I always love it when people think that if you just give kids a variety of foods that they are not picky. It's nice your kids are like that, but not every kid is. My oldest is not picky, and really prefers adult food. Actually, she prefers food that mommy makes, and doesn't care for anything else, lol. She won't drink anything but whole milk and water. No juice, no soda. Sometimes fresh squeezed lemonade or orange juice. Wow, I must be a fantastic mom! She will choose fresh fruit over cookies! But then we had the boy who has some sort of "something" going on with him (no one is really sure at this point, he has a formal diagnosis of autism, but they don't think he really has autism, but some other nebulous neurological disorder), and he will not eat anything that isn't round. I always thought before I had him, that when kids get hungry enough they will just eat, and if you give them a well rounded healthy diet, they will eat well. But that isn't the case for a lot of kids. Ds will starve himself to the point that he dry heaves and can't sit up because he is so weak. Even with his preferred foods, he will go through stints where he will starve himself. His BMI is dangerously thin, and we have had multiple experts working with him to try to get him to eat like everyone else. Thank the Lord a lot of fruits and veggies are round, so he will eat most of those, but the only meats he eats are chicken nuggets and hot dogs (they're round. We did finally get him to try chicken strips lst year, telling him they were Texas sized chicken nuggets and that's why they are so big. He loves Texas, so now he will eat those). We are always trying really hard to get him to eat other meats, but so far, nothing.
However, ds is the exception, rather than the rule, and his food issues are so severe and pervasive that many doctors and therapists are at a loss. I just hate seeing people with typically developing kids pop on with the judgment that if you were only a good parent, you wouldn't have picky kids. Plenty of good parents have picky kids.
Back on topic, though, I agree the kids meals need more variety. I think it is reasonable to have a hot dog or chicken nugget choice mixed in with other dishes, then you satisfy kids who don't like those foods, like my older dd, and the kids who prefer them. How hard is that?
I also wish they offered a junior meal plan for kids who are between maybe 7 and 10. My dd is about to hit her pre-pubescent growth spurt, and holy cow, that girl can eat!! I made chicken primavera last night, and she ate as much as I did! And she is a really thin girl, too, so she is definitely not eating too much, lol. I upgraded her to a Disney adult for our next trip because she loves pasta meals, steak, salads, and so on, and the kids meals won't do it. And the size won't be enough, either.
Blame the parents and the children for such a lousy selection, not Disney.
My restaurant tried to add a larger selection for children and 90% of the time if it wasnt nuggets, a burger, or noodles it was sent back because the child didnt like it. This resulted in the kids being unhappy, then the parents unhappy since they had to wait for a new menu item to be cooked, and then the restaurant isnt happy, then the guest doesnt want to have to pay for the item.
So now the restaurant throws the first meal in the trash and doesnt charge for it and then the next meal comes out that the guest doesnt want to pay for since they were " inconvienced " and they couldnt eat with their child.
Now 2 meals have gone out and neither are paid for.
Disney has nipped this one in the bud. Dont blame them at all for their limited selection revolving kids.
This doesn't make any sense, why did the parent order a meal their child doesn't like?
