We got great AP rates last December for the week of Xmas (Dec. 21-23) at the last minute. We already had Hampton Inn for 3 nights and decided a few days before we left to use our extra OT check to extend our stay and stay onsite for the first time and surprise the kids...(the day we checked out of Hampton Inn they thought we were heading home). So I'm not all that surprised that there is availability and I don't think the great rates came out until end of November or early December last year.

I'm not surprised that the lower rates haven't shown up at all, given the way the AP calendar rates have been released in the last year, especially for the busy seasons. Remember I said in one of your other threads (at least I think it was your thread) a while back that last year's October AP rates did not come out until mid-September? That's 2 weeks before October began, and they released the rates. A bunch of us were waiting on the October rates and many people had to go on and make plans at other hotels because they had to book something and couldn't wait any longer.

Heck, to be honest, the last few times time I checked the AP hotel calendar, there were no good rates for November at all - everything was over $200 for the PPH, which is not good - and we are IN November now. Plus, it seems like when there are good rates released, they don't appear until later and later.

I have a PIN code offer for the PPH in December for $163 a night (35% off). My arrival date is supposed to be 12/12. I was planning to switch to an AP rate if a good one came out before my trip. But at this point I have a feeling that my PIN code might be better than what the AP hotel calendar shows, or the AP calendar might not have a good rate available in enough time before I leave.

There was lots of availability at all 3 hotels in December 2008 as well - all the way into December, they still had lots of openings. It's just too expensive, and too many people are having financial difficulties. So many people are staying offsite, I guess.

I'm anxiously waiting. I desperately want to stay on site, but just can't justify over double my HoJo reservation (no ENT rate either!), even for PPH! If they would just cut some, enough so I felt like it was "a deal" then I would book right away!

Most of the time, there are certain blocks of rooms that are held for specific discounts. So if there is a special PIN that's circulating around, there may only be a designated number of rooms attached to that PIN offer. Same thing with the AP rate rooms (not the AP 10% discount, but the good rates) - they hold a certain number of rooms at all 3 hotels just for the AP rate people, so the number of available rooms is limited.

Based on that, I kind of get the feeling that what DLR is doing - and I have no proof of this, but it's a strong guess - is holding more rooms for the people who are booking at the regular rack rates, so they can make more money, and designating fewer rooms for the PIN discounts and AP holders. They've had so many good discounts and promos in the last two years - the 'get 5 for 3 deal' is one of the best ones, but there have been lots of them - that, chances are, DLR is trying to compensate now by cutting back on the highly discounted rooms in peak seasons, like the AP rate rooms. They are probably holding out as long as they can to see how many bookings they can get at the regular prices (or with the minor discounts like 10%) before they release any rooms at the good AP rates.

I think that's why last year and this year, the AP rates seem to be much slower in coming out. Again, I could be wrong, but I just have a hunch that they are holding out on releasing AP rates until they can get tons of regular rack rate bookings. Basically, this is the backlash of things like the 'get 5 for 3' deal during the rest of the year.

Essentially, as long as DLR is still offering any kind of discount (365 days a year, no less) to AP holders, they can fulfill that promise for AP discounts, which is part of the AP 'package' that we all buy into. They can tell us that they may not always have the 'real' AP rates available, but that AP holders get 10% off 365 days a year.

I think it is kind of weird that they would do it that way. When I worked at a hotel, (it is well known in my city and sells out 365 days a year...and that is rare for any hotel) the thought process was it was better to lower rates and sell out than take a loss on an empty room.

I know I am lucky because we got the Seniors rate at the DLH, and I highly doubt that they will release anything for more than 30%. I'm just kind of surprised that their aim isn't to sell out. The Grand Californian still has standard rooms available..and I think that is because they are so expensive.I would think that the standard room would go first in any of the hotels (because they are the least expensive), but as of right now both DLH and the GCH have tons of availability.

Off topic, but be sure to keep on checking your dates for the entertainment rate! A date that I wanted was once listed 3 days before I would have checked in. And for the Divas trip two years ago, I think it was listed THAT day.

I've often thought of this as well. We were considering staying tonight in one of the hotels and as of yesterday, there was still availability. But the AP rate was well over $200. If it had been more around $150, we would have done it for sure.

Seems they'd want to sell out the rooms...
