modify your list my dear. Put Canterbury Tales (lol I can let you which of the tales are the trashiest...Chaucer was both raunchy and hysterical lmao) on top along with P&P. Better yet, maybe I need to resend my voicemail to the show about a DISunplugged book club. We sure have some work to do here.

I'm going to jump in here about books read:

Pride and Prejudice - Incredible book. Loved it and love the most recent movie with Kiera based on the book.
Paranoia - Liked it.

Pillars of the Earth is still one of the best books I have ever read. I read it about 2 years ago. I also loved the follow up book. My sister finally read Pillars and said it was the most boring book she had ever read and she refuses to read the second book.

I just finished reading a book called The Strain. It is by Chuck Hogan and Guillermo Del Toro. Not my usual read but it was good. I was sad at the end to remember that it's the first in a series of 3 books. Looking forward to book 2 coming out. It is about vampires but these are not the Cullens...no vegetarians in this group.

I also like Harlan Coben's stand alone books. I'm not a fan of his Myron Bolitar series. I really like Greg Iles too.

Kevin, I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed this week's podcast...especially the "What are you reading?" part.

That was my fb2fb question!!! :yay::woohoo::yay::woohoo::yay: It was very exciting to hear Pete read it. :thumbsup2

The guy that plays Edward creeps me out and looks like he smells bad.

He needs a bath and a day at the beach. Not necessarily in that order.

Not a vampire fan since Dark Shadows and I detested those Anne Rice vampires.

I'm pretty sure these books arent for me and there are so many that I want to read, that spending time reading something that doesnt interest me probably wont happen.

I didn't read the Twilight books for a long time because I am not a vampire fan - I am pretty much a historical romance book kinda girl. (Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book of all time. If truth be told, Jane Austen was essentially THE romance novelist of the 19th century but I won't go on about a historical lesson on Jane Austen. ;)) But once everyone started raving about the Twilight books I gave them a try and fell in love with the characters and the story - it's not really a story about vampires it is a story where some of the characters happen to be vampires.

In fact the Twilight books got me through the difficult Christmas holidays after my mom was told she had a relapse of her breast cancer in her bones. The books kept my mind off of things instead of dwelling on the possibilty that it could be my Mom's last holiday - which it won't be, she is doing great. :yay:

I have read the books about seven times and loved them each time - just like I love reading P&P each time. The movie is isn't really a fair adaptation of the books - I like to think of the movie as a supplement to the books. And there are lots of pictures of Robert Pattinson when he looks clean and fresh - remember the Oscars. :rolleyes1

Tonya, I totally agree. The Twilight movies could never do the books justice.

I would agree with you on this one. I read the books because my 13 year old was raving about them so I thought I would see what all the fuss was about. They were enjoyable but good lord, please don't make me see that movie again. I saw it twice and frankly that was two times too many. I really need to see Kristen Stewart in something else because based on this movie that girl cannot act her way out of a paper bag. I really did not like the way she portrayed the character. In the book there was so much more to Bella. She was so one dimensional in the movie. I would hope that is not how she was directed. I would like to see her in something else to see if she comes across so stiff and stilted in everything or if she did it special for this movie!

She's playing Joan Jett in The Runaways which I understand is filming now.

It's about the 70's all girl punk band.

I am a mouse click awayfrom ordering a Kindle. I do read a lot. When I sit back and start doing a mental total of what I spend on books, my heart skips a beat. Most are paperbacks that I either pass on to friend and family or donate. I do have some hardcovers that I end up keeping. Well, I have a lot of books.

I am really grateful for all the reviews and feedback on the Kindle. It's been very helpful on deciding if I want to spend the money on one. I was given a $100 gift card for Amazon on Friday as a thank you for a work project. Needless to say, this pretty much pushed me over the edge.

Kevin- Pride and Prejudice one of my absolute all time favorite books. I agree with Tonya, Austen was the romance writter of the 19th century. READ IT NOW!!!!! Then read Sense and Sensibility.

I really think you will enjoy the Kindle if you read so much. I activated mine in June 6 of this year and I am on my 13th or 14th book. It took a few days to get used to not having the feel of a book in my hands but now I'm totally in love with my Kindle.

I saw that a few weeks ago...I think I saw a picture of her dressed up as Joan Jett in a magazine and it mentioned that. I would like to see the movie about Joan Jett but my goodness hopefully this girl can pull it off! Like I said, maybe the director asked her to play the character that way. But if he /she did then my question would be "Did you read the book?" This isn't how Bella comes across at all in the books. But maybe I'm wrong. It's been almost a year since I read them maybe I should go back and reread the first book again.

Since the thread has already been hijacked, I'm going to add my two cents...

Pride and Prejudice is my all-time favorite novel. We won't talk about the recent movie [[shudder]], but the A&E miniseries does the book justice.

I too hesitated on the Twilight series, thinking that they were "teen fiction," but, as my fellow DIS Twigirls and Twiguys know, I am now a huge fan. Not "great literature," by any stretch, but very good reads with interesting characters and quite a unique storyline.

My other long-time favorite is "The Mists of Avalon." If you like historical fiction and are a fan of the Arthurian legend, you must read this novel - written from the perspective of the WOMEN in the story.

Like Kevin, I loved Pillars of the Earth.

Finally, I am currently working my way back through Gabaldon's "Outlander" series. Time travel has always intrigued me and these books are a rare combination of romance, a little science fiction (the time travel part), and accurate historical references. You get a history lesson with a dose of Jamie Fraser thrown in! What more could you ask for?

Really, Suz? See, I thought that Kristen was the PERFECT Bella all around. When you really compare the book to the big screen, Kristen is the epitome of this character. Bella was not a dignified girl. She was not comfortable in her own skin, thought she was clutzy, and was somewhat shy upon moving to Forks. I felt that Kristen pulled this off beautifully (she did say she read the book in an interview). I think part of the reason why is because that is actually how she is in real life. If you go back and look at interviews she did after Twilight's release, she truly is that stumbling almost uncomfortable-talking-to-others girl just like Bella.

I actually had issues with Robert Pattinson playing Edward when I first heard about it. I think that he did a good job though and is totally different from himself and the other characters he has portrayed before. Part of the reason I and probably so many people had trouble with the casting of Edward is because he is this near perfect being in the texts. That's a tough part for any actor to play, but I think Rob did it justice.

Oh, and as for Rob smelling bad? Could be. lol. I haven't heard that rumor too much, but last night I did hear that any female he has been seen with before was actually a beard. :scared1:

Ohhhh Dodie! Mists of Avalon was absolutely delicious!!! As a lit. major in college with a concentration on Medieval lit., this was one of several versions of the Arthurian legends that we read. It was pure delight and Marion Zimmer Bradley is an excellent author. Good call on the recommendation!!! :thumbsup

Ok, adding my 2 cents in here too . . .

I don't have a Kindle . . . yet. Have to find a pesky little thing called a job first. But it's on my list of things to get along with an iPhone (nope don't have one of those either).

Twilight - No, not the best fiction around but a good love story none the less once you get past all the teen angst. I thought the movie was good as long as you read the book first, otherwise you had no clue what was going on. I think Rob makes a perfect Edward!! Kristen, I didn't like at first but she's growing on me. Can't wait to see New Moon in November!!

Pride and Prejudice - have also never read it but I have it and it is on my list to read. I want to read Sookie Stackhouse series first, then I'll read it. I also want to read the Janet Evanovich series as well.

My issue with the entire True Blood/Sookie Stackhouse series was that it was SO fictional I could not get past it. Perhaps it has something to do with Twilight, but still. I can't get over the fact that the characters live in "harmony" with vampires. I'm sorry but even in Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series that was odd (although in the episodes they did make it work very well). I stopped reading the first book a little bit less than halfway in as a result. I couldn't watch more than 10 minutes of True Blood either.

Perhaps one day I'll pick it up and start over again, but not anytime soon. I know that there are many people who absolutely love these books though. Good luck! :)

Love the Outlander series!!!! What could be better than learning about history while falling in love with Jamie Fraser. :confused3:rolleyes1

I loved the Sookie series. You probably need to keep reading to get the series. I don't think the characters live in "harmony" with each others - Sookie is trying to and has the best luck of any of the characters but most of the other characters would love for the vampires to go back in the coffin and return to the ignorance of their existence. Maybe I liked the books because it was SO fictional - I think I read for escapism and must be drawn to love under difficult circumstances.:rotfl2:

I'm really looking forward to the new Dan Brown novel.

He's the guy that wrote The Da Vinci Code.

I've read all of his books and all are pretty good.

I think I read The Da Vinci Code in one sitting.

I used to do the same thing with Michael Crichton books.

The new book is called The Lost Symbol and comes out in September.

I saw the cover of The Lost Symbol online. I am looking forward to it. The DaVinci Code was incredible!

Tonya, perhaps I do need to go back and revist them. I'm usually all for the fictional aspect of reading, but something just did not sit right with me and this series. Eventually I'll give them another shot.

I'm halfway through Two for the Dough right now. I have the third already so I won't have to wait to continue. I've been lazy with my reading this past week and plan on plunging through TFTD today.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (I've never read it. It's time)

Jane Austen is what started my original lust for a Kendle! I got sucked into the series of Jane Austen movies that PBS did a while back and wanted to read everything she wrote. I thought about how easy that would be to do if I had a Kendle. Still don't have one, but my birthday is in a few weeks, the price on the smaller one just dropped, and DH follows instructions well in regard to gift giving. :goodvibes I think Jane and I will be spendinhg some quality time together in the very near future!

Wow! All of these book recommendations are fantastic! I've already downloaded samples of several of them to my Kindle so that I won't forget which ones were recommended.

I have to agree with all of you about the Twilight books. I had absolutely no interest in reading them, but my 21 year old daughter just loved them...she hasn't read this much in years (and now she wants a Kindle too)! When the movie came out on video, I watched it with her and hated it. When I got the Kindle, I decided to read the first book in the series. I loved it (and I'm a 52 year old woman)! I'm about 75% through New Moon (at least that's what my Kindle tells me) and I haven't been as crazy about it, but I'm sure it will have a great ending and I'll download the next one.

For those of you that are on the fence about purchasing a Kindle, I believe it is well worth the money. I am planning on buying one for my youngest daughter for Christmas this year, and probably one for my other daughter's husband (he reads constantly). Plus they just lowered the price by $60 last week!

Nikki...maybe I need to reread Twilight. I got the stuff about her being a clutz and awkward I didn't like how she played off Edward. I thought her feelings in the book were much more obvious then they came across in the movie. Maybe I am thinking of all the books together and she was more hesitant in just the first one.

I did read the entire Sookie Stackhouse series because someone recommended it. I thought it was a funny, light read. Nikki...if you didn't like the "living in harmony" aspect of the True Blood series you should read The Strain. No harmony going on there! It was a really good book.

I have read the first four, I think, books of the Outlander series. Really enjoyed them. I know she has written more I just never went back and read them. Maybe I will after I finish what I'm reading now.

I am really looking forward to the new Dan Brown book. I too have read everything he has written and enjoyed them all.

Right now I am reading a book that has been out a while called Prince of Thieves by Chuck Hogan. Here is the write up from Amazon: It is a story of doomed love focusing on Doug MacRay, a Boston-based career thief (he comes from Charlestown, "a breeding ground for bank and armored-car robbers") who becomes enamored with the manager of the bank he and his pals have just robbed. Claire Keesey, who has been badly traumatized by the robbery, later begins to develop feelings for him as well, unaware that a masked MacRay was the lead perpetrator in the heist that turned her life upside down. Hogan then leads readers through a long-winded labyrinth of inner reflection as Doug spends much of the book pondering whether he should quit the criminal life in order to pursue a deeper relationship with Claire.
The synopsis leaves out the fact that the FBI agent assigned to the robbery also has feelings for Claire.

When I want a break from murder mystery, psychological thriller type books I read Jodi Picoult. She writes some incredibly moving books. The current movie My Sister's Keeper is based on a Jodi Picoult book. Her subjects are not always easy to handle. The first book I ever read of hers was The Pact. It was about teenage suicide. The one I just read is a about a child born with "brittle bone" disease and her mother suing the OB for "wrongful death". She is an easy read but the subjects are not easy.
