Kindle 2 or Barnes and Nobel Nook?

I have heard nothing about this? Can you give me the link?
I have had mine for quite some time (actually bought Kindle 1- gave it to DD when 2 came out) and have had no issues so far.

I saw the reports of cracking on the Amazon reviews when looking at the Amazon case online. If you click on the reviews that give it 1 star, you'll notice that most of those reviews say that people experienced their Kindles cracking due to the case. As Dawn mentioned though, it sounds like it was because they weren't secured into the cases. Still, it scared me a bit.

I don't know much about the Nook but I can tell you that I am in LOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVEEEEEE:lovestruc with my new KINDLE!

For those with the Kindle... I have been leaning towards getting the Nook in part because I share books with my sister, and Nook has a "lend me" option, wherein I can lend my ebook to her to read for 14 days. Does Kindle have that option? I have been looking everywhere trying to find out, but couldn't tell. I do also like that the battery is removeable on the Nook, too. I read ALL the time, in excess of 300 books per year, so dh and I have been talking about an ereader as a way to keep the book storage from going up again; already have book cases in every room!

Not quite the same, but if you and your sister register on one another's Kindle accounts you can - Kindle books can be shared among (I think) 5 users on a Kindle account, so if your sister also has a Kindle, you can share books back and forth. Nook I think allows you to lend a book once for 14 (again, I think) days, and while it is being borrowed you don't have access to it.

I got a Kindle2 for Christmas, and I LOVE it. Thanks to kindleboards and searching amazon for "kindle 0.00" I have found a lot of free books from authors and genres I otherwise never would have tried and found quite a few keepers. I played with a Nook in a B&N store, and while I didn't dislike it I decided my Mommy made the best choice for me by going with the Kindle. I also love that amazon will literally become my bookcase if I want them to - everything I own uses SD cards for memory, so I have so many of them floating around that it's hard to keep straight which one was used for what device. lol

Thanks, but what if she wants to her Ipod Touch? Can you do that too???

Kristi - If you and your sister both have Nooks (or any other device onto which the Barnes & Noble software can be loaded) you can share one book at a time - IF the publisher has given permission for the book to be loaned out. The loan period is 14 days, and once you loan that book to the first person that's it - you can't loan it out a second time.

Kindle has NO loan feature, but if you both have Kindles and are willing to share an account (ie use one credit card) ALL of the books you purchase from Amazon can be downloaded to any Kindle on the account. That also includes IPhones and ITouches. Up to 6 devices may be linked to one account (actually you can link as many devices as you want to the account but usually a book has only 6 licenses to be on different devices so that's why you see the 6 devices referred to.)

If you both read pretty much the same thing it would be much to your advantage to get Kindles since ALL of the books you buy can be on her Kindle permanently at the same time and vice versa. If you just occasionally have something and you know she will be able to read it within a 14 day period then the Nook might be a better choice. (Except I love the Kindle so I think it would always be the better choice!)

There's only a log in page there. I'd like to read it, do you have another link?

When you guys talk about downloading from the library can you borrow new books? Is there any kind of wait?

I'm sorry to have posted a broken link - I thought I tested it, but I must not have.

MarkBarbieri, thank you for posting a good link.

DawnCT1, congratulations on your purchase!

Dawn - Have you received your Kindle yet? Just curious to see your opinion. :goodvibes

...would only use it for reading and wouldn't need that little keyboard on the outside of it and I think it would just be wasted space.

What is the keyboard actually used for? Book purchases?

Take notes on a book (for instance, I read "cozy" mysteries, and some authors have recipes, so I'll copy it and make a quick note to myself).

Type in a term if you suddenly want to go back and read where you met a character or something like that. Sometimes I zone out while reading, or something will sound familiar so I'll want to go back to where I first read it. Type in the name or descriptive word, hit Search, and it will show you all the places that word was used (in order front to back of the book). Helpful! Like control F on the computer. :)

And yes, to order.

It took me longer to pick out the case for it than it did to decide which one. I ordered the Kindle. I went to Cnet and a couple of other sites, and although it was very close, Kindle has upgraded some of their features so they have an edge over Nook; longer battery life, quicker response, etc. I was going to get the neoprine case but I read a couple reviews that it smelled bad. I have a sensitive nose, so I opted for leather, because leather always smells good. I added a light and now I will wait for it to arrive. Thanks everyone!

Congrats!

I inherited a hinged case (would not have bought leather...thankfully it doesn't smell at all...it's one that's by amazon) and while I have worried about what I might do to teh case, nothing has happened. And honestly, I think I would have to be actually abusing the cover/kindle combo in order to get it to crack.

My kindle arrived yesterday and I have read the user manual, downloaded a couple of sample and I almost downloaded a book that I have a paperback copy of. I knew I like that book. I just haven't had time to read it. When I downloaded the sample, I knew it sounded familiar. ;) Today, I hope to go through the list and see what I want to read. Is there a "free" list?

I know there are lists out there. I don't have a Kindle yet, but when I use the app on my iPhone I just go to the Kindle Top Sellers and scroll through the list for the $0 books. There are usually lots of free ones in there. I have never had a problem finding a free book to read.:thumbsup2

Dawn, if you go to the Kindle store and select the type of book you want (ie "Literary Fiction", etc.) you can then sort that list in a number of ways. Sort by "price low to high" and the free books will come up first. The menu is in the upper right hand part of the page.

You can go to amazon and search "kindle 0.00" and that will bring up quite a few; also, on kindleboards.com they have a subforum called book bazaar for people to post free and bargain kindle books (and other ebooks that will work on kindle - generally pdf).

One thing I've found about pdf books on the kindle - the font tends to be small, and you can't adjust font size on pdf like you can kindle/mobi format; what you can do is adjust the screen layout to be horizontal/landscape instead of vertical; pdf text is larger like that for some reason.

Have fun with your new "toy"!

Now you need a Borsa Bella case to put it all in! Love mine!

And if you truly downloaded something by accident, contact Amazon. They may be helpful and reverse it for you!

Enjoy, I love mine! Great for travel and just "having with you!"

Yeah, it's not quite the same as a real ereader.
The ipod touch (or iphone) isn't the same as a stand-alone ereader in that it has a quality color screen and it does far more than just serve as an ereader. The only downside is that you have to turn the page more often as you read your book. Since this is accomplished by merely touching the screen, that's not a big deal for me. As a bonus, an ipod touch can be purchased for considerably less than a kindle.

If you prefer to have things in a different format than pdf, you can send the document to your kindle address with the e-mail subject titled Convert. It will then reformat the file to a non-pdf version and send it to your Kindle. This costs $0.15 per MB I think. You can also send it to you free kindle address which will send the file back to your e-mail and you can manually put it on your Kindle for no charge. I like that I can read pdfs on my kindle, but prefer other formats because of the small pdf font, so I often use this.

Also, I often get free books on Amazon by checking out the best sellers for Kindle. If you go to Books, then Kindle Books, then click on All Kindle Bestsellers (bottom right hand part of the screen) you'll see many free books.

I disagree. I cannot read on my phone for any length of time because the screen is backlit. It kills my eyes. That's a huge downside for me and the reason I have a Kindle too.

I've found that simply adjusting the brightness level resolves that issue.
