Kids Kicked out of School for Wearing American Flag Tshirts

So if a kid is not suppose to wear an American Flag shirt on Cinco de Mayo, does that mean that the school didn't say the Pledge of Allegiance that day either!?!?

Or raise the Flag?

If they wanted to wear them as a means of protest, then they should be allowed to do that as well, as long as they were not being disruptive to the school day.
With a 40% Mexican population in the school how could it NOT be disruptive? Would you rather the administration wait for something to happen? Then we would all be talking about how little they did to protect the kids .

Are they not Americans? Why would the American flag make Americans angry?

That is absolutely INSANE. Mexican AMERICANS.... Don't we all pledge allegiance to the same flag? If you don't want to be AMERICAN give up your citizenship and move out of the country.

I think that's the gist of it. If it's a Mexican national holiday but you can't wear the American Flag in the United States because of it....
Does that mean someone who wore an American Flag shirt on St. Patrick's Day would also be banned from wearing it because that is an Irish holiday? (I see someone else already posted this same thought).

I know my kid wouldn't put that much thought into the shirt, he would just grab whatever he had and if it happened to be from Old Navy with the American Flag on it, then that is what he would wear.

They played the National Anthem instead.

However, then going by the same thought of they shouldn't wear the flag, then they shouldn't play the National Anthem either. It falls into the same line of thinking.

Would you rather throw away the first amendment right to free speech because of what might happen?

Regardless of their motives, the clothes were within the dress code of the school. If they did nothing but wear patriotic American clothings, then they did NOTHING wrong and the Asst Principle should be fired!

Why would Mexican-Americans be upset that someone was wearing the American flag? No one I know who immigrated from Mexico (or any other country) would mind. I don't see why anyone would assume that the wearing an American flag would be at all disruptive. :confused3 And if someone did for some reason respond to the shirt in a disruptive manner, well . . . that's their own fault, not the fault of the person wearing the shirt.

I guess they should have flown the Mexican Flag out in front of the school too.

Can't offend the Mexican students, now can we??

The courts have ruled time and time again that students in school have no rights.

So, in an American school, wearing clothes showing an American flag is racist?? :confused3

NO, you know those kids wore those clothes to start a debate. And if you dont see it then theres no talking to you about my opinion.:rolleyes1

Maybe there should be debate.

Cinco de Mayo should be recognized and be celebrated, but it should never, ever trump American patriotism.

When you are born a citizen or take the oath of citizenship, you become an American citizen. Nothing is more important, nothing.

If you are an American Citizen, or are living in this country reaping the benefits of jobs, education and health care, then whatever country was your past is just that - your past.

Nobody wants people to forget where they came from and stop celebrating their heritage. But it cannot come at the expense of asking citizens of this country to pledge allegiance to another country, even for a single day.

To me this was not done because they are patriatic . to me it smells like rascism.

How is it RACISM to wear an American flag. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the failure of the French invasion and it is not even celebrated in Mexico! This is the United States. We should be celebrating our flag.

It is my understanding that we live in the United States of America. Not the United States of Mexico, England, Ireland and so on. It is just sad that we as a nation have become so PC that a kid gets in trouble for wearing a t-shirt to school with an American flag on the front.

You're probably right. I'm guessing these "patriotic" youth decided to get their boxers in a bunch over the day and picked the flag t-shirts as their protest. I'm sure they have been inspired by the debate regarding the Arizona immigration law and protests. This was their little counter-speech.

Dismissing the students was the wrong approach, though. It only emboldened the little twerps.

You mean the Arizona law that mirrors the unenforced, ignored federal law?

While it certainly is possible that the boys wore their US flag shirts as some sort of statement about the Arizona immigration law, that is their right. That doesn't necessarily mean their actions were incendiary - they may not have had any intent other than to make a quiet statement. Given the current climate regarding the immigration issue, one could just as easily argue that perhaps the Mexican-American students were the ones being incendiary. The report I read said that hundreds of the Mexican-American students were sporting the colors of the Mexican flag, had the Mexican flag painted on their faces, etc. Without being there, we can't know if they did this just because it was Cinco de Mayo or if they were, shall we say, "more enthusiastic" than usual about the holiday as a means of protesting the Arizona law. It could go either way.

Silly, naive me. And I thought that all of those who enter our country legally and illegally want to become American citizens. I didn't realize that they wanted to bring Mexico here. :confused3

It's a sad day when Americans are reprimanded for wearing shirts with their own flag on it. What the hell is going on in this country? :guilty:

Sadly we know the answer to that. :sad2:
