Anybody's kids NOT do it? I wasn't really planning on buying cards, but part of dd's homework tonight was to start writing her Valentine cards!
I'm sure I'm in the minority with this, but it just seems like such a waste. They write them, exchange them, bring them home, and throw them in the trash.... I don't really see the point.:o

The point is being a kid and having fun getting cute, fun cards. :D Wish I could get some!

It is a right of passage. Something that has to be done. Try the Dollar Store for the same boxes of cards but more inexpensive.

I agree. I miss those days when my kids had valentines to do. Heck, I miss those days when I had valentines to do! Make it easy, have your child sign his/her name and don't address the outer envelop except the one for the teacher. Just make sure there is enough for everyone.

I'm not a big gift/party occasion person, but I love Valentines. They are inexpensive (and homemade are considered extra special) so children can all participate. The children enjoy them. Even my 5th grade boy goes through each one and reads and enjoys them. Since I know they only cost about 10 cents apiece I feel no guilt about them getting thrown out.

I get irritated when people enclose a bunch of candy and toys though. I think it turns something very sweet and simple into yet another gift extravaganza.

I'll be so glad when younger DS is in middle school next year and we can skip the Valentine stuff. They want the kids to know that telling a lie is not right yet tell them they have to exchange cards with all the kids in the class. Last year I attended DSs party and felt sorry for the one lil chubby kid. One boy told him straight out he didnt like him and only gave him a card because he had too. Not sure what I should have done but I promptly sent him up to the teachers desk so she could handle it.

J.C. bought his Saturday. They love doing this and with this year being the last year it will be done (6th grade) I think they are all having a contest on who can get the silliest cards. His have farm animals with really big eyes on them...they are so cute but so silly.

I always remember how much fun it was exchanging Valentines and then at Christmas bringing a boy or girl present under $5 dollars.

Kristy is right, its about being a child and haveing fun, and its cheap too thank goodness.

Actually, that was a good teaching situation. ALL kids should get valentines from EVERYONE in the class, and that one student who decided to be a jerk should have been taught a good lesson in apropriate behavior.

I teach Second Grade and my students love this holiday. We only get to have 2 parties a year. I think that they enjoy this one at school the most. Please let her participate and enjoy this time. Valentines might seem silly to adults, but children do enjoy giving and receiving the cards.
Happy Valentine's Day!

valentines are one of my kids favorite things to do. My dd will spend hours at home just going through them, she always feels what valentine the child picks out to give says a lot about that child. She spends a long time in the store picking out just the right ones. Example:Abbie likes Lizzy too!! or Justin must like basketball, I didn't know that about him. She will tell something about each child that she gets a card from as she is going through them.

Carol is correct, it is a right of passage. You should enjoy the time while their lives are full of innocence and fun for a silly holiday. If purchasing valentines is a big deal, make some.....it's really not a lot of money.

This is my DD first year at school and we're both excited about her party. I picked up some cards and they have pencils that go through them. Her class just loves getting pencils. If I can squeeze a sucker with the pencil, that will just be an added treat. I think i'm so excited because my parents never did stuff like this with me when I was younger so i'm living it through my DD;)

right of passage LOL! I sent them to my family members when I was in College! In high scool I sent white roses to all of my friends and my now husband sent me red roses. Now, i give valentines to my mom, my kids..and uh..oh yeah..my Dh too! I guess some habits never die!LOL!

OMG! My DD4 still has her christmas cards up in her room from the christmas exchange. Today the list came home for valentines. Boy is she excited. I bought 20 boxes of valentines last year on clearance for 10 cents each so she can personalize to what each friend likes boy or girl.

One Cool Mama- Me too this is my favorite holiday! Life is to serious it is nice to take time and do somethng silly! I send V day cards to everyone! (I guess that is one thing MDer's and VAer's can agree on)lol

This is my first year being room mother and i can't wait for the party at my son's school. It is fun now that I'm the parent and not the teacher anymore! My DS and DD spent hours "reading" their extra ones from last year , lining them up all over the floor etc.. (they are 3 and 4) Speaking as a fomer teacher their are many teachable moments involved. Pre reading and pre wrinting etc.. I could go on and on

LOL!

I am the room mom for Nico's(3) class. My DD is 1, but I hope to stay this involved with her too. I haven't told Nico about V-day yet. I sort of started to explain it, but I think we will talk about it this weekend and take a special trip to the store so he can pick them out himself. Glad to hear you VAers are fun! I am starting to like you guys more and more!LOL

I loved it as a kid, making the mailbox for my desk out of a shoebox, lace doilies and construction paper, waiting to see if I would get one from "that" boy (of course, we had to give them out to everyone but still...), picking out the prettiest one for "that" boy but forgetting to sign my name... I wonder how different my life would be if I had remembered to sign my name on that card in 6th grade :lovestruc

I love receiving Star Wars, Disney, and Jurassic Park Valentine cards, from my neices and nephews...I have saved each one.

OK, go ahead and just say it. I'm a scrooge!

As a first grade teacher, I can tell you that the kids in my class love receiving Valentines. I don't require that they do this or assign it as homework though. I remember that I treasured getting those little Valentines when I was a kid. I probably still have them tucked away in my mom's attic somewhere.:D
