Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes Part 3

I am so happy my DH is finished grad school for the summer! WooHoo! He had finals all weekend. He is now laying on the couch watching Rocky II. The pacifier is in!

I had almost 20 pages to read! I really love the 4th of July dress. Adorable!

I have more sketches and I have completed my custom plan. I also started making "mini bolts." I will take pics of my new organized sewing room.

Pillowcase dresses- When you do the binding around the armholes how do you do it? Do you use single of double fold? Do you sew it all at once or do you sew one side and then topstich the other? I do not hand sewing.

I made a corset top today, and it's finished except for the bottom ruffle, but I'm so tired of sewing...LOL, I will have to finish it tomorrow..but here are the photos...

I like your stitching and use of colors for the stitching. It looks like you did great work.
The only thing that I can think is I usually do the outline stitching after I've fused the cut out applique to my base fabric or garment. Was this a practice piece or will you stitch it to the dress in another way?

BTW - Wow, your castle looks a lot like a drawing of Cinderella's Castle I used as a source for the applique I did on this outfit.

BTW - I usually don't do such over the top ruffles but this was a special request for a little girl who is very much a pink and ruffles girly girl. LOL

Now that I have a ruffler foot, ruffles aren't as much of a chore. They sure look cute on little ones, too.

Nah, a catalog would be too limiting. I prefer to get an email with an idea that I can take and run with. That's how I did this one. I was told "pink, ruffles and castle applique" and not much more. It gives me freedom to try new things while giving me some boundaries... and I need boundaries or I'll get nothing done as I think of all the possibilities while never selecting one in case I do and then think of the perfect idea.

Thanks for you help Lisa....I have to attach it to a dress and it still has the "heat and bond" on the back. I was going to cut around the shape (leaving about 1/4 inch) and iron it on the dress then zig-zag around it. The dress is light pink and I was going to use black thread? Or should I use pink? I thought that would show up too much?

I've never tried doing it that way but I've seen it done by others. Sometimes people will leave the edge of the applique fabric unfinished to allow it to fray a little. A straightstitch close to the satin stitching is used to attach the applique to the base garment. There are so many techniques and so little time to try them all... especially when my sewing machine is in the shop and I can't seem to pull myself away from this thread.

Hey, have any of you guys used these Iron On patch type appliques made by Wrights? I just put this one on a t-shirt for DD and am wondering how well the adhesive will hold.

Any one have any experience with these? I would stitch around the edges, but I am not seeing how to do that without it messing up poor old Eeyore, and his life is hard enough

This was a fairly easy pattern, but I just had one problem after another with this one! First, I couldn't find the screw to attach my presser foot. Corey had used the ruffler attachment on the machine earlier, and had misplaced it. I found one, and was set to go, or so I though. Then, I couldn't get any of my machines to run right (then I decided to check the bobbin tension, adjusted that, and now they sew beautifully!!!), several other stupid mishahps (sewing back to front on backwards, facing didn't fit right, needle was lose after Corey used the ruffler, it came lose and bent, etc..) and then, I went to sew the skirt on, and realized I had cut the fabric out upsidedown!!!! Upside down Poohs were not going to be ok! So, I made the seam allowances smaller and cut it out again, using the same piece. Then, when sewing on the arm facing, I caught up the shoulder seam. I'm STILL not sure how I did that. Whilst using the seam ripper, I accidentally stabbed a small hole into my leg. Be careful with those things!

Now, these things would not be so annoying if I was a beginning sewer, but GEESH! I've been sewing for quite some time now! Oh well, except for the leg thing, it all turned out ok!

Sounds like everything I went through with dd8's tutu skirt!! I finally ended up shortening the elastic and handing it to dd2 who loved it!! We'll just not wear it in public Now, to start over!

Here's my latest "project" for back to school... I am not sure if I like it or not.

I buy double fold... when you are pinning it in place, you should notice there is one side wider than the other. Sew on the narrow side, that way you are sure to catch the other side and won't need to stitch it also. Hope this helps!

Something you might try if the iron-on adhesive doesn't hold up is the cool craft glue E-6000. I haven't tried it with something like a patch but I have attached some jewels to tees I did for DD and they've stayed on after washing and drying at least a dozen times (probably a lot more). That's the only time I've used it on fabric so far but I'm thinking of other uses for the future. FYI - The vapors from it are strong so I try to use it in small amounts and in an area with lots of ventilation.

When the pattern calls for me to "adjust the ease," what exactly am I supposed to do? I've read all the online definitions of what ease is exactly and this dress had me do an "easestitch." But now I'm a bit lost. The sides of the front and back do not line up, if I pull the threads like I'm gathering, I can get the corners to meet, but then how do I sew down these little gathers? Wouldn't that look odd on the finished product? Am I supposed to cut off excess fabric? Do I put it on my dd and adjust from there? Though again, I'm curious what to do once I supposedly adjust the ease. My project is on hold until I can figure this out. Thanks for any help (in nice clear words, lol).

I think of ease in that context as a way to reduce the length of one piece to match the other but not enough to actually have gathers. For example often set in sleeves will have the fullness of the sleeve cap "eased" in to fit the armhole but the sleeve isn't intended to have a puffed/gathered top. I don't know if that makes sense. What is the pattern number and where is the ease? If I can see what it looks like, I may be able to explain a bit better.

Tom, another wonderful outfit. I love brown and blue. I think it will look great in any of the versions your wife suggested. How did you finish the top? The ruffle hem looks blue. I can't wait for the next garment!!

Thank you all for the comments on my daughters outfit! It encourages me to go on!

The ruffled hem has a rolled hem, that I did on the surger. I used the blue thread to try to tie all the colors together! I am glad that you noticed!


All the outfits posted yesterday were OUTSTANDING! Gives me more ideas for the next one!

how do you attach top to bottom when you make a tshirt dress?

does anyone have any good ideas for decorating some jeans? not too fancy, but just add some cool color or a patch design?
