Is the kindle app on an ipad just as good as having a kindle? I've been wanting a kindle for quite a while but now I'm thinking about just going with an ipad and getting the kindle app (which I currently have on my iphone) because of all the other stuff you can do on a kindle.
What do you guys think? Good idea or bad?

My son-in-law uses the Kindle app on his iPad and enjoys it very much. I already had a Kindle, as did my daughter, when the iPads were released, so we use those.

The only downside I've heard of is that the screen is harder on the eyes and it is not great for reading outdoors ....like at the beach. Other than that, I can't see much difference either.

And it's difficult to use in sunlight.

I've also talked to people that say it's difficult to hold for long periods of time because it's so heavy. I'm pretty sure there is a stand or holder you can buy.

New Kindle recently announced $139

Like others have said, if you want to use the Ipad outdoors - forget it..

My sister has said the same thing about and she said that is difficult to read in indoors. She already has a Kindle but she wanted to check out the Kindle app on the iPad and she tried to read a novel but got blurry eyed after awhile. She downloaded some children's books and she said they are easy to read to her son because they are short and quick books.

I love, love, love the Kindle app for my iPad. I haven't brought it outside yet, though. :)

I have a Kindle and just got an iPad for work. I had to read a book for work and downloaded it to the iPad. I did not use the Kindle app, but the iPad bookstore.

I have to say that I enjoy reading on my Kindle much more than on the iPad. It is heavier and I have difficulty turning the pages so it slows my reading down. Also the backlit screen is not as easy on the eyes.

I love the iPad for all the other things it does, but for me the Kindle beats it for reading.

I have the Ipad(on it right now at the airport!) and use it mostly for reading. I wear glasses and even while reading a regular book my eyes would hurt! I have to say I have not had a problem reading on my iPad. You can change the brightness, the font and the size of the lettering. You can change it so the screen is black and the lettering white. I have read for hours with no problems at all. I have the Kindle app, the nook app, and the Borders one, as well as Apple's version. They are all different and I have to say I like the Kindle best. A huge selection, great prices, and quick and easy download. Once logged in you can have a book in less than 60 seconds. Also, all the books you download on your iPad can be used on your iPod, iPhone, or any Android phone(when you download the free kindle app). I love my iPad and use it for the Internet and all the cool apps!

Well the Ipad is not an e-reader and suffers from the weight, eye strain, glare and inability to use outside..

The Kindle is app is fine. It doesn't read as beautifully as the I-Pad IMHO, but the kindle has a bigger variety of books. I do hope Apple takes care of that.

Thanks so much for all the opinions. I guess it comes down to how much inconvenience I am willing to put up with in weight and lighting issue vs. the versatility of the ipad.
I'm leaning towards the ipad but I've got to hurry up and make up my mind because I'm going to be buying one or the other next week :)

I've read a couple dozen books now on my ipad, and I love it - I did notice the weight at first, but now its no bother at all. And you can't beat it for web surfing, email, and games. But - you really cannot use it outside at all, and that includes sitting in a car or restaurant etc. near windows. If you think you might want to read in sunny spots, don't get the ipad. Otherwise, its amazingly awesome.
