Kindle 2 or Barnes and Nobel Nook?

CNET gave Kindle extra half star, but I was wondering what 'real' people think?
I am tempted to get the Kindle. I like new releases and I like the idea of not having a lot of actual books around. We have enough. Any thoughts? The good, bad and ugly opinions are welcomed.

I bought my husband the Sony Reader for Christmas because he could check ebooks from public library with it and couldn't with the other two. He loves it and has read 3 books already. Don't know if this helps you but being able to check out books was a plus in our book. No pun intended

Have you gone to Barnes and Noble to try out the nook? I myself would get the nook but that is because I don't like the look of the Kindle and would only use it for reading and wouldn't need that little keyboard on the outside of it and I think it would just be wasted space. My SIL got one and its much bigger overall than I thought it was. Right now I have a Sony reader (pocket version) because I love the compact size, when its time for me to upgrade I'm going with the nook.
I don't think you could go wrong with the Kindle, I don't think I have ever seen a bad review

I love my kindle!

Can't speak of any positives or negatives about the nook or sony ereader, but the kindle is just awesome. I love being able to download books instantly, almost always for $9.99 or less. Tons of free books. Over 500,000 books available. Have looked up college textbooks for my nephew and found most of them available on kindle for half price or less. Love being able to carry my library with me anywhere. Whatever I'm in the mood to read, whatever genre, I can click right on it and have it instantly available on the last book I read.

Finally, I have the kindle app on my iphone. It sincs automatically with the kindle so that whether you read on kindle or iphone, you are on the last page you read.

Not sure what else to say. I find it very easy to use and there are always a ton of free books to read if I just want to try something different.

I also LOVE my kindle. I just looked at the Nook and didn't like the fact that it didn't have the keyboard, with the kindle you can just type the name of the book~I just think its easier.

I just use my ipod touch. There are a number of reader apps out there for it (including Kindle for iphone).

I also got a Kindle for Christmas and LOVE IT. It was a little hard for me to get over the idea of paying $250 for something I am STILL going to have to buy the books for but it is sooo convienent! I love that I can just click on a book and have it there. I am on book 4 or 5 so far.

The only downside I have found is that it can totally be a budget buster for me because when I finish a book I can just search for a new one rather than waiting to go to the store. Overall the books are a bit cheaper than what I buy them for but since I get 90% of my books at Walmart or BJ's they aren't THAT MUCH less. I haven't come across any free books that interest me yet, but I have looked too hard either.

I really do not know anything about the Nook, sorry. DD got her Kindle for Christmas and adores it. For her the size is "just right" because it feels like the size of a book (only thinner). The battery lasts a really long time and it was ridiculously easy for her to figure out how to use (she turned 13 the day after Christmas). Her aunts got her $70 worth of amazon.com giftcerts for "books" and she still has about $25 left after having bought 5 newer books (all came out after 2000) that hse has waned to own plus everything Mark Twain ever wrote, every play and poem Shakespeare ever wrote and every Sherlock Holmes story or novel Doyle ever wrote. Downlaods are super fast even here in Germany. The screen IS as easy to read as they say (I jsut read a Holmes aloud to DS). She and I have absolutely nothing but great things to say about it so far.

I have a Kindle and love it. I also use the Kindle app on my Iphone when I am waiting in line or at an appointment, etc.

I have had a Kindle since June of 2008 and haven't had any issues with it. I think the Nook is going to be a good product when they get the bugs of the first generation worked out, but overall most people who have done comparisons have been finding that more books are available for Kindle and at better prices than anywhere else.

I'm not interested in checking out library books so I don't care about that issue at all. I like having a web browser on the Kindle and I like the wireless downloading. I also like Amazon's customer support very much.

I really like my sony ereader touch. The only thing I don't like about it is there is a glare to the touch screen. (It has a real touch screen. The Nook says it has a touch screen, but I think it's only at the bottom where the book covers are. I don't think you can really turn a page by swiping your fingers on the screen (like with an iphone). You can turn pages by swiping your fingers on the sony ereader.)

Really the glare is the only thing I dislike. It's not horrible, but it is there. I've seen the Nook in person and I think it's very nice looking. Unfortunately, there are a ton of complaints about it on the Nook message boards. Lots of bugs with the first version it seems.

If you must get a Kindle 2 or a Nook, I'd go with the Kindle 2. Kindle was the first major ereader and they seem to have done it right. Kindle would be perfect IMO if it had a touch screen, but alas that touch screen is what gives glare, LOL.

Seems like it has the potential for a lot of page scrolling to me.

It is, but you can increase the size of the font. You just have to change the page more often.

Yeah, it's not quite the same as a real ereader.

I don't have a kindle yet, but I am getting one for my birthday in march! I am not the type who will buy many books, and I do use my library frequently for new releases (I don't mind waiting usually). There are tons and tons of free books on the kindle! I have the App on my iphone and use it a lot. It is a little small, but once you get used to it, reading is pretty easy. I also have kindle downloaded on my work computer and my laptop. I like that with the whispersync it automatically updates to my current page. I love the iphone capability because many times I will forget to grab a book or magazine to read but I always have my phone with me!

I didn't think a kindle was a good investment for me, but I have been pleasantly surprised with the amount of free content out there!

DDs kindle is very new so I am sure there are many other uses which people will post about. One thing you can do is highlight and make nots in your text (great if you are reading for a class or even a bookgroup) and the keyboard can be used for making those notes. You can also use it to search for a specific book or story, etc.
