Is there anyone on here that would mind sharing your tips on appliques? Not the ones that you do with embroidery machines but where you would cut out material and make a picture or name and then put it on a piece of clothing. I am not new to sewing but new to this and sure could use some help.

OK...Stop everything and check out this auction it ends at 3:05. It is HILARIOUS!!!! Search voldemort: Lot of Pokemon cards my kids tried to sneak past me
You can shorten the search!! LMAO!!!

She also has a blog mom2my6pack.blogspot.com

That was too funny, her style kind of reminds me of Umama!

I bought some horse fabric from Wal-mart, washed it, and started making a dress for my friend's dd. I didn't notice anything until I pressed the seams--the fabric smells terrible! I thought it was really weird and would hopefully wash out and so I finished the dress (pretty easy pattern). I washed it twice more, and I soaked it in Biz for a long time and also tried baking soda. It still smells. It's kind of a chemical smell and it's just awful. I washed a ton of fabric on the same day and I went and smelled them all and one black/white print from JoAnn's also has this smell.

Has anyone else experienced this or is it just me??

DD8 & DD6 are going to see HSM on Ice with their Brownie troop in September. They've asked for a custom to wear and I don't know what to do. I don't want to do a cheerleader outfit, they don't care for those. I have school and Ariel on the brain so I need some help ...

TIA for any ideas you have!

We're going too! :yay:

I need ideas for something a bit tame for an almost 9 year old boy.
He likes high school musical.

Anyone?

I need to vent!!!

Saturday we are going to the Renaissance Festival. Since DD is so into princesses we are going. DH and I do not care for the whole festival. Not to offend the people who work there are just really really really weird!

This weekend is kids weekend and they are having a pirate a princess party. So, I think hey I do not have enough going on in Aimee Land lets make a renaissance princess dress out of special occasion fabric!!!! Way to go Aim!

So, DD goes to Jo Ann's and picks out $10 a yard fabric. At least I have the coupon and my pattern was $.99. The blue glitter fabric she picked was 60 inches and my pattern called for 45 inches. No problemo . . . my "super speedy" fabric cutter said you do not need that much he is the conversion. Okay, I say because both DD's and DH are with me.

We get home I read the pattern twice. I cut the fabric but wait what is this . . . I do not have enough blue fabric!!! So I think okay I will use the lining fabric for the inside of these ginormus sleeves. I have to take DD to cheerleading in the morning I will go to the Jo Ann’s there.

It is 2:00 a.m. and I am off to bed. The next morning DD goes to cheerleading and throws a huge fit because another Mom went into the gym to take pics. Of course Mommy had to come in too. (That is a no no at the Little Gym.) I tried to melt the woman with my eyes. It did not work.

I ended up having to leave Cheer so she would participate in her last class. I walked to Jo Ann's and guess what no lining fabric. I asked a employee and she actually said I do not know . . . I DON'T WORK WITH THE FABRIC MUCH!!!!! This was not a super Jo Ann's. It was a little fabric store.

So, I picked out new lining fabric and used my online coupon so I only spent a couple bucks. I get home re-cut all the lining. Last night I went to my smocking class so I did not get to work on the woodland princess gown.

This morning I get up take care of the girlies and as suggested by Utah I gave them cold cereal and blues clues dvd.

Everything that could go wrong did . . .

I sewed things wrong, I cut things wrong, seems puckered, and I spent more time with the old seam ripper that I care to admit. Then it happened- I lost my instructions. I spent 30 minutes just looking for page one of the pattern. Okay, I am feeling better. I found my pattern and I am ready to make sleeves that are as long as my DD is tall.

Then it really happened- I have lost one lining sleeve. I have looked every where. I even dug through the trash twice!! I do not have enough fabric to cut a new one and I so do not want to go back to Jo Ann's!!!:headache: :headache:

I am so sorry you are having one of those dayssss.. I know where you are coming from. I hope things get better.:goodvibes

aimme - for your rough day!

casnider - there are some tutorials in the link in teresajoy's signature.
I'm new to it too and I'm still confused!

scrapnmom - I had some 1 a yard fabric from wal mart like that - but it came out after washing it twice.

You poor dear! ((HUGS)) I'm not sure if I should tell you that I hope it all comes together soon or tell you to ditch the whole project. :rolleyes1 I was so afraid that I was going to have that same experience with DD's birthday top. 2 evenings, limited ability and 10,000 other things to do almost always spell trouble for me. :scared:

I saw that auction yesterday and read her blog last night. She's got a great sense of humor... which is probably how she's survived having 6 kids. :)

Did you see what they went for??? $142!!! WOW!!

I have had material and outfits with that weird smell too. Unfortunately, I usually can NEVER get the smell out. I had an outfit that someone gave me for Corey's baby shower that always smelled like chemicals. Kind of a gas smell. Hopefully though, someone else will have a solution to this!! Did you try a vinegar soak?

you know I had a piece of fabric that did that, but it was only some parts of the fabric. like one yard stunk and the next yard was fine. it is a smell I have never smelled before. hmmmm. mostly walmart fabrics. I think there manufacters have some dye that stinks. I found myself the other day smelling fabrics before I bought them! this little old lady looked at me funny.

lori

Have you tried soaking in vinegar? I've heard that takes smells out. Of course, then you have to wash the vinegar smell out, but that is easier than a chemical smell.

OT:
From "You know your a cast member if..."

You know how to smile and politely answer the question “Why is it raining?” (YES, we seriously get that one.)

for the full list..

wait..I think my DS asked me that the other day....so I am partly trained for being a CM. :)

aimee, Sorry you are having a icky day.
My day is a bit grumpy to but its not sewing related. Grrrr.
Ok, back to reading the "You know your a cast member if"

100acre - love the minnie shirt!

Could you tell me about the peasant top? Did you put a casing in the middle (about at empire waist length?) It looks like it may be gathered there? Is it a casing, or did you shir it? I've got the basic peasant shirt thing down, but would love to add this extra element.

I'm the same way, I have about 6 projects going right now and I'm wanting to add 2 HSM outfits to that!

What pattern did you use for the peasant top?

Which pattern did you use? I love this nightgown!
So cute! I want to try making a peasant top one of these days.

Thanks guys!

I used Simplicity 5118 for the top. It wasn't supposed to have the ruffle on it (because I HATE to hem circles), but I screwed up & cut on part to the pattern length instead of the longer length I wanted (and had already cut the other side to be). I shirred the sleeves & neck instead of making a casing & inserting elastic (I've done it the other way & it's cute that way too I just wanted to practice shirring some more). I also did 2 rows of shirring to make it empire-waisted-ish. It's cute, but it tends to ride up & make my 3 yr old look like she needs a bra. Not quite what I intended. :lmao:

The gown is Simplicity 9968 I have made almost every version in the pattern & they are ALL adorable & pretty easy. Until I found this thread, this pattern is what I used Disney (and Hello Kitty) fabric for.

Okay, what do you'll think? Which looks best? I had planned on doing it on a white tshirt, but might just leave it on this. Does the red look okay? Maybe outline in black? But where do you like the word Dallas best?

Mostly a lurker here (since waaaaaaaaaay back in the thread), but you guys do such awesome work. :thumbsup2 You keep me inspired. I've got 3 princesses (almost 12, 6, and 20 months) and a full-time job, so I don't have much time to sew. I've made a couple of things - I'll have to take some pics and share. I've also accumulated massive amounts of cute fabric that I really need to do something with. This thread is dangerously addictive. I feel like I should introduce myself by saying 'My name is Kelley, and I am addicted to custom Disney clothing.' :rotfl:
100acre, I noticed you're from Arkansas. Do you mind sharing around where you live? I'm from Searcy.
