Hello All,
I've been peeking in on this board for a while and have been extremely impressed with everyone's work! I am a beginner sewer, but I would like to invest in an embroidery machine before the New Year. I was hoping you guys might have some advice on what brand/machine would be the best to get.

I just want it to do basic embroidery, mostly for names, initials, etc. I have an inexpensive Singer sewing machine now, and I don't know whether to do a new sewing/embroidery combo machine or just get an inexpensive embroidery machine. Any thoughts from you guys would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I'm probably not the one to ask since I've not actually purchased one yet. BUT, for what it's worth, I'll share what I've learned in my research. There is a Singer Futura machine that has a hoop that is just under 5x7. I've seen it many places for $529. All of the reviews that I've read sound like it's a great machine. There is also a Brother 270D that has a 4x4 hoop. I've read lots of mixed feviews. I think there are several here that have the machine and enjoy it. I think that machine is right around $400 new. For me, the drawback is that I don't wan't to upgrade in 6 months, so I know that I want larger than 4x4. From there, it seems that the next price point is about $800 for a 5x7 hoop (that is the Brother 700 we've been talking about). Of course, then you can go up from there by thousands of dollars. I've not done much research in that area, because it is very much out of my price range.

I have to ask all those that got the new sewing machines & sewed on older ones.....is it really that different? Is it worth the expense? I sew on a 1960s Singer that Dh bought at a swap meet several years ago. It works great.;) I have no complaints, honestly.

When I feel a little tired of the Singer, I sew on my Mom's Brother (1990s model). When she went to heaven, my sisters gave her machine to me-they have no clue about sewing. The Brother has more problems for me than the older Singer.:confused3

After hearing about all the new fangled machines here & watching HSN at some Christmas specials...it's got me a little green with envy. One day I watched a lady in the machine section at JoAnn's sewing on one of those Swedish(?) models. She was applique stitching, get this...drinking a cup of coffee, while the machine did the work!!!! :cloud9: Can you imagine? I don't think I'd enjoy sewing as much, with out all the sweat equity. :rotfl: I'd have to go into business or something to justify it all to myself.

If your old Singer works for you and you're comfortable with it, I'd stick with it. The only reason I got a new one was because my 1950's Singer was getting sick and it's a good thing because it died yesterday! May she rest in peace! I'm over it, I have a new one!

I forgot to tell y'all what my son did. He called yesterday and asked what I was doing. When I told him I was playing with my new sewing machine, he got upset and said "that's great!" He then told me that he had ordered the Disney Brother SE270D from Walmart.com and was waiting for in to be restocked for shipment. I was speechless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First of all, I can't believe he would think of spending that kind of money on me, he's a hard worker and I try to encourage saving everything he can, plus he has two kids! He works really long hours especially around Christmas and I guess he had tons of overtime and really wanted to do something nice for me.

Now, I feel like a heel for asking him not to do it. It's something he really wanted to do because he knew how badly I wanted that one, and he finally had the extra money to do something nice for me. I called him today and told him that if he really wanted to do it, then go ahead and I would appreciate and cherish every minute of using it because of him. But, I also told him that if he needed to save the money, that was ok too. I am so thankful that he is so sweet and loves his mother and I hope I didn't hurt his feelings!

It sounds like everyone had a great Christmas! I love all of the new outfits that were posted...great job!

I was stunned over the doggie horror stories...how rude people can be :headache: I am a dog person and have 8 dogs. It would NEVER occur to me to ask to bring any of them along on a visit to someone's home, much less without permission

DH did get me a Disney Brother sewing/embroidery machine  He is almost as excited as I am about it!

I feel so lucky that he loves the idea of matching WDW outfits for us  This from the guy who after several years of dragging him to WDW for my B-day (New Year's Day when it is super crowded of course) and doing parks commando style for three days straight finally said, No more WDW for him :scared1: So we did not go for several years :guilty: Finally a fellow DISer talked him into going again and promised to keep things at an easy pace with time for naps too :thumbsup2

Now we go several times a year and even became DVC members :goodvibes So a BIG THANK YOU to ALL of the DIS'ers that I have learned SO much from. Thanks to all of you I am learning a new skill (at almost 39 yo) and DH and I have an obsession we can share together. (I always knew there was no way I'd get him into showing dogs  ) You guys ROCK and I appreciate this wonderful community :grouphug:

BTW, thought I'd share a picture of something else one of my four legged kids gave me for Christmas. They are just a few hours old in the picture.

Okay all of you ycmt.com fans, I have a question! I love the tess rouched and ruffled skirt and the bowznstuff triple layer twirl, but can't decide which one to try.:confused3 Has anyone used either of these patterns, and if so, which did you like or was easiest? I am still new to this sewing thing, so I wouldn't want a difficult pattern. Any help would really be appreciated!:flower3: TIA!

Hiya All....I haven't been online much this month because my Christmas gift came early this year.....a beautiful baby boy!!! He was three weeks old yesterday!!!! He truly is the best Christmas gift we have ever been blessed with!!!!

Maybe I can get caught up on this thread during midnight feedings!! LOL

OH Hooray!! Welcome to the new little one! I hope you are feeling well and getting as much rest as possible.

T - I'm really glad you got to have a good Christmas.
Thank you so much. It really was a good Christmas and we are exited to bring in the new year. It can only get better.

I just had to post because with this post, my 419th post in this thread, I just edged out UtahMama :crowded: for the #10 spot!! WOO-HOO!!
Yay for heather. You ARE popular, see that! I don't even want to know how dismal my #'s look...

Hello my name is Cindee and I am TERRIBLE when it comes to getting film developed. (Seriously I have undeveloped film from 15 years ago:sad2: )

Soooooo I was GOOD today, I found 2 rolls of film in a drawer and went and got them developed. They were from CHINA!!!!!!!! (2.5 years old) I have more pictures of my baby as a baby (ok well younger LOL). My DD told me Santa must have brought them :goodvibes

Cindee
What an exciting find!! It's like a burried treasure Cindee!!!
These were my Christmas day creations for Ds(6), Ds(3) & Dn(1)....

My niece truly looked like a little doll in her corker & ruffles. I kept staring at her crawling around & smiling, I felt so accomplished. (Thanks for all the inspiration Dis sistas!;) )I'm pleased at how it worked out, but not sure if my sisters liked it.:

I LOVE these outfits. Your appliques are great and your DN is adorable. Your sisters are lucky to have you to make beautiful things. I'm glad the party went well, the cuties dress was cute too. You did a fantastic job!!

Thank you ALL for the wonderful sweet comments!!! We are growing our family through adoption but this is what is called a legal-risk adoption. The parental rights have not yet been terminated but Social Services believes they will be and therefore placed the baby in a fost-adopt family verses just with a foster family. We need all the prayers we can get because we fell in love with this little guy the moment we picked him up from the hospital. Who wouldn't??? We could not bare it if we lost him. I truly believe our hearts would be broken, including our little girls. She does love him like crazy and is always wanting to help. We truly hope the parental rights will be terminated due to the fact the birth parents are being charged with felony child abuse - resulting in death of a little baby they had last year. For right now we are going to care for and love this little guy as much as we can and pray that we can adopt him!!

Thanks again for the sweet comments.
I will be thinking of you.
Sandmen.jpg

The girls finishing their bead strings at AKL. You can't tell in the picture very well, but that fabric is "sandmen" on the beach, instead of snowmen. Nana thought that it was quite appropriate, since we live in FL.

nana's creations are beautiful as always but I especially like the sandmen... I'm always annoyed when people say "how do you get in the Christmas spirit w/out snow?? It just doesn't feel like Christmas" Because when you've spent every christmas of your life on the beach then this is EXACTLY what Christmas feels like!!!

Heather- What a GREAT Christmas present!!! Tessa is so thoughtful.

Wow, thanks for sharing the pictures and some of your story! What a wonderful way to have a family!

Congratulations on your 1 year anniversary as a forever family! Those pictures are adorable.

Thank you both so much. I love these 3 kids more than anything. I can not imagine them not being my children. It is sad for me to think there was a time in my life that I didn’t think there was anything as good as having a biological child. I now know there was a reason God made me unable to conceive. It was to parent these 4 wonderful and beautiful children. I will have to share my adoption story sometime. I think you will all love how I "tricked" my husband into Katie :) Tricked is not the right work… I just called him and said come home I have to go pick something up :rotfl:

s

Well, we got in the car and headed to Walmarshay, and picked up some flannel and a couple of $1.00 clearance tshirts. They picked out the fabric and I literally whipped these up in about 1 hour! Of course I wasn't as particular with pinning, and measuring and such, but they turned out quite well!

29006.jpg

29012.jpg

Leigh's friend "D" is sad that she doesn't have a pony too!

I love how you just whip things up:) It takes me forever to make things. I also suffer with perfectionist tendencies!

Can you tell me know you attached the tees to the skirt? I have a horrible time with mine stretching. I used a stretch stitch and a walking foot the last time and it was better, but I still had to add a sash to cover all of my inaccuracies. Have I mentioned that I hate turning fabric??? Any helpful pointers would be great. I have seriously thought about buying the YCMT pattern, but I know I can learn it with out spending the money. I am also cheap:)

Ok...I have been looking at all these beautiful outfits that everyone is making for some time. I love to make outfits for my daughter, but I have no idea how you are all doing yours. Could you give me pointers? Where did you get the materials & patterns? Does the material come like that, or are you combining several different designs to make it like that?

I do not know how to post pictures yet, but I have been trying to figure it out, but it just isn't working, or else I would post some stuff I have done.

I would greatly appreciate any advise on the outfits though!

It's been an interesting Christmas. The Friday before I found out one of my girlfriends, who had just found out she has lymphoma, was having severe headaches, they admitted her to the hospital to start her chemo early, it was farther along than they first thought. She's holding her own right now and fighting hard.

The Sunday before someone hit my truck. We're all okay, we were going really slow but the truck has to go in for work starting next week. At least it wasn't my fault and we were going slow. We have the same insurance company too so that's making it a little easier. Now I have a reason to clean out my truck, it's a disaster. :)
I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I'll pray that the chemo works and she regains her health.
I'm glad your okay after the accident. That's always a scary thing!

BAD DOG! Bad Owner! ...
Good Heather!
Actually, It sounds like you & your hubby were as nice about it as you possibly could be, about the whole entire thing!!
Don't feel bad about it ... !
LOL! Thank you, the more I think about it, the more I think we were TOO nice!
Cute pictures, as usual! I love the one of Matthew pointing at his stocking and Emily hugging her pants! Too sweet!

Thanks Laura! It looks like there are a lot of good links on there. I'll add it to the bookmarks if Teresa hasn't already!

Heathersue- I used Casa satin. It is so much nicer than some of the other satin's and holds up much better. It is about $7 a yard, but of course I used a JoAnns 50% off coupon ;)
Thank you!!! Was it hard to work with? Tessa's halloween costume was a thin satin and velour and it was SOOO slippery to work with.

I loved the link to your other pictures. It's so cool to see your girls riding on "our" carousel! Tessa was excited to see them.

I haven't posted here in a while but I was told several of you have Butterscotch (the horse) for your children. I'd like to know if they love it? Do they get tired of it?

thanks!

Oh, BTW... my little Gracie is doing great but she is starting to outgrow some of her customs.:sad2: so now I have to sell some and buy new ones:rolleyes1 . I have a couple in the works for a quick trip in March. We will be going to the Perfectly Princess Tea Party so, of course, that means an Aurora custom and something special planned for 1900 Park Fair.

th_DSC_1034.jpg
There's that little cutie! We've missed you around these parts! My Dad bought the grandkids Butterscotch to play with at his house. Tessa LOVES her! The novelty wore off after a few days, but she still plays with her whenever we go over there. She (I can't call her "it") really is a neat pony- even for grown-ups! ;)

Deann-Congrats on the great deal on your new sewing machine!! My old Singer is still hanging in there. But, if I found a deal like that, I'd snatch it up!
I also want to point out that you're violating the 3 banana rule in your siggy. What a disgrace!! ;)

Is it better now?

Princess Grace is BEAUTIFUL as usual and so is your outfit coordination (as usual!) I'm sure you're having a great time picking new customs and planning for another trip! We are definitely doing some character meals next time.

What a fabulous Dad you are Tom. You know how I feel about ya'll just "whipping" stuff up, but it was really great of you to do this for the girls. I think we should all have a slumber party at Tom's...how do you think DW would feel if we all showed up in our pj's one night???:rotfl:

Congratulations Deann and Mindy on your new machines. Have fun creating wonderful things.

Working full time on my feet is just killing me. I have been absolutely EXHAUSTED!!!not that I'm complaining about having work but I am surprised how much I physically feel the difference between PT office work and being on my feet 45 hours a week. Also I got 1 day off last week (christmas) and am not off again until Tue. But ya gotta do whatcha gotta do and until B is back to work and we are caught up I'll do what I have to to try to keep us going.

Happy New Year to everyone.
...t.

Whoohoo! Cinderella is done! I just need to do the jeans (and maybe a peasant top) and then I'll post pictures!! Emily loves it!! She is currently twirling in it. She kissed it when I showed it to her. I finished it during nap. She said (with a voice full of wonder!!) "You made that while I was sleeping?!" I should have the jeans done tonight.

WOW!! GORGEOUS!!!!!

What a couple of beautiful girls!! Very cute nightgowns. What a great dad you are!

Funny story, Tessa was telling Lydia today that our kitty, was naughty. Lydia asked her why she thought that, and Tessa said, "Because when Grandma was watching him (while we were in Florida) he jumped up on her ceiling!" What had happened was that Heather's dog had barked at our cat, and apparently, he lept straight up into the air and was hanging onto the door frame!!! Which is really weird, because at the time we had a Brittany Spaniel that he hardly gave a second look to, and Heather's dog is a little schnauzer!
It was the funniest thing I've ever seen! My dog barked, the cat jumped straight up and his front claws were stuck in the trim over the door. It was HILARIOUS!!!

After hearing about all the new fangled machines here & watching HSN at some Christmas specials...it's got me a little green with envy. While drinking a cup of coffee?? I'm thinking I need one of those machines!!

HEY TERESA! How was enchanted? My 4 year old wants to see it but I didn't know if it would hold her attention. How did you guys like it?
I'll answer for Teresa and say that Enchanted was GREAT!!! We all loved it. Tessa's 4 and she sat through the whole movie, mesmerized. It was really cute for kids and adults alike. Giselle, the princess in the movie is a seamstress, too!

What a sweet thing for him to do!!!
Thanks for giving that banana someone to dance with, too.

Tessa just spent the last 10 minutes ooh-ing and aww-ing over your puppies. They are so precious!!

Yay for heather. You ARE popular, see that! I don't even want to know how dismal my #'s look...
Not popular so much as obnoxiously "talkative".

Thank you both so much. I love these 3 kids more than anything. I can not imagine them not being my children. You MUST share this story! I want to hear all of your adoption stories, for that matter. I've always felt like I wanted to adopt, but DH thinks 2 is enough. Being the 3rd child in my family, I disagree!

Ok...I have been looking at all these beautiful outfits that everyone is making for some time. I love to make outfits for my daughter, but I have no idea how you are all doing yours. Is there a specific outfit you had in mind? There are lots of helpful links in the sewing links in my siggy. A lot of the outfits on here are made from patterns bought on youcanmakethis.com. There are also lots of them made from regular Simplicity, McCalls patterns, etc... I buy most of my fabric at WalMart or JoAnn. Lots of us make "stripwork" jumpers and skirts. This is where we've taken 2 or more different fabrics, cut it in strips, and sew the strips together. There are instructions in the links in my siggy. I hope I helped a little! Feel free to ask all the questions you want!

It sounds like everyone had a great Christmas! I love all of the new outfits that were posted...great job!

momnpups.jpg

OHHHH! I love Golden Retrievers! I have 2, a boy named "Clifford the Big Red Dog" and a girl named "Amber". They aren't as perfect as the show specimen in your siggie picture...but they are fabulous pets! I swear, they are so great with kids! NEVER aggressive...except one time we had this gas meter reader that must have been a truly bad guy because my dogs went all NUTS when this particular reader came by our house. NO other meter readers, just him. So I know my wuppies would be able to protect us IF a truly bad guy came to our house.

Your new pups are soooo cute! Look at the proud mama Golden!!!! I love how you color coded them!
What do you feed them to get their coats so glossy? I've started them on Lamb and Rice because they have THE most sensitive digestions. Seems to help.

Be sure and post more pics as they grow! I love goldens at around 5-6 weeks when their at their optimum puppy cuteness...:cutie:

Hey everyone!

I am away on vacation, and checking in from my hotel room right now, but I love the creations everyone is posting.

I have a few of the "coffee drinking" machines. They're awesome. There's a software program you can get where you can program your machine to do the appliques for you. I am not proficient enough yet for anything beyond simple shapes, but it is pretty cool.

When I was looking at the sewingrooms, DH mused wondering how the lady wold react to my sewingroom. the anti-organization sewing room, lol. My next big purchase is going to be lots of clear storage. ANyone know where I can get it in bulk? :lmao:

Keep them coming!! :thumbsup2

Sorry in advance...long post coming.
hello everyone!! I'm sorry to hear everyone is sick. We are all coming down with something as well. I have a sore throat, cough thing, and dd has a cough too. We'll live....:sad2:
Everyone's outfits have been adorable. I'm glad to see all of the lurkers coming out of hiding.
I have decided that we need another week at Disney, so next week we are leaving...jan 3-7th or whenever we decide to come home...we don't have to be home until the 14th...technically.;)
Anywho..we most likely won't be staying on property. I'm tempted to try the Nick hotel, because DD Ireland loves Spongebob. This has been the first year that I allowed her to watch it and she LOVES it!!! I also like the idea of putting the girls in their own room, and having some privacy...;)
I thought Lexie and I would be on our own for this trip, but Ireland will be with us as well, so she needed a gown too. So I have been sewing the past few days, trying to get it finished.
I'm done except putting on the trim around the waist and the closures in the back. I recycled :rotfl: the Belle broach from her old store bought dress and put it on the one I made. Please excuse the hair..she has been running around the house..

295522542.jpg

The bodice is a gorgeous gold brocade. I fell in love with it and had to have it. The skirt is made of two layers. One is a heavy maroon satin, that is lined in black. It's to die for...too bad you can't really see it. The top layer is a sheer maroon that had gold and maroon roping sewn into it. I had to have that as well. It all came to about 60 dollars. All of the material was 19.99 a yard, because it was decorator fabric, but I used coupons, and got some on sale. Ireland is really pleased with it and hopefully it won't be too warm for her. If it's hot that day, we will go to MK in the evening when they have extra magic hours at night.
Did I mention that it's really hard to yell at the kids when you've lost your voice?

That dress is gorgeous.

We went to see Enchanted today. Sort of a trial run for our Florida trip, although there were only 13 of us at the movie (the other two joined us for supper afterwards though), we took up the entire back row of the theater! I loved it!!! Even Brian seemed to enjoy it!I hadn't realized that Giselle was a redhead! Heather and I decided that Lydia really needs Giselle's blue dress! Then, Lydia leaned over and asked me if I could make it for her. So, one more outfit to add to my list!

The girls and I made the beaded tiaras from the bookmarks for all the girls. They turned out pretty cute. I would suggest that if you make them to NOT use the metallic pipe cleaners, those things are a pain! Little bits of tinsel everywhere! We made a few using the regular pipecleaners, and it was a lot easier and much less messy! It was a really fun project for us all to do yesterday afternoon! If I hunt down a camera, I will take a picture. Which reminds me, I haven't got a picture of Lydia's Sulley and Boo jammies yet.

Arminda is spending the night at Brian's brother's tomorrow (with her twin cousin, they were born the same morning), and she may not be up by the time I leave for my meeting in the morning, and Brian is probably picking her up at the New Years party they are having on Monday. Do you know what that means??? I won't see my little girl until NEXT YEAR!!!!

You won't see her until next year :scared1:

I forgot to tell y'all what my son did. He called yesterday and asked what I was doing. When I told him I was playing with my new sewing machine, he got upset and said "that's great!" That's a good son.
