Kim Possible Disappointment

For all the people who disagreed with me, and cited Mulan sometimes being portrayed by a Caucasian women, rather than an Asian one (as being disappointing), I remind you that the OP was disappointed that a traditionally Caucasion role was being played by an Asian person. That's what skeeved me out.

Sure, it's a fantasy, just like Santa Claus. He's usually portrayed as white, but it wouldn't upset me if my mall had a black Santa. Would it make my child not believe in Santa to perceive that? Would it wreck my kids' childhood memory of WDW to see an Asian Kim Possible? Well, for one thing, she's a cartoon, and there's a flesh and blood representation of her standing there, so it's already a leap.

I respectfully submit that I'm not playing the race card, or trying to be militantly PC, just a little disappointed that someone would be disappointed by an Asian girl playing a 'white' cartoon role.

That's all! Have a good day!

It seems you are Skeeved(?) that the OP was complaining about a traditionally Caucasion role was being played by an Asian person as this was wrong but not the other way round!

It does seem PC

Here are the Kim and Ron we saw in Sept.

I'm lucky enough to know the "friend" of that particular Ron. He is dating a girl who is a "friend" of Alice. They are adorable and cool people.

Why did you have to do this. For weeks to come, I am going to have to explain to people why I am laughing at seemingly nothing. This image will stay with me forever.

Just jumping in this thread to say..... I agree with this.

:rotfl:

I saw Kim but didn't have a picture with her, she was white. I think Dh would have really liked his picture with her.

I for one do expect to see the character look like they do in the movie. There is nothing wrong with that. I could go on and on about how it annoys me that people want to throw a racist card the minute a someone admits that we all have different skin colors.

They do need to keep a consistency. Kids do notice. As far as Santa goes, we have had to limit dd to seeing Santa once a year. Last year she was really questioning the differences in appearance of Santa. She also asked why Mrs. Clause wasn't the same person when we saw her. This is coming from a 3 year old. She would definitely question why Cinderella had brown eyes and black eyebrows or Mulan had green eyes and red eyebrows. Especially if she saw them in the park the next day and they looked completely different. And I am not about to say, "Well honey, Disney is working hard to keep a happy PC environment". NO way, I want her to believe she is truly meeting Cinderella and Mulan.

Ummmm...I think you've just provided a textbook example of both "playing the race card" and being "militantly pc". Like the other poster pointed out...you're saying that it is okay to be disappointed if the Asian character is played by a white woman, but that it is "skeevy" to be disappointed if the white character is played by an Asian woman.

Yep...no PC run amok there. :rolleyes1

If the OP had come across a blonde Kim Possible (hmmm.... now THAT sounds interesting, blonde, half-shirt.... oh, wait, did I say that out loud?), and complained that she didn't like a blonde woman playing a red-headed character, would you have a problem with it?

Again the OP, and others are specifically complaining about how different the character looks from what they expect. The fact that race is the reason for the difference does not in and of itself indicate a problem. You're assuming too much.

Many face characters were wigs

Yes, they do. To make them look like the character the guests expect.

I suppose I should have been more clear and said if a brunette was playing Cinderella without a wig, dye, highlights, digital enhancement, or any other tool, implement or accessory that would make her appear as a blonde Cinderella.

In other words, a brunette that appeared as a brunette Cinderella.

I do not know what point you are making.

Seriously, the overriding point is that the OP complaining about an Asian Kim Possible is about the appearance of the character, not race. It would be the same as a brunette playing Cinderella. Certainly some would complain about that, and nobody would give then any flak over it.

You, in response to that, said "Many face characters wear wigs".

I responded to you to clarify that when I said a "brunette playing Cinderella", I meant a brunette playing Cinderalla as a brunette.

I FULLY agree with this. I find it ridiculous to think something is "skeevy" just because the OP expects that the characters remain consistent from screen to reality. No matter how one tries to justify it, the comments were most definitely playing the race card AND being militantly pc. There's just no getting around it.

Then the comparison of Santa? Give me a break, that's not even the same thing because different cultures have different versions of Santa. These characters, however, do NOT have different versions from one Disney movie/show to the next. Kim Possible is always a Caucasian with red hair. So guess what that translates to in real life? You guessed it...a caucasian with red hair. It's not that difficult to accept and it's most ridiculous to be critical or think something "skeevy" just because people expect the characters to actually look like what the character has been shown to us the whole time.

I think that people should refrain from jumping to conclusions about anyone's nationality based on how they think they look. I happen to know a friend of KP's whom everyone assumes is Asian but she is most definately NOT. Just goes to show you can't judge a book by it's cover huh?

.

In that case I agree
