Jajone, it was pretty easy. I ended up getting some pinking shears (cheap JoAnn ones with a 40% coupon) after I was done and going back over the seams with it. Also try and get thin interfacing. The stuff I got was kind of thick but, I was in a hurry when I got it and wasn't thinking. Next time I will get the thinest I can find. Otherwise it is easy to sew. I am a beginner too. I did not do the snap crotch but, you may want to at his age.

My Ds was wearing 18 mos at 1 year too. I would say if your Ds is usually in the larger percentile height wise you will be fine. If it ends up being a little big you could always take it in a little. My Ds is 21 mos now and the size 4 fits him perfectly he is always in the 98-99% on height.

I think I would make a mess of the snap crotch. I thought about skipping the buttons on the top as well and just putting velcro and a button for looks. It looks easy to get on and off without the snaps.

Just a thought for those wanting to do the snap crotch-you can buy pre made snap tape at fabric stores and just stich it on.

After I made my DD a pillowcase dress over Memorial Day weekend, my DS (almost 7) said "Hey, what are you going to make for me?" So this weekend I made him some pajama pants.

He picked out the fabric and is very excited about them. Here's a pic.

Now... onward and upward! What should my next project be?!

Someone asked(sorry I can't remember who as it was pages ago) for the twirl skirt directions. I added the bandanna skirt too. These were found on sew whats new . com

Twirl skirt directions:

Measure your child’s waist. Example 20"


*Decide how long you'd like the skirt to be: ie: 15"


*Decide how many tiers you would like: 3


*Divide your length by the tiers and add seam allowances:

15 divided by 3 = 5.

Example:

If using 5/8 seam allowance, add seam allowances of 5/8" remembering that the top piece you will need to add enough to allow for a casing for the elastic size you choose + the 5/8", so 5+ 5/8 + 1"= 6 and 5/8". On the middle piece it will be 5/8" on both top and bottom so you add 1 1/4". On the bottom, allow for whatever hem you like to do, I like to add 5/8" and do a narrow hem, so I've added 1 1/4.


*You will be cutting and/or piecing fabric into strips that are 1 1/2-2 times the width of the strip above it.

Example:

Waist size 20", top tier is 30-40" wide

Middle tier is 45-80"

Bottom tier is 67-120"

I usually round up my numbers depending on the fabric. You can add seam allowance to this too.


*I usually make the skirt starting at the bottom/longest strip. It seems to be easier than starting at the top. Sew the strip ends together right sides tog. Mark the quarter marks to help ensure even gathering. Gather the top edge (I zig zag over dental floss to make the gathers). Then sew to the next strip right sides together, press, trim, and finish the edge. You can top stitch if you want. Repeat with each strip adding it to the top of the previous one.


*Make a casing at the top/waist for your elastic by finishing the raw edge and folding over and stitching, or press the raw edge under and edgestitch leaving an opening to insert your elastic.


*Cut elastic to fit comfortably around waist, insert into casing and close the opening. Adjust fullness on the elastic.


If you want to add this skirt to a t-shirt then don't make the casing and don't allow extra for the elastic, just the regular seam allowance. Just attach it to the t-shirt as you did each strip right sides together using a ballpoint needle.


Bandana skirt

Make Your Own Bandana Dress/Skirt
This dress or skirt fits any toddler. It sounds easy enough that you could make several for that special little girl.

First, take two bandanas (I bought some from Michael’s) and place them one on top of the other and line them up as best you can.


Then you will fold them on the diagonal, and then fold on the diagonal again. You should have a small triangle.


After that calculate the waist size. I take half of Clara’s waist, then divide that by two. Once I have that number, I follow down the top point of the bandanas (the folded point) until I reach that number on the measurement across. Once there, I cut across the pointed portions in a semi circle.


(Of course this time, I cut too straight and made it somewhat square. If you also do this, just trim it out once it is opened for the waist of the dress, or the elastic of the waistband).


Open the bandanas and you will have a circle in the center.


Turn one of the bandanas caddiecorner to the other and you will have 8 points for the skirt.


At this point, you can attach it to a shirt and finish the seam, or hem the waist and make a casing for elastic (follow other directions for twirl skirt). Since I use store bought bandanas, I do not do any other hemming.


When attaching to the tank, I do stretch the shirt out to match the hole in the bandana to get a nice ruffle effect.

I have to share. I have spent the past 12 days appliqueing (sp?) these Wiggles on the pants. Finally, I'm done, and I can sew the pants together. Keep in mind that I have twins so I appliqued 10 of the Wiggles guys. There will be ruffles on the ankles in the same fabric as the music notes.

I've already done one shirt with the Wiggles logo - all appliqued and stitched. I would post a pic, but the shirt is at my mom's house for her to do the zipper. Zippers are my nemesis. I'll be starting on appliqueing the second shirt as soon as I get the pants finished.

I got the Wiggles from searching custom Wiggles outfits on ebay. I figured it would be ok to use her stuff as inspiration since I'm not selling the outfits. . . EVER! Like I said earlier, I could sell an outfit for $1,000 and still feel like it wasn't worth the money. I've been working daily for 3 weeks now, and I'm still a few weeks away from being done.

ETA: I think it is the camera angle that has the Wiggles looking a bit on the angry side.

Oh my, those are great. I can understand what you're saying about all the time you've spent doing them. I can't wait to see the finished product. BTW, I have a hard time with zippers, too. I am getting better though.

Yup, I made the hair bow too I posted a close up pic a few pages back. I am so not artistic that I am really impressed with myself.I'll never be as good as some of the ladies on here, but I'm just glad I made something that doesn't look half bad

Pixiedust -- Your outfit turned out adorable. I love the bow, too. I saw your post about the bow a few pages back, but I didn't "get" the scale. I thought it was a small bow. It looks absolutely adorable on your DD though.

Hey thanks everybody for answering my questions about the sergers & finishing seams. I haven't been able to use pinking shears because my baby can get horrible exema & it leaves too rough a surface for her sensitive skin.


So the ever-trusty zig-zag stitch tends to be the favored preferance? Does anybody have an "overlock" stitch on their machine that they put to use? I was wondering if it's more or less practical or about the same as the zig-zag for different finsihing applications? Does it lay nicely around curved edges? I've done french seams on pant legs and that works really well. It doesn't seem to do the job however for curves (without puckering) or with added embellishments on the seam (such as ruffles etc.).

Hey, for the hairbow people. For baby fine hair, try "lining" an aligator clip with grosgrain ribbon. You simply use a hot glue gun to line the entire surface, including the pinch part with grossgrain ribbon that's same width as your clip. Make sure both ends of the grossgrain are on the inside of the aligator clip with the ends glued down near the pincher. This method holds really well--even in baby fine hair and opens up more possibilities for bows than a traditional snap clip. Hope this helps! And for little ones with a little (or alot) of fringe on top, don't forget that knit headbands are a cinch to make and open up a world of possibilties of bows for your little one.

Half bad?!?! Nonsense!!! It looks great. I've been putting off starting my 7 yos ribbon shirt, and I know I just have to do it. For the ribbon shirts, do you use interfacing for the ribbons, too, or just the Mickey head?

I commented on the bow when you posted but I didn't realize that it was the same one. I too thought the bow was smaller in the picture by itself.

Also, another thing you can do for a little girl that has no hair or has some but not enough for a bow is dab a little toothpaste on a small bow and stick it on! We had to do this for quite a while when Parker's hair fell out!!!
