Love these outfits. I would not add the mickey head to the 2nd outfit since you already have 1 with the head on it, but just my .02 as I like clean lines. The bracelet is gorgeous.

Great job to everyone that has posted lately. I have so many ideas from all of you now I just need to figure out what to actually do with all the fabric I just bought.

We have also been thinking about Halloween costumes since I've always made them. DD7 wants to be a rock star and I thought about doing a crazy tulle skirt and then a shirt with some bling on it. DD5 wants to be Hannah Montana, but DH wants her to think of something different. DS3 says he wants to be Buzz Lightyear but that could change tomorrow. My DH says I should just buy him a costume because he thinks home made costumes for boys look too girly.

I thought this might be fun....

I'm wondering what kind of costumes people are making their kids for Halloween? A lot of people think it is just too early to start thinking about Halloween but if you are like me and want to make them, it's probably time to start getting some ideas.

My DS wants to be Jack from The Nightmare Before Christmas, so I am going to attempt him the pinstripe suit w/the weird collar -- he is soooo excited! I'm not sure what I am going to do for DD. My son keeps saying that she could be Sally (from the movie also) but I just don't know how well she will react to it (she'll be almost 3). She loves the movie but I would have to paint her face up and spray her hair red.
clipnight2.gif

She saw the picture while I was typing and says that's what she wants to be but we'll see.

So anybody else already thinking about Halloween?

Yep! I have no idea what DS is going to be yet. I'm trying to steer him away from what he's asked for so far (Beast Boy and Sponge Bob). I don't mind sponge bob so much, but the beast boy costume will be way too hot for Louisiana in October.

I'm not sure about DD yet either, but we're definitely thinking about it already.

I LOVE the Jack and Sally idea!

I was thinking of doing the JonJon's black on top and red on bottom but, the pattern is 4 pieces and I am not sure how to cut them where they will all line up. :confused3

Yay, no zipper. I've never done a button hole so I think i need to get over that fear! And might I say, "CUTE!!!!!!!" I just love that fabric! Where did you find it? Would you mind if I colpy you? :cool2:

Please feel free to copy. I got the fabric at Joanns Fabric. DD told me she didn't like it at the store. But after I made it she wouldn't take it off.

I think you can probably do the button holes with your new machine. Most new machines have a button hole feature. Just check your manual.

I need to add the loops that go on the back of the top. They are designed to feed the ties through and without them the front of the top slips forward. I was trying to skip adding them because I thought it would look better without them. The pattern calls for you to put one loop on the back but I have found that two loops works better. I have made 4 tops with this pattern so far and I like it a lot.

Good Luck and happy sewing.

Funny I was just searching for ideas last night...My boys always pick their own so we'll see what they choose but I have a new baby girl that I'm so excited to dress up for halloween....

My thoughts are - I really don't want to do a princess because it's so expected and I want something different....I would like to do a tutu with the colors suggesting the character (i.e. bumble bee yellow/black, pirate red/black witch orange/purple black etc) I'm just trying to be creative on the idea but keep it simple for her...I'm hoping to do a long sleeve t-shirt, tutu, matching bow (I make bows) and tights....So it's more of a suggestion of a character but not necessarily the character...Does that make sense????

Any input would be appreciated....I would love other suggestions that would fit my idea......

Just my thoughts on the whole princess thing (I have a dd2) When they get to the age that they know the princesses, they'll want to be them, then you'll HAVE to do it so why not do easier, un princessy stuff now. You could make her a dalmation ( I do know the urge to dollup a new baby girl, I had 7 years of BOY before so I was definitely -and still am- a pink/frill addict!!) w/ a white sleeper make some spots- you could be cruella deville. Or she could be Nemo orange sleeper/ couple of white stripes, see where I'm goin' w/ this? I made my DD who was 3 months on her first halloween (MNSSHP) Tinkerbell. I knew it was probably the last time I'd get DS(then7) to put on tights!!! I'm likin' the 101 dalmation idea. If you could get DS's and Hubby to play along (DH could be one of the robbers(dark golf type pants/driving cap or the songwriter- what'shisname? with a pipe and some sheet music)

So anyway, my thinking is skip the princesses, cause you're gonna have to do them in the future when she will REALLY appreciate them.

Question

I am thinking of making some more of this type of outfit for my Ds for our Sept. trip.
DSC_1248_5x7_7-1.jpg

It will be VERY HOT and this outfit has interfacing around the top. Maybe around 1/4 to 1/3 down plus the fabric over top of that. Hope that makes sense. Do you all think that will be too hot? Any other options. I had thought maybe just do a bias tape around the neck and arm but, that might not look very good. I am not the best sewer.

I was also thinking of making one in red with giant buttons on the front like mickey's pants. Do you think that would look good (would people get it)? Probably for evening because red is almost as hot as wearing black.

TIA!

I made several of these for my DS also and I don't think it will be too hot. Do you plan on having him wear a tshirt with it also? I have coordinating tshirts and I am going to take the shirts off if he gets too warm.

The backyardigans are so cute. Did you make that one?

My boys are at the age too old for me to make them very much. I thought SLEEP PANTS would be nice. That way I'm not constantly making the daughter stuff and not them. I miss them being small and uncool!

My oldest DS will be driving in a few months...but when at Disney, he will humor me and wear mostly anything I toss out there. I coordinate the family to look like Disney dorks. Well, that is how my son would phrase it anyway. :rotfl: At home, not much in the way of mouse gear or homemade creations for him. Pajamas and camp shirts are about par for the course for him at the ole homestead.

I hear you...I miss mine being so small (and wearing whatever I want and whenever I want them to). Short of popping another one out, I think I have to wait for grandchildren!

Here's my latest creation. At first, neither DD wanted it because they didn't like the Pooh fabric. But DD3 decided she would wear it. The top is one I bought and added the Pooh iron-on.

PoohOutfit2.jpg

PoohSitting.jpg

And here's the twirling pic. She kept twirling too fast, so it's a bit blurry.
PoohTwirl.jpg
It's so cute. I really like the Pooh fabric.

I called my Mom today to tell her about the smocking plates I found and to my surprise . . . guess who knows how to smock. Yeppers, my Mamma! I am so excited because she is going to teach me. We have seven months to WDW, seven park days and nine "disney" plates. I am so excited!!! I think if I can do one a month. I will have enough time to have a smocked creation for each day. Turns out it was buy one plate get one free. So, got five free plates!!! My favorite is the Wizard of Oz plate. I want to insert it onto the Dorothy costume.

My DD3 is really into costumes but the babes will be about 19 months in March. She will look adorable in her fancy smocked dresses. I am so excited.

I made a nemo sundress last night. I am planning on listing it. I had my DD try it on and she said thanks for making me a Nemo costume. I can wear it on the seashell ride. Oh no! I will have to make another one. I am going to do bows to go with because it is pretty simple.

I bought some white flip flops too. I think I will try and match the bows and shoes. I will photograph it later today.
I'm happy for (but envious of) those of you that have a family member to teach you. I stopped at a boutique today and the owner gave me the name of ladies who teach smocking and the name of a local smocking guild. I am so excited!! My goal is to make DD's Christmas dress this year.

Okay, so I've been enjoying everybody else's boutique creations for months, but I've yet to share any of mine. So, without further ado--here are the boutique Disney clothes I made for my DD who will be 15 mos. at the time of our DisneyLand vacation. These outfits have been done for at least a month, I just hadn't taken the pictures and gotten them posted...sorry!

100_3400.jpg

You know you've gone over the deep end when you've made a TWIRL skirt for a child who can't even WALK yet!:sad2: The ribbon really does go all the way across the front of the top and into the seams, it's just the way it's laying for the picture. The Minnie ears is my first applique. I've practiced on woven cottons, but I've learned it's a whole new story on stretchy knits. It wasn't too difficult though.

100_3384.jpg

A little peek of it on. I love how the ribbon ruffle on the top flits out when it's worn.:)

100_3396.jpg

Since our DL trip is at the tail-end of October, sometimes the weather can get pretty unpredictable. My goal was to make outfits that could be layered easily without taking away from the design. The front buttons look a little uneven in the picture, but they really are straight and not pinched. It's just hanging a little wonky for the photo. I didn't notice until after I got the photo posted. If any of you remeber, this is the top that got ruined by the stupid plier snap tool (DO NOT BUY ONE OF THOSE--Now that I've used it and seen the tool's design flaws, I don't see how it can possibly get a snap attached properly!) Anyway, I made several variations to the pattern one of which was to eliminate the snap entirely. I didn't like the snap anyway. Anyway...the original plan was to put a Minnie ears applique on this outfit somewhere, but after it was sewn, it just seemed "finished" to me and that an applique would almost be "too much". I don't know... what do you think Minnie applique or no Minnie applique??? Even though I *own* lots of the larger Minnie dot fabric, I special ordered the smaller Minnie dots (twice...thanks to the stupid snap tool) to look more scale on a baby. I Adopted the theory that you wouldn't want to tile a smaller bathroom with large 12" tiles, now would ya?

100_3407.jpg

This is the bracelet I bought to go with the above outfits. I LOVE IT!!! I know the photo leaves much to be desired, but it was difficult to photograph to say the least. I can't tell you how incredible this bracelet is. It's polymer clay with red and black swarovski crystals. The polymer beads are *amazing*! If you notice the bead on the left has perfectly-formed tiny 3-D mickey ears that go around the perimeter of the bead..too cool! In fact, all of the polymer is 3-D absolutely NONE of it is painted--right down to Minnie's eyes! This polymer artist is amazing to say the least!

I'm having matching combo bows made to match these outfits as well.

Anyway, that's it for now. Hope you like them!!:goodvibes
Then I'm over the deep end with you. DD isn't walking and may not for awhile, but I'm planning a couple of twirl skirts for the next few months.

I am IN LOVE with the outfits you posted!! I love the combination of fabrics on the first one and the design of the second one. I've seen a similar pattern except the back of it is like your front. I think someone here has made it before. Do you mind sharing your pattern? I'm so excited to see more of the baby/little girl customs.

Funny I was just searching for ideas last night...My boys always pick their own so we'll see what they choose but I have a new baby girl that I'm so excited to dress up for halloween....

You're in the same quandry as me. I want something that's still age appropriate, but I'm not thrilled with the ideas I've come up with so far.

Last year she was the most adorable pumpkin. It's one of the cuter pumpkin costumes I've seen.

I think people would totally get the buttons, and it's a cute idea. If you look back at the poster (someone please help me with the name!) that put together the Minnie and Mickey outfits without sewing for inspiration. I knew exactly what her Mickey costume was.

As for the Jon Jon/shortalls/romper if you stick to lightweight, soft fabrics you'll be fine. We live in Louisiana which has a climate very similar to Orlando and my DS wore these all the time when he was little.

PS That picture is adorable! What a handsome little guy!

Well this is it, last post for the day, looks like I'll get that NBC costume pic in tomorro...

I have been searching tirelessly for a "redondo" style spiral twirl skirt tutorial or free pattern to NO AVAIL.. I couldn't even find the one they said they had on YCMT- at which point I'm gonna order the Studio Tantrum one anyway.

All I can say is it's a good thing I have other projects to keep me going, cause I'm broke and the mortgage is due. AGAIN!! and DH (a local accoustic musician) told me he needed a sound mixer- fine, $300 :headache: to fix this crackling noise, then the next day was like "UM, guess it wasn't the mixer, I need a new power amp":thumbsup2 Great!

I SOOO better get a new sewing machine for christmas!!

Ya'll have a great night hope to check in again soon.
Keep the creativity flowing!!!

I totally get what you are saying...I'm actually trying to avoid the princess thing but I am liking the tutu idea - easy to make, lots of colors to work w/depending on the idea, easy to wear w/onesie and tights just pop the tutu on and voila!!! Just trying to come up w/a theme to work with that's NOT a princess....The tulle skirt is to make me happy;) Need to be girly after 2 boys who will probably want to be some scary freaky thing.pirate:

theme ideas I have
witch - orange/blk/purple tutu
bumble bee - yellow/black tutu
ghost - white tutu tied w/blk ribbon (I saw this somewhere else and it looked really cute)
After that I'm stumped...Just trying to come up with something fun:thumbsup2

My biggest thing is I want something she won't be out of in 10 minutes. We do lots of stuff at Halloween time and I remember when the boys were younger I'd have these great elaborate costumes and they'd want them off in 5 minutes....I'm thinking w/a tutu she won't be too bothered like she would if she had a hooded costume or wings.

I'd love to see the pumpkin outfit...I'm beginning to think I like your style with the smocked dresses and all. Your kiddos are so cute! I just love their little pics. How old is your daughter now.

I Looooooove these outfits!!!!!!!1:love: You did an awesome job! When you are done with them, let me know if you want someone to take them off your hands!;)
Great work!!!! I love polka dots

bengalbelle--
The pattern is NewLook 6689. I lengthened the capris to pant length and stitched grossgrain ribbon into the seam to act as a tie so I wouldn't have to use that wonky snap (it would show through where you sewed or set it in on the front side of the outfit if you did it as directed). I loved the pattern though. It's a fun look and works well for ALL seasons.

A (cute not scary) witch and bumblebee are on my list too :goodvibes

The pumpkin costume I have is this one: http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=6166&cmSource=Search

It's even cuter in person! I bought the black long sleeved onesie and black tights from The Childrens Place. The Jack o lantern face actually comes off, and it's really cute that way too!

DD just made 11 months. How old is your daughter?

I really want to try the patchwork twirl skirt this weekend. I have made 3 twirl skirts now and I think I'm ready!!!

My biggest question is this - how do I know how big I want each square to be? I have all the math figured out (how long and how wide each tier should be) but I just don't know what what looks best or works best. Any suggestions? I saw somewhere that you didn't want them much skinnier than 3 or 4 inches wide?

Also, I would love some input on gathering. I have been just sewing one line of stitching (using the widest stitch on my machine) and then gathering. I have seen on a couple of sites suggestions that your should run 2 lines of stitching. Would love to hear what others do!!!

I was thinking of doing the JonJon's black on top and red on bottom but, the pattern is 4 pieces and I am not sure how to cut them where they will all line up. :confused3
Just an idea
THere is usually a place on the patterns to lengthen or shorten a pattern. I would cut it there and then make sure you allow extra fabric for a seam allowance when you put it back together.

I haven't checked my pattern to see if it would work though. Take a look at one before you start cutting!

I'll hurry and answer your question before I log out. My MIL and FIL have been driving all day and are set to get here in less than 2 hours and my house is *so* not ready for company. I chose 4" patches for dd twirl skirt. I didn't want them *too* big b/c she's still a baby and I wanted it to be scale on her. In other words, I wanted there to be more than one row of maybe 8 larger patches and the skirts done if ya know what I mean.

The absolute *best* method I've learned to date for perfect gathers/ruffles (aside from a handy dandy ruffler foot attachment) simply zig zag over a length of dental floss w/o actully stitching into the dental floss. When you're done, just pull the detal floss to fit and *voila* you have perfect gathers in about 1/2 the time of the old string method. Plus, you don't have to worry about the string breaking and having to start all over.

Okay, I've seriously gotta run and finish up my house for dd's birthday on Friday and my guests. I'll check in with y'all later. Have a good day everyone!!

My first appliqué!! I've putting off trying an appliqué because I was so afraid I would suck:rotfl2: :rotfl2: So finally I told myself I had to try and it came out okay! I am so stoked :cool1: :cool1:

I also struggled with how to make an Epcot outfit for ds. I made one similar to Dena's for dd if you remember, and I wanted something with the friends around the world fabric for the boys. But I can't make shorts because it will be December, and ds isn't really a button up shirt kinda guy. So finally I figured it out! So here is my first appliqué and my epcot outfit for ds in one! Ignore the fact that ds5 is a total ham :headache: I will make another of the same thing for ds1 next.

In my opinion, for the squares or rectangles just do what you see appearing in other areas that are eye pleasing, such as 4x6, 5x8 and then add on for seam allowances.
It is much easier if you do 2 lines of a basting stitch, it helps to keep the gathers in place.
Good luck with the skirt.
