Kindle cover advice...

:)

After a few minutes of piloting, I do see a need for a light. I see it likely that I'll be using the Kindle in at least two circumstances where ambient light is simply not sufficient. Given how frequently I figure I'll be reading in those specific circumstances, I think I might as well aim for a cover that has an integrated light, rather than relying on an adjunct.

So my specifications have been refined: No leather; with light. Also, I think I want one that holds the Kindle in place (rather than just a zippered cover within which the Kindle essentially floats or is supposed to magically adhere to a "textured surface").

So that seems to be leading me toward this:

and this:

Whattaya think? :)

Forgot about the leather thing (when things are provided for free and the individual item would exist anyway (better to be used than to sit in a drawer somewhere I sometimes feel), sometimes I forget about the issue, naughty me).

You might end up needing a hook-and-eye sticky patch thing with that cover, depending on how good the elastic is. Hubby got that for his cover for his Kindle 1, because the elastics weren't holding it in as perfectly as he wanted. But I really like that light, and now I might have to retire the free light-up case (though I dislike the neoprene type covers with a large burning passion).

I have the amazon cover with the light. It works great but I have been unable to use it because I sleep on the right side of the bed and the light shines into my husband's eyes no matter which way I try and hold it.

I'm finding that there is way too much glare on the screen. Is this a common problem?

The Kindle I got is "third generation" right? So I take it that the second generation covers won't work perfectly right?

Correct. I have both a kindle 2 and 3. I considered using the old cover on the newer kindle but the fasteners are separated by a different distance. So I ordered the basic, lighted cover and love it! I can read at night and not keep DH awake. I had tried the clip-on light on the older kindle and it was just too inconvenient.

Enjoy your kindle! It's addictive!

I have the amazon light case (not a surprise that I have it, as hubby works for the department), and it's very useful IF you are reading in the dark. I read it in bed, instead of having the bedside light on. It's BRIGHT! Very helpful. Also rather heavy, since the power, hmm, capacitor is the word hubby just gave me... is in the cover (there are connections that hook into the side of the kindle that both keep the kindle in the cover and give the, er, thing in the cover the ability to run the light. Sorry for the clunky wording there.

I'm not sure you would *want* to try to do anything like post to a message board on the Kindle, though.

Ask your hubby if there is a plan for a backlit version. On my Droid I can select a black background with white letters that is still backlit but doesn't look like it is. It is so nice for reading in bed, the car, etc.

I would hate a backlit version. I used Kindle for Android for a week or so and even with the white font on black my eyes would still hurt after an hour or so. I can read on my kindle for hours (I average about 6 a day) without any eyestrain.

If they do make a backlit version I hope they continue to make the non-backlit ones as well.

I have the M-Edge case for my second gen Kindle and I love, love, love it. It's been on there for a year now, and it's been perfect. However, I am thinking about investing into one of those waterproof bag cases for the pool and beach. I was using it at the beach this weekend and used a large Ziploc bag. It wasn't pretty, but it worked! (Redneck Kindle Case)
As for the book light, I bought one at Target last year and I think I've used it once...when the power was out! Honestly, if I'm reading in the dark (and I normally don't) I use my iPad for that. I really don't like reading on the iPad in light, but I will if I want to read in bed. I love the way that the kindle app interfaces with your Kindle and keeps up with what page you are on!

I didn't want to spend a fortune on a cover so I bought this one by Bundle Monster.

It's a lot better quality than I expected for the price. The blue looks a lot better in person; it's more of a royal blue.

I've only had my Kindle for a few weeks; the only time I've needed a book light was the other night when our power was off for 1 1/2 hours. I saw a few inexpensive clip-on lights at Target...I'm going to buy one soon.

Check out this great Kindle site:

Thanks for links ... bought one!

Just an update... so far the best option for a case I've been recommended is this Javoedge one:

Vegetarian-friendly, and I like the flip-up style. However, I don't think there is a light that is made for it, so that's really not going to work for me. If that's the case I suppose I have to go with the M-Edge one I mentioned above.

Actually, maybe I should wait for this one:

Assuming that it isn't actually leather.

I love that second case from the M Edge Store. My mom just bought herself a Kindle and needs a case. I was thinking about getting her one for Christmas, and this one is perfect (It comes in pink, which is a requirement for electronics cases to us!)

I got a VERY QUICK reply back from M-Edge, from two different CSRs within a minute of each other, confirming that that case is "man made" leather, i.e., animal friendly.

So now it is just a matter of waiting for that puppy to be released, I suppose.

UPDATED: I got another very quick reply from M-Edge in response to my reply to their question, "Is there anything else we can help you with?" I asked when the case would be available, and they replied very clearly that they couldn't say.

Thanks for this thread Bicker! I was just pondering non-Leather Kindle covers.

I wouldn't hold your breath on M-Edge getting it out anytime soon. When they were advertising the Guardian case for the Kindle2 they said it would be coming "in the spring." They didn't release it until End of May beginning of June.

Heck, that would be great if they would give a prediction like that and keep to it like that! Most of the time I see announcements like that, Spring turns into the next Winter! :)
