Just watched Coraline. How awesome. Do not watch it with a child under 12. This is marketed as a kids movie, but far from it.

The last movie in this genre that I enjoyed as much was Pan's Labyrinth.

Any other suggestions?popcorn::

I'm glad you enjoyed it, but why would you make a blanket statement like that? I think it totally depends on the kid. :confused3

My son saw "Coraline" at age 5 and LOVED it. We bought it on DVD and he's watched it over and over and over. We also read the book to him which he loved so much we bought him the audio book. He loves stuff that's a little creepy and dark. For him, it was a huge hit.

I think you just have to know your child.

I thought that last scene was pretty intense. You're right, depends on the child, just as a child might be fine in the dark at age 4, but afraid at age 7. I just loved the movie.

A Christmas Carol 3D

I would not recommend watching that with a young child. I took a 7 yr old and he was scared during a few scenes. He told me he wished we had seen something else.

My kids liked to Coraline, but the 5 year old did hide behind the couch during the last scene the first time we watched it. :scared: Woops!

The rest of these are fine for some kids, but not necessarily for others (mine have seen them):

Any of the Shrek movies (due to some language and the nature of the humor)
Corpse Bride
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Spiderwick Chronicles

My dd was 9 when we saw this, in the theater, in 3-D.:rolleyes:Thre were lots of kids in the audiance. They were all fine.

My brother will not take his sons who are 4-5 to see "Transformers" due to the violence of the movie.

my kids love the Shrek movies---but a lot of the humor goes over their heads

It does totally depend on the child.

DS likes Coraline and Corpse Bride. Both are favorites in our house.

The first time he saw Chicken Little, he was 4 and the scene with the aliens in the cornfield really scared him. He is still a little afraid of the angler fish in Nemo.

Pan's Labyrinth was marketed as a kid's movie?? Holy Cow, what were they thinking??

We saw it. Not too thrilled I would have to read the entire movie out loud to my kiddo who doesn't read fast. There were a lot of intense not for children scenes. But I nearly croaked when the bottle smashing the face scene happened. Who puts that in a kid's movie? I saw it without the kids and there is no way they are watching that any time soon.

ETA: But I liked it okay for me.

Coraline was terrifying. My younger one was fine but my teenager was really scared.

I agree. We took our son and two of his friends for his 9th birthday. In addition to the few intense scenes, they thought it was long and boring. My husband and I enjoyed it more than they did. My 5 year old is also scared of Coraline - and she's a very adventurous girl!

Where the Wild Things Are

Awful movie. Not what I expected at all. I don't think kids would be overly scared of it, just bored to tears. We took my DS opening weekend because he loves the book and I was so disappointed!

Old Yeller. ;) Also, oddly enough, some of the old Shirley Temple movies that are out on video. DD loved 'em as much as I did when I was little and it didn't seem to bother her a bit but as an adult, it freaked me out when Shirley's mother got hit by a bus and they showed it!

:thumbsup2
My ds is the same way. HM was his fave ride at 3!
Anyway, we loved The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Appropriate for kids but very smart and funny for adults, too.

The one movie that comes to my mind is Watership Down. It's an animated movie, but it's not for kids. Even the book isn't exactly for kids.

The later Harry Potter movies might be too dark for some kids. Some people think of them as kids' movies.
