Hi

Can anyone tell me if 'kids meals' in the parks or in orlando are exclusively for kids?
We have a disabled adult(size of a 7 yr old) and 16 yr old DD who eats like a bird, with us, and just wondered if they can order from kids menu.

Thanks

I've sometimes had the kids meal from columbia harbour house, when I've not fancied a full meal never had a problem not sure if its really the 'done' thing tho' have you looked through allearsnet on their menu page to ses if theres any advice?

Just to add that I just looked at allears for you and it didn't really answer your question just concentrated on 'kid friendly' restaurants, I would have thought that any restaurant whether table or counter service would be fine with it tho' Disney get such an influx of disabled guests that I'm sure they'd do their utmost to accomodate your needs

i also eat like a bird and have never had trouble ordering from the kids meals at any CS, including the ones that say 'for kids only' - i suppose in theory they can't make you 'prove' you are ordering for someone under 12.
i have never tried it at a TS though, i think then you would probably be questioned. but then i always just order an appetizer or something small.

My mum often orders from the kids menu or orders just a starter as she doesn't eat much. She explains to the waiter/ess she's not a big eater but I don't think she needs to do this really!

We tip as if she's had a full adult meal though.

Child prices are now under 10 year old and not under 12 :(

I think ordering kids meals for adults depends on restaurant. For buffets and family style restaurants I don't think you can pay child price if you are an adult.

For table service restaurants I think it depends on the restaurant and the server. I have read on the US boards that at some restaurant adults that order from the childs menu have to pay double!
I'm sure with your circumstances if you explain to the server they will let you order from the childrens menu :)
You can also split adult meals between two people, if they both want the same item.

This is different from the buffet and you only get the small amount which you pay for. I read somewhere legally you can buy a childs meal and not be a child, but not the buffet meals where you get as much as you can eat. I think it would help if you are ordering some adult meals too.

Good luck and let us know how you get on when you get back. When you go in a big group with a lot of adults and kids too I have always ordered the kids meals for my daughter as age is just a guide and you get a really small amount compared to the usual amount of food.

We have the other problem. I would be happy to order my daughter an adults meal but the other kids want one to and then they argue amongst themselves. You can't win!!!!

Thanks for bringing this conversation up, i was going to ask this myself.

My mum suffers from Bowl problems which is made worse by eating large meals, spicey meals etc. At home here we have local resturants we go to who do my mum a smaller potion of an adults meal and reduce the price, we normally pre-ask this over the phone and most are ok with this.

Instead of asking for a kids meal (For some reason they feel your doing it to get a cheap meal) ask for a smaller potion, most reasturants should give a reduced rate but that depends on the resturant itself, all you can do is try and pre-asking always helps. Also to save any embarasement for some conditions, write it on a card (I.e. what you require) and hand it to the waiter etc.

I have never had a problem ordering from the kids menu - and I'm 28! They usually ask if I'm not hungry enough for a big meal - but if I am starving and just fancy the kids menu more (I'm very fussy) they usually do me a bigger portion and charge me adult price.

I find them much more amenable than UK resturants - and the kids meals are much better too!

I think it depends on the restaurant AND your server.

We were encouraged to order a childs dessert at the Rainforest one year as we were very full. When it turned up (we shared) it was HUGE, no way was it a kids portion, but thats what we were charged for!!

However, I have also read on the US boards that since the dining age at Disney has been lowered, many on property restaurants are taking a harder line with "adults" ordering a chillds meal - and charging double for them!

I think the best tactic is to ask for a smaller portion of an adult entree. They may well reduce the cost...I am positive most off site places would if the situation was explained. They can also "split plates" so if you have two light eaters they will happily serve one entree split between two plates.

Its also worth bearing in mind that many restaurants (especially the resort ones) will usually fix something that is not on the menu. So, if your light eaters want a plain simple meal like chicken breast and salad, or a cheese sandwich they will often be able to do that.

I dont think you will find that there is a "one rule" answer to this question. Unfortunately, you are going to have to explain at every establishment. The idea of a printed card is a good one and might be worth doing.

My only point would be your choice, last year & most of the trip before DS had adult meals, not because of the portions but due to the choice! TRhere's only so many times that you can have..fish whales(or a variation),chicken tenders, mac'n' cheese, burger, corn dogs......
