My daughter had her 15mo. check up today and I showed the Dr. a little bulge she has in her tummy a couple inches above her belly button- the Dr. said it is a Peri-something hernia and she will have to have it surgically corrected. Surgical- like they have to cut my baby open- what- wait a minute, that's the only way, it won't close on it's own. She says no but it is not an emaergency and I am given a referal to the pediatric surgeon. We won't see him until next friday. I say should we be concerned, we are leaving for disney in about 2 weeks. She says just make sure you see the surgeon before you go. I am hoping he says it will close on it's own, but not very optimistic that this will be the outcome. My poor little girl I just don't know how to prepare for this, no one I have talked to has even heard of this before so I thought I would bring it to you- Have you heard of this type of hernia?? Any advice, tips, experience will be welcomed. I have been so bummed all evening and I still have so much left to do before we leave(both at work and home), but this just took the wind out of my sails. And I'm going to worry for the next 10 days until we see the surgeon. I know it I might be over reacting a little, but they are talking about putting my baby to sleep and cutting her open to fix her and it is freaking me out. Thank you all for your time. I'll let you all know what happens.
Bless your heart...I get so upset with physicians who rush through explanations and don't understand the impact on the person receiving the information. I am an RN, BSN since Methusala (sp) and have worked in outpatient surgery among many other areas...a hernia, as you probably know, is a weakness in the abdominal muscles that allows the bowel to protrude through...kind of like thinking of a hose that has a bulge in it...the hose isn't stong in that area and the water causes a bulge in it...the procedure is a very simple surgical procedure with a tiny incision and then the baby wears a belly band afterwards to help with healing. The anesthesia they use today is so safe and fast acting, wears off immediately. Little ones don't have a lot of pain, they usually are out of sorts for a day due to the medication and going through something stressful like going to the hospital. I wouldn't worry about the trip to Disney...just see that surgeon to give you peace of mind. Write down your questions before you get in there or you will forget what you wanted to ask in the anxiety of the moment. If you don't understand something...ask. When our surgeons explain a procedure to someone, I go over everything with the family after the surgeon leaves in layman's terms and draw pics etc...in this day and age, any good surgeon will have writtin information for you...such as what to expect, what you will do after the surgery with your child etc. I say ask a nurse when it comes to physicians and their practiced. We are in there and see things first hand and know how patients recover, how physician interact with kids and parents, and who has infection rates, return to surgery rates and things that those outside of the hospital don't. Of course, it is against our practice to recommend someone....but you know what I mean...when someone asks me, I will say, oh, they are great and why...or I might say have you heard of so and so, or my grand just had surgery with so and so....
Nicholas has had lots of hospitalizations and some horrid tests done, including a wire down his tiny nose into his stomach for 24 hours to measure the amount of acide reflux and at the same time oxygen in his nose for a sleep study with both hands tied down on boards...it was awful. He had anesthesia prior to putting the wires down his nose/throat/stomach, and that part was ok. But when he couldn't suck his thumb to self soothe...that did him in. Let me know how your baby does. Hernias are very common...like someone else said...and at a young age, after it is fixed things should be A ok.
Hope that this has helped you. I know it isn't easy to be calm when it is your baby.
Blessings,
Susan (the insomniac)...and I have to get up for work in a few hours...

I have never heard of this type of hernia before. Please keep us updated. We're all thinking of you and your daughter. :grouphug:

My dd11mo was born with one of these in her belly button. It caused her belly button to stick out really far! It looked really bad but it corrected itself and now she is fine! So don't give up hope maybe they will tell you that hers is fine as well! I will keep you and her in my prayers!

My ds had this done when he was about 4 or 5 months old. He was my first baby, and I felt just like you. I was terrified, but supposedly it's very minor. Or that's what they say! Any time you cut open my baby, it's major!!! I'm sure she will be just fine, so please try to have fun on your trip and not think about it too much. We are thinking of you! :grouphug:

My fil and dgm told me to place a silver dollar on it then wrap in guaze and it would go away! Just thought I'd add that bit of folklore!

Ok, currently I have a list of outfits finished with no pics. I will get pics today w/my crummy camera. If they are good enough, I will post. If not, you guys will have to wait until dh gets home! Here's what I have finished:

Leopard Santa decoupage jeans set
Pink/Black Mickey twirl set FINALLY!!!!!!! (this one beat me up twice)
Nemo stripwork jumper
Princess twirl top
Halloween stripwork jumper

I think that's it. I almost have Jasmine finished, I just have to embroider the face and hem that stinkin' spiral skirt!

The word peri means surrounding...a periumbilical hernia may be what was said...an umbilical hernia involves the bellybutton, a periumbilical hernia is next to the bellybutton.

We use the word peri when we document things like periwound skin meaning the skin around the wound and how it appears.

Try not to worry, but see that surgeon to put your mind at ease.
Susan

I know how hard this can be!! At 2 1/2 MONTHS DS developed a hernia (inguinal not your daughters kind, his was VERY uncommon in a baby his age). While in the surgeons office it was also discovered that he had a slight tongue tie. Lets take care of both... Oh and he has an undescended...well you know. They didn't want to fix the undescended part, they wanted to see if that would come down on it's own. We were scheduled for surgery 2 weeks later. The weekend before his surgery at 3 in the morniung I could not get the hernia back in (yeah, it would pop out and I would have to push it back in, not for the squeamish!!) So off to our emergency room (30 minutes away). OF COURSE when we get there the hernia had popped back in on it's own!! On Monday, we were scheduled for the first surgery of the day (Thankully) but no formula after 2am! :scared1: He was weighed, measured and I had to sign my signature on his left leg - so they operated on the correct side!! They took him back to the surgery room to do all the prep work. That was the hardest - watching the nurses carry him down the hall to the restricted area. The surgery only lasted 40 minutes, and recovery was an hour. He slept alot that day - but at 2 1/2 months he always slept alot. He did not seem to be in pain, was onlt given tylenol once home.

When he was 7 months old the other side developed a hernia too. This time he was scheduled a little later in the morning, and the surgery was a little longer, because they also fixed his undescended...part. He came out of recovery great, and again didn't seem to have any pain. He did sllep alot that day - the nurses said to expect that, a side effect of the anestesia.

Your surgery will be a little different, because your child is older. While we were there both times, there were at least 2 older children (under 4) having hernia surgery as well. I think it is more common than we think. Make sure you are comfortable with your surgeon, and good luck. You'll be in my prayers.

These skirts look FANTASTIC! Great job and your girls are gorgeous!

here is a better pic of the bows

Great bows! Love them!

Here are my Jack Skellington shirts I appliqued a couple of weeks ago for DS4 (Yikes! that's the last time I'll every type that! DS turns 5 tomorrow!), DS8, and DH. My bobbin case broke in the middle of it all and I had to wait to finish them. Anyhow, while not complicated they were a bit of a challenge. Jack's supposed to look like sloppy stitching though, right? I can't complain though. Total cost was $2 each!

Shirts look GREAT! And for $2? You can't beat that!

You know both my brother and I had tubes and I never even thought of how my Mom felt about it until you (teresajoy) mentioned it. I bet it freaked her out too. I think it is that part (the putting her out part) that is freaking me out the most right now, then there is the actual cutting part and the what if they leave something inside her part- I think I've seen to many of those hospital shows on discovery channel. Why do we watch those any way don't we have enough to worry about??? Then the healing part- she is so active and busy. I know she will be in pain which is going to break all our hearts seeing her hurting. And of course the anticipation of it all................TIA everyone.

I know how scary it is to have to let them put your child under anesthesia. My dd10 has had to go under many times for medical tests. I know that I have always felt much more secure at our children's hospital than at a regular hospital. There were just a few times that we ended up at the regular hospital that I noticed her being treated like a small adult instead of a child. Things are different for children and I think it is important for the people working on my child to be specialists.

As far as the pain goes, I think you'll be surprised at how quickly your dd will heal. I was so worried about Riley after her surgery (removal of a 4 pound tumor and most of her liver at 7 weeks) and the nurses and doctors explained how pain works to me. Apparently as adults we are a bunch of big babies and things hurt us worse because we "know" they hurt. Your dd won't be expecting pain so she will feel much less. They showed me a little girl who had open heart surgery that morning and was sitting up. I guess when an adult has the same procedure it is at least 5 days before they even sit up!

Riley was practically cut in half under her ribs and I was scared to death to pick her up because I didn't want to hurt her. The nurse plopped her in my arms and everything was fine. You'll have my prayers because I know how scary it is, but I hope you won't worry too much!

I just wanted to thank luv2go2disney for your generosity! I really appreciate your kindness! And thanks to teresajoy for your thoughtfullness as well! Everyone on this thread is SOOOOO NICE! I LOVE YOU GUYS:grouphug:

Thanks for following the rules! ;) I love seeing pictures of your girls, they are just precious!! I love the Minnie twirl skirts. VERY cute!

What really made me post today is that the minnie dot fabric, sent by the very generous HeatherSue:love: , arrived today. Now, I need to get those overalls done.

And, HeatherSue and TeresaJoyce (see, I am paying attention), I came across this quote while looking for some scrapbooking inspiration and immediately thought of you two. . . "The Lord made us sisters because He knew we would love each other too much to just be friends."
Yay! It finally got there! It came back for lack of a stamp the first time I tried to send it out. I think the ladies at the post office are weighting the scales. :scratchin: Thanks for that wonderful quote! It is perfect for us!!
On the overalls, I don't know if this is helpful, but it almost looks like there's elastic around the skirt part of those overalls. Maybe they're not actually sewn on all the way around. :confused3

Ha ha, yes they do :rolleyes1 I include all photos, including such things as boys with bows on their heads and ladies in 80s hairdos and prom dresses :rotfl2:

(Disclaimer: That is all except those that members have specifically asked me not to include their's :surfweb: of course)
Oooh....you're positively evil! :lmao: Now I definitely won't post any super low rise jean muffin top pictures. Because, you know, I was definitely going to post them before. :rolleyes1

PPFFFFTTT!!! That's me spitting my water all over after reading your post!! I'm just wondering what he thought might be going on in there, and how he could help! :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:
If he had the "real" jeans instead of these practical joke type ones, that may have been helpful.

Disneymommieof2 - I have no advice - I just wanted to let you know that I will be praying for your precious little one, as well as you in the days to come.

Ok, here are pics. They aren't great, but it's the best I can do for now.

This is for dgd to wear to Epcot. You might remember the twirl skirt I made for dd2, this goes with that.

This is also for dgd, I need to make hairbows so I can mail it to her. This is made from leftover fabrics from the girls patchwork skirts. I bought some pumpkin buttons to use for a Cinderella outfit, and they looked perfect on this!

This is the pink/black Mickey skirt that I tried and failed twice! I didn't want a full-on twirl skirt, but that's what I had to do in the end to make it work. She didn't like the top I made cuz it covers too much of the skirt! It's just a black T with a Mickey made of the dots fabric. I'm gonna try to shorten it later.

This is like a tshirt dress, only it's shorter. It's a twirly top!

 You poor Mommy. My friend's son had this done when he was a baby and he came through it just fine. As I recall, his was up higher, too. It's been 15 years and he is still as healthy as can be. I can imagine how scary it must be for you, though.

I had a pair of the ultra low rise jeans that were my favorites before children but two kids later, NO WAY! They are still in the closet though, maybe I should try them on and take a picture to post just for laughs. It can't be worse than the 80's hair and prom pictures can it? Just joking, there is way in _ _ _ _ I would ever take a picture of that and show it in public! I totally agree, God did not intend for slightly fluffy women to wear things like that. I do wonder who keeps making them though. Twisted sense of humor!
Nope, now that you said it, you MUST post the picture before you can post anything else. popcorn::

Okay Spongie, that's it! Don't you know that you're supposed to hang on every word that is posted in this thread- commenting after each adorable outfit, totally ignoring your children and household duties (or work, or whatever)?

My fil and dgm told me to place a silver dollar on it then wrap in guaze and it would go away! Just thought I'd add that bit of folklore!
Hey, would that work for zits?

They're all great! I especially love that Jasmine outfit!!!! The fabrics you used are very original! Don't be skerred of the hem. I did it and it turned out all right. It just took me forever. Teresa's went smoother with the rolled hem foot, though. Love the Santa decoupage jeans. Rock star Santa!! :rockband:

Thanks! As soon as I saw that fabric, I thought it had a Moroccan style and Jasmine came to mind! It's not a friendly fabric, but it looks pretty! Those pictures aren't even good, wait til I get some with the good camera!

Because everyone is showing off bows and talking about them I thought I would show you some of ours

TNmom_ The outfits are FANTASTIC! How did you get all that work done?:confused3 I especially like the Jasmine! Great choice of fabric!
