Do any of your children have scooters? Can you tell me about them- advantages/disadvantages over power chair? My son has a power chair, but transporting is an issue. Scooters are lighter and fold/come apart easier for transport from what I understand.

A power chair is fitted to the person.

An ECV takes a lot of upper body strength to control. Not only does the driver have to be able to manipulate the control, but also to steer it. Normally an ECV is used by a person who has mobility or stamina problems but does not need a wheelchair for most functions. For example, I do not need a chair in my house, and can walk up to about a hundred yards without a problem; more than that and I need an ECV.

My 13 year old son has the Traveller Elite plus scooter. He has had it for a year now. It has a smaller basket on front and big basket on back. Perfect for Disney and carrying bags! It is lightweight and folds up more compact then his wheelchair. His panels change. He can have a silver, blue or red scooter if he wants. He has the 4 wheel scooter because of better stability and he loves the independance it gives him. He is very cautious of others and turns his speed down low in crowds. I love not having to push a heavy wheelchair in the Florida heat. My son's scooter was covered here in Canada.

His scooter comes apart in 5 smaller pieces the heaviest piece weighing 35 pounds. It comes apart quickly and is put together quickly as well. It comes apart quicker and puts together quicker then my son's wheelchair!

Anymore questions. Please ask....

i am a small adult (about the size of a 13 yr old boy), and i am getting a powerchair. I cannot control an ECV because it requires too much strength and motor skill in my arms...

my suggestion is to find a company which has a large location where you can try these in person, so you can find out if it works for him...

DD can't use a scooter because of positioning needs. She would have the strength to propel it and can sit up without assistance, but she has special seat cushion requirements and also needed a custom size seat. But if your son could physically handle one, it might be a good choice for short trips. I agree that testing it out would be a great idea. Whenever DD's doctor or physical therapist wants to change something about her chair, we go to the wheelchair clinic at the local hospital and they measure her and let her try new things out.

Good luck!
