Kilimanjaro Safari Scare - or normal?

Interesting story

The first time we went on the safari a car was stopped in front of us and there was a rino along the side. he circled and began to walk by and as he did he stopped and urinated on the other car as they were driving away. he stayed close to the path and we go so close up shots of him.

But I would have hated to have been in the back of the other car :rotfl2:

This was nothing unusual.

Thanks for all the feedback. There seems to be pretty broad agreement that this wasn't all that odd, which was my assumption. I thought I'd ask around in case I was wrong-- I mean, if I have a near death experience I'd like to at least notice! :rotfl2:

Others have told me that there is no way that the rhinos or most of the animals could get anywhere near our vehicle. I know that certain species like the hippos and the lions are kept separate(moated) but I know that the rhinos were right there and nothing separted them from our vehicle.

The "others" who told you, told you wrong.

As you stated, MANY of the animals can walk on the same roads as the ride vehicles.

And that's why so many times the vehicles must stop to allow animals to move out of the road.

The white rhino, Giraffe, Eland, Impala, Tommies, Wildebeest, Ankole cattle, scimitar-horned Oryx, ostrich, zebra, bongo, kudu, and sable antelope are all free to cross the ride path and can all come right up to the vehicle. There is absolutly nothing seperating those animals from the trucks. The black rhinos however are seperated from the trucks.

But all those animals are audioanimatronic, remember???? ;) :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2:

It KILLS me that people still believe this!!!!

I have a picture, but I still don't know how to post those darn things!!! BEAUTIFUL giraffe RIGHT next to our vehicle. We're all ooohhhing and ahhhing and Mr. (or Ms.) Giraffe decides to see what all the fuss was about!!! Leaned that L O N G neck down and looked RIGHT in our window!!! The picture is one big giraffe snout!!!! (is that what they call them???) I thought it was SO cool!!!! The head was still outside the vehicle, so its not like we could (or would) touch the giraffe. But I KNOW I've never been THAT close before!!

I'm so glad he/she didn't SNEEZE!!! AK would be a little uncomfortable if I had to walk around with giraffe snot on me all day!!! But what a souvenier!!! :teeth:

You're lucky he didn't lick you-I had a lick from one at Busch Gardens-very long, very wet, slimy, sandpaper tongue.... :crazy2:

A driver at KS told us that they had had one incidence of a Rhino charging the vehicle that it tore it up enough they felt the need to retire the vehicle.

AHHHHGGGGGGGG!!! Ok, that would have probably grossed me out!! But that's TOO FUNNY!!! I don't know WHAT I would do if I saw a giraffe tongue coming at me!!!

our very first time we were on KS we also had an encounter with a rhino. we were going along, seeing quite a bit of wildlife when suddenly the vehicle stopped and we were told we had to wait for a rhino to either move away from the road or simply cross the road. when i looked out the right side window, i was looking out the other side, all of a sudden there it was almost close enough to touch. there is really nothing to compare the feeling of suddenly being so close to something like a rhino. i was amazed and almost scared at the same time. it turnrd its head slightly and seemed to look directly at me. everyone was just amazed and you could feel the excitement of everyone. never had an experience like this before and the feeling of being awed and scared at the same time made that first time on KS a memorable one.

Joshsmom- if you like being close to giraffes, you should go to the Pensacola Zoo. I have the most beautiful picture of my hubby kissing a giraffe on the nose. I was going to post it but I can't get my scanner to work. You can feed them and pet them there. They'll do anything for you as long as you have food! ;)

I would love to be at the animal "meeting" , I can just see it now....

The cast :
Randy - Rhino #1
Reba - Rhino #2
Gerald - Giraffe #1
Stretch - Giraffe #2
Zelda - Zebra #1
AJ - Ostrich #1

The Time: Spring Break - Friday morning animal "meeting"

Randy - "ok guys listen up, I dont know what's going on but the traffic is getting out of hand this week. We need to come up with a plan to slow things down".

Stretch - "I agree, I cant even take a walk without seeing a truck full of nosey tourist acting like they have never seen a giraffe before"

Reba - "we could always ram the trucks, that always seems to stop things for a little bit"

AJ - "Or how about this ... I could block the road and Reba could go pee on them"

Zelda - "ohhh that would be so funny, we could get a good lauph out of that"

Gerald
- "Ok but I want to sneeze on at least one truck, maybe that way they stay on Main St. USA and off Kilimanjaro Rd."

Sorry my mind does wander :rotfl2:

Welcome to the DIS boards!

Some of us here have ridden the Safari dozens of times.

Every ride is different, but most are "normal" (I would not say "boring" :goodvibes ).
Its the times that something UNUSUAL happens (like "charging" rhinos) that we REMEMBER the most.

All the other times we ride, its just fun to see what all the (NON-charging) animals are up to. :thumbsup2
