Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes Part 4

After discussing t-shirt dresses and nightgowns on this thread earlier today, I decided to give it a shot. I'd made a tee and leggings last week with the intention of adding a patchwork skirt of cotton woven but once I put the patchwork with the knit, I just didn't like the combination. The patchwork became a skirt for Zoe and the half tee and leggings were put aside. After getting the idea to make a nightgown t-shirt dress, I looked through my flannel and found one that looks like it was meant to be paired with the knit I used for the tee and leggings. I'm not totally satisfied with the rippling where the knit and flannel are seamed but it's not bad and should be warm and cozy... a definite plus for PJs. :-)

What a great idea. You guys are full of them! I love flannel so I'll have to try some Christmas nightgowns maybe. :santa:

HI Everyone,

I've been reading about " topstitching" on the twirl skirts - what is that, and how do you do it?

THanks!!

Hi Everyone,

Well, here is my try at a patchwork twirl skirt - im sewing while DH is watching the NASCAR race! He keeps making me stop so he can hear better! lol!!! Anyway, any tips are appreciated!! Thanks, wendy

Very cute! I made a very similar patchwork twirl skirt for DD2. Love yours!

OK , now I can come back to the thread...that Green Bay game was INTENSE! seriously!

It's rib knit I got at JoAnns. I think it's 96% cotton and 4% spandex. I know it was in the clearance section which is why I only had enough for a short top if I made leggings, too. Our local store doesn't have a big selection of knits overall but they have a decent assortment of colors in rib knit. I took a short online "workshop" for sewing knit tops and bought several colors when JA had their clearance fabric 50% off. I love the look of leggings with skirts and tunic tops but can't always find the color I want already made so I'm trying to make them myself using a pair of Zoe's as a pattern. One of the patterns I'm anxious to try in the Ottobre magazine is for leggings because then I'll be able to make other sizes more easily. I want to try making some in the fabric called panne - a kind of stretch "crushed velvet". I know JA carries that and some Walmarts do as well.

What kind of thread do you use when working with knits? I am guessing there has to be some "give" to the thread.

Okay, get ready for lots of (large) pictures! This week I made these skirts for DDs. They are the YCMT double layer twirl skirt. They were actually very easy. I sort of had to wing it on DDs because she is a size 10 but the pattern was not difficult--no pattern pieces to print or tape, just lots of math. In hindsight I may have made the stripwork layer a little longer, but overall I'm happy with how they turned out. I made one for DD2 and DD10 said "I want one!" so I just made hers a little less full (actually other than the dropwaist panel the skirts are the same width.) I am very fortunate to have a DD10 that still loves the girly "frou-frou" stuff. In fact, my Dniece, who is a very stylish and beautiful 19-year-old saw the skirts today and said she wanted me to make one for her too :rotfl: I just tried to make DD10s a little older with her boots and jacket.

The Minnie shoes that she won't really get to wear with this outfit because they are about 2 sizes too big but I had to buy them anyway because they were only $8 at Disney shopping.com (hard to find, somewhere in costume accessories). But hey, it's an excuse to plan another Disney trip when they do fit!

And finally, after much practice, appliqueing is actually getting easier! Not that I'm good at it but I'm just thrilled that I'm getting better. I've finally figured out that it works much better to go SLOW! I do still get a little fabric fray on the edges where I get a little close with the outside edge of my stitch.

HI Everyone,

I've been reading about " topstitching" on the twirl skirts - what is that, and how do you do it?

THanks!!

I'm sure someone else could explain this better than me - but I'll give it a try. After you sew a row together you stitch the seam allowance down by top stitching near where the fabric meets.

Here are two descriptions that I coppied and pasted from sewing sites:
"Topstitching is an extra line of stitching sewn on the right side of the fabric that parallels a seamline or is used to sew a hem. Topstitching is usually visible on a project, so it needs to look good."
Adding a top stitch gives a finished look to your seam and adds a bit of strength. The top stitch is sewn on top of a primary straight stitch, sewing through the top of the fabric and the seam allowances underneath.

"To sew the top stitch, lay open the previously sewn fabrics with right sides up and the seam allowance underneath. Fold the seam allowance (underneath) to the side where you intend to top stitch. You will sew through the top fabric and through both fabrics' seam allowance underneath to hold the seam allowances flat. Sew as you would a straight stitch, with the top stitch seam about 1/8 to 1/4 inch from the straight stitch seam."

I topstitch all kinds of seams - I like the way the fabric lays after. I do it on tiered tops, ruffles, patchwork skirts, etc. I think you can see it in the skirt photo below. The stitching above the pink ruffle - the top yolk is also topstitched above where the stripwork panel meets the yolk. Does that help any????

Your daughters look great in their skirts! Nice job!!! I love those Minnie shoes! Great job on your applique!

I am not sure if it has already been posted but I came across another thread and saw than one of our fellow sewers, AKsunshine was in a car accident and lost her young son Levi.:grouphug:

That is so horrible. She and her family will be in our prayers.

Alright here is the double layer twirl skirt that I made to match the lime green mickey head tee. I didn't use a pattern so I think it may be a little too twirly but oh well. I hate to pay for something that I think I can figure out for myself. ;) The girls like them and I got a cool from a friend that was over so I guess they'll work.

I think that your skirt turned out great. I don't like when I get a pattern and them I'm like, yeah, DUH!!! That's exactly how I thought you'd do it! Kudos to you for having the guts to try it on your own!!:thumbsup2

This is great and I don't think there is such a thing as "to twirly"! Your little girl looks beautiful! Great job and without a pattern! You are good!
