Kindergarten mess Update #85!!!

You went to a school where the weather gets to 106 and you had no AC? :scared1: How hot would it be in the building? 120? Sounds unsafe healthwise.

Helene said they can’t open the windows:rolleyes1 Tons of kids, no AC and no fresh air. Frankly, that sounds disgusting.

Helene—are you in "Chen" or NSkook (trying to be discreet ;) ). If it is "Chen", then I feel so sorry for you. The number of illegal immigrants feeding into that district could rival any school nationwide. So sad that children of legal, taxpaying citizens are paying the price for this:guilty: I don't know how this is happening.

If it got too hot inside, the teacher were take us outside and hold class in the shade on the grass. They just put AC in the schools here over the last 10 years with grants from Bush's No Child Left Behind program. Most of the schools here were built after WW II to hold all those baby boomers, I think like 80% were built between 1950 and 1960 with no A/C.
The kids I feel sorry for are the one's who grew up in this area 150 years ago. No AC in the schools, and they spent June, July and August out in the hot sun working on their family farm!

It was 106 here day before yesterday, and someone stolen wiring from one of the schools knocking out the a/c. Cause a big discussion at work about how can they hold school in the heat. Well, as someone who grew up here, and went to school K-12 in classrooms WITHOUT A/C, I don't get what the big deal is.

I think our kids are a wee bit spoiled.
.

:sad2:

I had no AC too-
HOWEVER-back in the olden days the classrooms were designed differently-one whole wall faced outside and was literally a wall of windows-jalloisied-that stayed open-ceilings were taller and all the inside doors had those window air ducts above them to allow for circulation.

Today's schools have windows that do not open-like most modern office buildings.

I had no A/C either. In fact if they stay in this same district they'll go to the same school building I was in for HS but I did NOT have 150 kids in a one room no window, no door open room when I was in school ;) I'm not asking for AC I'm asking for a normal class room... with doors and windows... I know my special snowflake will survive even in the gym classroom. I understand this... I still dont have to like it. Who knows I might grow to love it ahahaha

You are not going to love it but you may learn to tolerate it. Give it a few weeks and see how your little one does. Honestly, they are way more resilient than we give them credit for and somehow seem to adjust to conditions that older ones would never be able to manage.

I do agree about the AC though. I would wager I went to school in the complete dark ages cmpared to you and would nto wish those hot classrooms on anyone, especially considering the design that these kids have.

Good luck tomorrow!

Holy update batman!

So last week it was brought to my attention there is no heat in gym well that was my final straw (as some of you know from on facebook) I started calling the board of edu. in harrisburg... I finally made a report after talking to a few people ;) I am not sure if it was my calls or not but they are moving back into their classrooms!!! You see I found out they were going to be EMPTY until the spring when they finally knocked out the walls to build them into the new addition!! Holy cow I'm so happy!! I heard move date is Oct 9th!! I'm sooooo thrilled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel your pain. Glad to see it was resolved. I teach beginning strings (4th and 5th grade) and our building is so overcrowded that I am teaching in the hallways! Beginning strings!

Must be a regional difference. No new buildings here The elementary school I attended in 1963, the Intermediate School I attended in 1969, and the High School I was at 1972-1975 are still in use, all built in the 1950's. Of course, they have added a/c to them in the last 10 years. Around here, enrolling is plunging, and schools are being closed and sold off. They started closing schools here in 1984. I think they have closed 25% of all the schools in the district I live in since then, and built just 1 new school, in a new subdivision, where there was a $5,000 tax per new house to pay for the new school.

:cheer2: Way to go for helping them get back in a normal classroom! But I have to say, WTH on the classrooms being empty all year and using the gym!?! Who's genius idea was that?!?

I think most of us were asking the same question when we found out they were open at open house! His poor teacher was nearly in tears when she was talking to us.. she was sneaking them back into their old room for phonics it was too loud to teach them in the gym :( :sad2:

But they were saying that there was no room??? Wow, that's a big lack of logic, isn't it?

Glad you got someone to listen to reason...

Very interesting point. My elementary school had no AC but we survived, but when I think about the rooms, yes, they had one wall of tall windows, tall tall ceilings, the windows had tops and bottoms that could be "pushed" out (or in?). Whereas the other two elementary schools in the area, same era but more "modern", were built for air conditioning. Short rooms, no big windows, more airtight. Interesting. Thanks for that!
