Ok, I'm going into lurkmode for a while. At least, I'm going to try to. I know it will be hard, but I homeschool my children and we have to start school today. Well, we don't have to, but we are. My computer breaks will be spread out the day between tasks and my sewing is going to be limited to quiet time and after the girls go to bed. So, you all keep sewing and inspiring me and I will be lurking, maybe ;) .

Have fun with the homeschooling. We also homeschool, but won't be starting till after Labor Day. We want to wait till the pool closes for the year.

I have a Kenmore sewing machine, an older one, about 10 yrs old or so. ANYWHOOO, I want to buy a ruffler foot for it and all I can find are the New snap on kind. Does anyone know if this will work on the older models that are not the New snap on kind? UGH. I reallllllly want a ruffler foot. :upsidedow

My ruffler is 25 years old. It was my Mom's. My machine is one month old. They work fine together. I just have to unscrew the shank and screw on the ruffler. I may invest in a new ruffler eventually but I have been investing in a lot of sewing lately!!!

Most likely the whole bolt...about 10-12 yards or more...
If anyone knows how to get wrinkles out of tulle, I'd love to hear it...

Me too. I have a couple of VERY wrinkly twirly skirts that were sooo cute until they were worn for about 15 min.

ETA:I guess I should've finished reading. Thanks for the tips.

I don't know if this is the clip art site that was posted but this one is my favorite:

Hope this helps!

Camping Griswalds- I think you only do it backwards if it's a letter of the alphabet so you can read it without a mirror, I think that's what that meant, anyway. But I can't give you the step by step, or I'll REAllY mess you up. Hope someone has a step by step to give you.

I just got my bolt of 50 YARDS of pink tulle for DD's birthday party! It was only $30 WITH SHIPPING on Voldemort. I'll post pictures after her party next weekend. We are hoping for a nice day. If it rains all my decorating plans will be for naught!! (It has been pouring in my part of Michigan for 2 days, and is expected to rain the rest of the week :scared1: )So after the party I'll have LOTS of left over tulle!!!

I know this has been mentioned a ton of times, but does anyone have a link to an easy twirl skirt or strip skirt pattern? I found some adorable pirate fabric, and I wanted to make a Halloween skirt.

Thanks!

Does anyone have a website of their clothes for sale that they would be willing to pm me? :goodvibes

That sounds like my brother. We call him Uncle no fun. He gave my DD3 a responsibility chart for her birthday!

I'm still reading, but had to post.

Are you fer real? Or are you kidding? That's insane!

Utah - you should post your "birth control" video.
heheheheheheh.

I sewed a whole bunch this weekend, but my camera batteries were dead (I'm seeing a trend here).
So by the time they were charged, I lost my model.
She LOVED the tulle skirt, btw.

And after looking at my first two projects, I think I'm not going to have her wear them.
Cuz they're crappy. heh.
which means I have to sew more!
but school starts next monday for me, so I doubt I'll have time.
cuz I have 30 days!
woo!

I have another question for all of you ladies & Tom.....

When you buy a pattern (say a size 3, 4 & 5) and your child needs the 3, do you trace that size on something so that you don't waste the 4 & 5 sizes to?

I usually trace my sizes on butcher paper so that I don't ruin the other sizes that she isn't in yet and I get the most money out of my patterns. However, I am out of butcher paper and don't know where to buy it (my MIL gave me the last roll I had and she lives out of state) and I really want to do some sewing on a new pattern.

Love the shirts! Could you do a close up pic of the design? Were there sequins on the pumpkin part? Or was it just a fabric with a pattern? I would LOVE to CASE this!

No sequins just orange cheetah printed fabric and lime cheetah fabric for the leaf and yellow for the mouth. Since I made these for my dd's I haven't done a close up in that style, but I was inspired by this adorable clip art I found!

I asked this very question in another forum about a year ago.
Most fellow sewers told me that they use several of those smaller bolts that are about 8 inches wide by 25 yards long available at Wally's sometimes(for a total of 75 yards), so they are not using the 75-100 yards of 44 inch tulle on a regular sized bolt. They then cut them in to designated lengths so as to double the measurement from the waist to the bottom desired hem and "knot" them onto a band of elastic that they have sewn closed matching a waist measurement.
I haven't made a tutu this way. I still make them with the regular tulle on a bolt. Different methods achieve different looks. I have seen a fairy tutu, where the ends are cut a a drastic angle. They are adorable!

lazydazy- LOVE the decoupage jean set and peasant top. I love that it is disnefied without being over the top.

Olliegirl- Adorable halloween mickey tees. Do you do one for Christmas as well? I would love to see since we are going in Dec. We used to live in So.Cal for 5 years, but came back home to the Midwest.

Here are my 2 girls in their back to school outfits.

Here is the Halloween twirl skirt that I finished for my DD7, now I have to work on the one for DD5.

This is the peasant top for DD5. Do you all like the MM head centered or down to the side?

And best of all. I went on a walk with my son this am and look what I found in someone's trash. I don't normally go dumpster diving, but this was right beside their trash can at the end of their long driveway. I had to clean it up a bit but I thought it would be a pretty awesome decoration in my sewing room.

Keep making me laugh girls. I love reading all your comments on life and everything else.

Ok, this is my first attempt at appliques. The first thing I did was the name "Ariel" and I'm really proud of that. The next thing was the Ariel cutout from the fabric of the top and that was a little tricky, but I managed. Then I did Sebastian... now that was rough. I thought it would be easy since it's all one color, except the eyes. Actually, in hindsight, it should have been easy. I just made it complicated by not knowing how to finish the inside lines. I think it looks horrible, but Sarah loves it and that's all that matters. Anyway this is my first one, I have another one to do and it will be a little different.

BTW, don't look too closely!!!! All constructive criticism and advice will be gratiously accepted!

ETA: I CASEd this from here, I think it was revrob or Tink that made one similar for their dd.

OH MY GOODNESS!

Are you in Murfreesboro? I can't remember where you said you were.
Will you come to Franklin and teach me?
That applique is PERFECT!
I have that material and wanted to do an applique on a shirt for Jeanie to match her skirt -
but after my nemo applique, I think I'll pass.
I'll post pics of it later.
But, suffice it to say, I suck at appliques!

ok, finally got my new ruffler foot for my singer advance. finally figured out how to attach and use it- it came w/ no directions!:scared1: quick call to the headquarters in tn solved that. i practiced and i have the ruffle effect. however, im making dd a tshirt twirly dress and after i ruffled the twirly part, i feel like it needs to be ruffled more (a tighter gather). i have increased the top tension as much as it will go. should i mess w/ the stitch length or width? any suggestions? i really want to finish this dress today! thanks!

Okay can someone tell me why I need to do these backwards? A step by step process perhaps? Or is this in the bookmarks page??? I have Heat N Bond and just a little fabric:rolleyes1 so I'd appreciate help. i actually have about 3 minutes of "alone time" today without DH and kids. Of course it's supposed to rain, so that 3 minutes will be gone:eek:

Step by step-
adhere the fabric that you want to applique to the heat n bond. Leave the back of the heat n bond on. Stencil the letters, or whatever shape you are doing to the back on the heat n bond paper, you must draw them BACKWARDS so that when you cut them out it with be correct on the front fabric, it you don't the letters will be backwards on the fabric. Since you are drawing on the back it is the mirror image. Make sense? After the design is cut out, take off the back of the heat n bond and adhere the applique fabric to the garment fabric. Applique.

I'm still reading, but had to post.

Sad, but true! He has sent her a baby sign language dvd, a phonics game, and respsonsibility chart. We sent very nice thank yous to be polite. I understand there is a place for all of those things but . . . we send super fun stuff that the kids will love. My DH says if it does not have batteries do not send it to them.

I am not an expert by any means. I will tell you what I have figured out but hopefully a pro with give you more advice. I did the twirl halloween skirt using a ruffler foot. While I was playing around with it, I thought the best effect was to set it at a 1 setting (which means it ruffles every 1 stitch) but at a 4 depth (deepest depth for mine is 8), this way it is not so pleated looking but more of a tight gather. Now I adjusted the stitch length to a 4.5 so that it was a more spread out gather. At this setting the ruffle was almost half of the original cut fabric. I may have a different ruffler but I did experiment with the stitch length to find exactly the effect that I wanted. So if you want a tighter ruffle then shorten the stitch length, longer lengthen. Hope that helps.

I have a roll of pattern paper - about 24" wide; bought it at a sewing show years ago. Less flimsy than the tissue in the patterns but not that long-lived. Rating::thumbsup2

There's that gridded stuff (with the interfacing) at JoAnn's. Good because it's all but indestructible. I write all the good stuff on there - pattern number, size, piece, ... with a marker. Rating::thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

And freezer paper. I like freezer paper. (If the butcher paper you had is plain on one side and waxy/shiny on the other, this is freezer paper.) You can IRON it to fabric and it STICKS! :goodvibes Less pinning! And it can be re-ironed on a bunch of times. Grocery store, with the saran wrap/wax paper. 18" wide, and I have yet to find a size 7 pattern (barring the poodle skirt!) wider than that. Decent durability for remaking patterns. Rating: :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Freezer paper's good for those of you doing letter appliques, too. Cut out the letter (right ways) from freezer paper. Iron to the freezer paper letter to a slightly oversize fabric piece. Stick the fabric/freezer paper letter to the heat-n-bond. Cut out. Peel the freezer paper off, and stick the heat-n-bond/fabric to your garmet.
