Oh Shirrley, you have the most beautiful daughter!!! I gotta say, Lydia and her new dress looked even more beautiful in person, if that's even possible!!

Thank you. It is more a bad day for my friend than it is for me to be honest. She emailed me this morning to let me know her dh died.
 I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's loss (and yours too). My heart goes out to you.

I love to check snopes when I get email like that. I don't want to come across as a "know it all" but I do usually email a link to the person who sent me the Urban Legend. Since most of the ones circulating scare or anger people, I like to allay concerns if I can that the fear/worry isn't necessary.
You never come across as a know it all! You're always very helpful and sweet! When someone sends me a "scary" forward, I try to send them the link to Snopes that disproves it, too. I don't want them worrying over it! My cousin believes everything that lands in her inbox!

I LOVE it Shamiki (I hope I got your name right)!! I think it looks perfect, as is!

Very pretty! I don't have a clue what I'm going to do with my Princess toile, but I've got some saved for something!

I was going to do an Ariel applique like heather (hkite) did, but when I put it on the pants, the pink trim didn't look right. That's when I decided to applique a cutout from the shirt fabric. I think it matches much better! Now, what to do with the other Ariel applique that I have cut out and ready to go?! I guess a tshirt or something, we'll see! I'll just try to remember to put it on the front of the shirt and not the back, like some crazy person might do!!! :rotfl: Just kidding, heather, you know I love ya!
:snooty: Harumph!! The only way I will forgive that snide comment is if you send me some princess toile. :snooty:

BTW - I've come close to fusing an applique to the wrong side of a tee. It's just the kind of mistake I could too easily see myself doing. :rolleyes1
Oh Lisa, the sad thing is, I did it on purpose!! I thought it would come out all wonky (yay! I used our new word!), so I just "practiced" on the back of the sweatshirt. But, I loved the way it turned out and now it's on the back of her princess sweatshirt. :sad2:

Kids-MOM!!!... You're scaring the cat....He just peed on the floor...:lmao:
:lmao: :lmao: Oh my gosh, I think I just peed on the floor!

My best friend and I are going to see Def Leppard!
:rockband:
I'm sorry, but that's just funny! :rotfl2: ;)

I can't keep up!!! This thread is too interesting, and I work, so when I come home to 40+ pages some days, it's too much! lol

But I love it. Y'all are inspiring me. And I need that. I've started sewing for pleasure again. Something that's taken a bit to come. My mom was my inspiration for sewing. She taught me everything I knew. I already told my tale of her sewing everything for us...and I lost her last year. It was hard for me to want to sew again, because when I ran into trouble with something, I had nobody to ask how to fix it. But seeing everyone's creations made me want to be creative again. Thanks for that.
I just wanted to say that I'm so sorry that you lost your mom. I don't know what I'd do without my mom, so I really feel for you.

I'm glad you found us crazy ladies and that you're going to try and follow in your mom's footsteps and sew up a storm!

HELLO!! It's absolutely perfect! I love it, Cassandra, and so will DD!

Well, Evan, my 2yo SON, has just informed me he wants to wear this dress to Disney. :rotfl: You scored big in this house!
:lmao:

I have to say this again -- you guys are crazy talented. I'm so impressed with all the stuff you make.

But I have to ask -- when do you sleep?
:coffee: Huh? What?

These are really helpful directions! Thank you so much. You make it seem so easy - I really need to get over my fear and give it a try. Thanks so much!

CAN THIS BE ADDED TO BOOKMARKS? Thanks!

Yup, I added both of these wonderful tutorials under "Sewing", "Tips and techniques", "Applique how to", "Applique tips by LisaZoe" and "Applique tips by LisaZoe part 2".

Good luck with her sleeping. My kids have always been pretty good sleepers with typical phases of disturbance. My younger one has gotten into this nervous phase and she pops out of bed after bedtime with all sorts of worries. You know -- fire and bad stuff etc. She's almost 9 and very creative. Bedtime and when her brain relaxes and then she thinks of things to worry about.
Aw, the poor thing! I used to get really scared at night when I was a kid, worrying about fires. I bought my DD a smoke alarm with my voice recorded onto it. Most kids don't wake up to the sound of beeping from a regular fire alarm. Here's a link about it: http://www.electronichouse.com/article/talking_smoke_alarm/ I found this smoke alarm MUCH cheaper on ebay.

GREAT job!! I'm sure you're making Nana proud!

These outfits are adorable:goodvibes , Well done to all you clever mummy's out there;) , Only wish I could sew more than a label onto my DD's school uniform :lmao:. And here in the UK I thought you might like to know we'd love some of your sunshine, it's been the worst summer here for ages :sad2: . I'm pretty sure once the children go back to school on the 4th Sept we'll have glorious sunshine :rotfl:

Sorry to hear about the yucky summer you've been having! Here in Michigan we had almost 2 months with almost no rain (which is very unusual for us). So, my husband decided to put in a sprinkler system for our yard. The day he broke ground, it started raining and it hasn't stopped since!!

Now I know who to blame for all the rain!! How did you make out in last nights storms? Did you get any? It missed us (in Westland) but I think there was a tornado in Livonia (unconfirmed). Luckily I changed DD's birthday party to tomorrow. It was originally planned for today (HUMID and RAINING!!!) Tomorrow looks great though - sunny, with 0% chance for rain!! :woohoo: Tell your DH he can turn the sprinklers off now!!

hey, I know Westland and Livonia! I was just in Novi last month.;) My family lives in White Lake/Commerce area.

:offtopic: SW MICHIGAN ... We had a "little" thunderstorm Thursday. The high winds caused a MANY trees to fall/break in our area. + Power was out for nearly 30 hours. ...
This is some of what's been happening here, over the last two days.
note :This IS NOT OUR HOUSE, but it is OUR TREE!
Thank goodness for insurance, right!?!?
Now, the neighbors will get their "back covered stairwell" & screened in porch replaced/remodeled, sadly the cost of repairs is nearly half the value of the house. ... For two seconds, right after hearing the repair quote, I thought it was sort-of sad that it didn't hit our porch. oh well. ... At least no one was hurt. (It's a "student" rental house = thank goodness it was a vacation week & no one was home.)
(*CLICK PIX TO ENLARGE*)

:sad2: NOTE = The size of this HUGE TREE is hard to see in the pictures. (See that guy in the last picture = he's nearly 6ft tall & dwarfed in comparison) ... the base of this monster is OVER 5-6ft in diameter, and that "branch" that crushed the neighbors house was over 2ft in diameter ... The house, hit by the tree, is TWO houses away from ours. Our yard & house is not even in these pictures.

WOW! Glad no one got hurt! We had a severe windstorm here in Washington this past winter - some people were without power for 2 weeks!

yeah, it was just a LITTLE thunderstorm. :) But it sure was FAST! One minute it was a beautiful, sunny day : that turned to DARK, WINDY & SCARY in 1-2 minutes! It only lasted about 40-45 min. There's been a bit of rain off & on ever since.
There's wasn't much warning though. We have sirens here & not one of them went off, and the cable system didn't send out a beepy-warning-broadcast either ... maybe because it was a little one : dunno.
My 2 girls & I were out back when it hit (toddler pool & water slide). We ran inside, wet swimsuits and all, right down into the basement (have a little spot prepared for storms there). I grabbed the battery-op V-smile & radio along the way :) The girls FRE@K'd out for a little while, but "okay" after the noise calmed down.
We lucked out :) the Elec. Co. said we'd be without power until Mon or Tues.
Yeah, I totally agree! THANK GOD that tree didn't hurt anyone! IF this had happened next week, when students are moving in to start school (university here), I'm sure we would not have been so lucky.
Too bad, we'll most likely have to cut the rest of it down, now. There goes our shade tree. Time to plant a new one, I guess. :flower3:

Ok, applique experts (LISA!), I'm stuck already. I tracked down a pressing sheet. I traced the pattern on to the back of heat n bond lite. I pressed onto the back of the fabric. I cut out the shapes, removed the paper & pressed down onto the pressing sheet. But when I tried to pick up the whole thing, they weren't stuck together. They just fell off. Any clue what I did wrong?

Hey, it's important to look as good going as coming so why not put something on the back? :)

Did you check your iron's setting? The fusible should hold together well enough to move the fused pieces. Mine will sometimes loosen in spots but I can usually just lay them back on the pressing sheet and re-iron those spots.

When you peeled the paper off the back of your cut-out-designs, was the "clear-ish film" from the heat-n-bond attached to the back of your cut-out-design OR was it still on the paper?
Sometimes, it's not totally "adhered" to the back of the design (iron not hot enough, LIKE what lisa said above), so the clear "BOND" material is still stuck to the paper & not the cut out fabric.
just put the cut-out heat-n-bond paper & the cut-outs fabric pieces back together, with the "BOND" n the inside/between those layers, re-press them to transfer the "BOND" better, then let it cool a bit & try to take the paper off again ......
OR monkey with putting the designs on a new pieces of heat-n-bond, but be forewarned = that can make a big mess = goop all over your iron ...
when this happens to me = I heat-"tap" my fabric bits to a fresh piece of heat-n-bond, just to hold it in place, then cut it out again AND then re-iron them together = OR I just start over if I have enough supplies ... 'cuz that stuff can reap havoc on an iron.
good luck.

Ok, now the hunt is on! I decided I would go get a press pad so I could start this applique thing right. Of course, I can't find one! I checked Michael's & Hobby Lobby - neither one had it. If you're hunting, you may not want to waste a trip. I'll have to go back out later (trying Hancock's - should've checked there first).

Would a press cloth work as well? I live with a bowl of water on my ironing board. I use either an old hankie or a peice of muslin. Sometimes I just use a spray bottle of water. But the kids tend to take that play with it. Then it's gone.

I ended up finding one. It's really strange - it's teflon, but it's opaque. Nothing sticks to it. It can also be used as an ironing cloth, but it's not like anything I've really ever seen before.

The pressing sheet is a special material that fusible won't stick to. It's different than a pressing cloth... which I've used before for other things.

BTW - I can't keep a working spray bottle around the house either. DD always finds them and after she's done, they don't spray well anymore. :)

I think I must not have had my iron set right. I ended up replacing my iron today because my old one was dying, so who knows if it was heating properly or not.

SO, here's the verdict. My first applique. Be gentle. It's obviously on just a scrap. It's pretty hideous.

From a distance, it's not absolutely laughable, but man when you look at it up close, it is BAD. How do you get your stitches to be so straight? Is the answer just practice, practice, practice?

Oh I got these in the mail today and am super happy. Words cannot described how awesome this Halloween/witch outfit is! It was made by our own Dena here (hope that is okay Dena!). The second froggy outfit I got cheap. It includes the peasant top, overalls, hairbow, hair scrunchie, and shoes. It is very cute. Darling for daycare!

Please pay no attention to the piles upon piles of laundry on my table in the background! Also she was not into taking pictures, we just went to two soccer games in the 118 degree heat. Luck for us the games were at noon and 2:30 so we made sure to catch the full on brunt of the heat!!

Last night wasn't so bad, but as the_seamstress said, Thursday was a DOOZY!! One minute it was sunny and nice and the next we were running towards the basement. We lost a huge old maple tree in the front yard. Luckily, it didn't hit anything! We lost another huge tree earlier this summer.

WOW!!!! I'm glad no one was hurt!! I'm sorry you lost your tree. It's kind of sad, isn't it? We didn't lose power at all, surprisingly! Our power lines are underground, so that must have something to do with it. I heard on the news that if you had power in Kalamazoo County on Friday, you were in the minority.

You shouldn't have said anything, I had to go back and look!!:laundy:

Very cute outfits. I'm going to have to get more creative and do styles like this.

I'm glad LisaZoe mentioned it. I don't applique that much, and haven't had much trouble I just throw the muslin out when it gets old, and use a new one. This might be worth looking into, with a coupon of course!!
