Kids movies not to watch with kids

My DS is 6, turning 7 in March. He loved Coraline, so did DD who was 11 at the time she saw it. DH and I did go to see it alone first to make sure it was OK for the kids. I did read the book first and DD read the book before seeing the movie as well.

My kids love some of the movies mentioned, like Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Xmas, Harry Potter, etc..... DS also loves Indiana Jones!

I remember that I was scared to DEATH of alice in wonderland when I was little (the old disney version). The new one looks even more scary!! Just based on the comercials. My brother was really scared of Cruela De vil in the not animated 101 dalmations. We were at the movie theater and her cried!! I think he was scared of all the makeup on her face...

My kids were scared to death of Ursula in The Little Mermaid.

I think Marley and Me. It was marketed as a family movie but I wouldn't let my kids see it. Not because the dog dies but the sexual inuendos that are throughout..like Jennifer Anniston stripping when getting into the pool. Just not something appropriate for my kids.

As another poster mentioned, it was not marketed as a kid's movie. I would have thought that the R rating would have been enough to convince parents not to take their kids to it, but just after it came out I heard tons of parents complaining that their kids were so upset after seeing the movie. Apparently the fact that it's sort of a fantasy and has lots of interesting creatures in it made some parents think it was a kid's movie. Sort of like all the parents who took their little kids to the South Park movie because it was a cartoon and therefor must be a kid's movie and then were furious that it was so offensive. Parents need to do a little research before they take their kids to a movie, and not just assume it's okay because it "looks like" a movie for children. They at least need to check the rating!

::yes:: This is a pet peeve of mine. Far too many people out there think that fairy tale/animation=kids, which is definitely not true! A little research goes a long way.

Thank goodness!

I had not seen it out in the theaters. My DH saw it on line and purchased it because it had a "cool" cover photo. :rotfl2: Men.

I couldn't understand how the OP thought it was in the same league as Coraline.

Your right, not the same genre, but I enjoyed both for similar reasons...fantasy, story, great visuals.

The one movie that comes to my mind is Watership Down. It's an animated movie, but it's not for kids. Even the book isn't exactly for kids.

That's a tough one for me. My mother read the book to me when I was little (I know I was younger than 8, probably closer to 6 or 7) and I remember it being incredibly sad. I wasn't over traumatized, but at the same time, I'm just not sure if I want to put my kids through that sadness. It is a great story though.

Gotcha. My mistake. I thought you meant they were both geared towards children.

And it was a very cool background story for the Pan one. I just wish it was a bit tamer and my kids could see it. Right now, nope, I'd be up for weeks dealing with the nightmares.

Secret of NIMH, mainly cause the subject matter is more 'adult", and I think a lot of kids would be bored with the subject matter as it is really deep and intense...That being said I LOVED the book/story as a child.

Now you tell me. ;)

We watched Coraline a few months ago with my then six year old. He loves Ghost Hunters and other scary things (we don't let him watch gorey things, of course), so I didn't hesitate. He hated it! It really scared him and if we mention the movie now he gets angry - he just hated it that much.

Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie, I don't think I will let my kids watch it yet it has it scary moments

This was dd13's first movie in a theater, and she was 2 (they brought it back to the theaters briefly). She loved it!

That's probably a good thing - "Transformers" definitely isn't a kid's movie. It's was rated PG-13 and kids were not the target audience. I do think it's fine for older kids, but most 4 or 5 year olds are probably not ready for a movie like that.

I agree completely about Transformers. We rented them...the first one we let our 10 year old watch (it was a couple of years ago, right...so he was maybe 8?) There was some stuff in there, besides violence, that he was not ready to see or hear. The one that just came out recently, we didn't let him watch. My DH said it was a horrible movie anyway (I didn't watch it...and the only reason he and my 14 year old watched it is because the beginning was filmed here in Bethlehem in the old Bethlehem Steel plant!)

The thing that really bothers me is that even though it may not be for kids, the industry markets it that way by marketing it through Burger King and McDonalds and selling the Transformer Kids Meals with the toys. I absolutely HATE that!!

It is the strangest thing but I can't open the third page of this thread so I apologize if someone has already mentioned this...
Bridge to Terabithia. I TOTALLY did not expect what happened! I thought it was a movie about mythical creatures. I watched it with my nephew and I SOBBED. I think it is the type of movie that you can watch with kids but be prepared for a good discussion afterwards, some kids probably could not handle it.

I took my kids to see Coraline in 3D. They loved it! We also saw others on the list mentioned here. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter (all of them), Pirates of the Carribean, Old Yeller, etc. And I'll admit it, I let them see movies that are rated above their age group. I took them to see The Lovely Bones. My youngest is almost 10. She had a lot of questions after the movie, and although we had discussed the dangers of talking to strangers and being careful, it was a very good conversation about how to handle acquaintances.

So do I get the award for Bad Mommy of the Year 2010 or what? :rotfl:

No, that goes to me! My kids have seen all of those movies (except The Lovely Bone) and more! My DD6's favorite movie is The Grudge. They watch a lot of movies that they probably shouldn't but they get away with it because of older cousins and such. They go to my aunt and uncle's house for sleepovers with 3 of my cousins who are 15, 16 and 17 and they have a blast! The way I see it, a movie is just a movie, if they need to close their eyes, they will, they also get pillows thrown over their face if there's a scene coming up that they absolutely do not need to see. The FF button gets a lot of use too.

I really agree about the "depends on the kid" part. My husband took our son to see Jurassic Park in the theatre when he was 4 (long time ago) and he absolutely loved it.

I was 5 when I saw it and I loved it too! To this day it's my favorite movie.

Of course, my mom took me to see Scream when I was 8 and that didn't scare me either... the only movie that has ever scared me was seeing 28 Weeks Later in the theater and I was 19 then, lol.

ITA. That makes me so mad. It makes the kids think the movies are okay for them to see. They do this with a lot of movies. :headache:

Me either, but she loves it, is not at all scared by it. :confused3 She has probably watched that movie a million times by now, that little boy still gives me the creeps.

My youngest (9) saw that movie when it first came out on DVD. She laughed at that stupid sound the little boy made. It didn't scare her in the least. She said it was "lame".

My oldest is pretty brave and loves to be scared, But she couldn't sit through Limety Snickets.
Jim Carey performance really creeped her out.

My dd (9) was watching Coraline this morning, then ds (8) gets to watch Wolverine. We watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory a few years ago on New Years. We all love Corpse Bride. Wizard of Oz is a favorite especially of mine. I haven't let them watch Old Yeller just bc I cry to much, lol. Bridge to Teribithia is another we have watched, but I'm the crier in this one too. I want to be in the nominations too!
