Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes Part 2

I got my first sewing machine!!!! Thanks to you ladies I am learning to sew. The sewing machine has been shipped an is headed my way. Now I need help. Think "idiot's guide to sewing" here. What accessories do I need? I have:

scrap fabric for practice
good fabric for projects
scissors
thread (need more of matching colors, any brand recommendations?)
seam ripper
patterns
ribbon
soft measuring thing to get measurements


What else do I need? What kind of ruler, measuring thing do I need?
I looked at the rotary cutters but I wondered if I would slice the table up with it. Plus I'll have a toddler running around and didn't think that was safe.
Do I need pins and such?
Help ladies! I have no clue!!

My suggetion - get some good scissors. My dh bought me some for my bday. Sad, but it's what I wanted!!! Anyways, I tried cutting out a pattern with my $2 Walmart scissors and it was just awful. My new ones are great!!!

It has a lot of useful information, kind of like an online sewing course. It explains what the different pattern markings mean, how to do different techniques, and all sorts of useful stuff!

Amen to that! My creations are much more basic than most (and I'm not sure they're really "boutique/custom" so much as homemade -- sorry if that takes the thread away from the OP's original plan, but I'm loving all the stuff posted here.) But I'm having a ball making stuff.

On a less than fabulous note, I took my lunch hour today to drive to Hobby Lobby because I saw a fabric there in May (last time I was there. It's not close) and I wanted some to make capri pants for DD.

They have a *ton* of stuff, including Disney, on clearance. And their "regular" shelves are practically bare. They were out of the fabric that I wanted though -- and the clerk didn't expect to be getting more -- so it was a wasted trip.

I thought about "stocking up" on the fabrics they had just in case I think of something to do with them later. But, I didn't because I really want to make a twirly skirt next and if I bought the fabric, I'd feel obligated to make something out of it before buying more.

Someday I'm going to learn my lesson about buying things when I see them....but apparently the lesson was not learned today (just watch. In about 6 months, when I finally get up the nerve to do the hawaiian shirt that DS wants, I'll wish I had some Buzz Lightyear fabric. They had some cute stuff today.)

A little OT, but when I got married, I made my own wedding dress. After we (me and Mom) bought the fabric, a gorgeous double sided satin, my Mom said, "You know, Teresa, you can NOT make any mistakes on this dress, becasue you won't be able to take them out." I thought to myself, "watch me!" Well, I made some mistakes, and I took them out and redid them, and the dress still turned out beautifully! Mom was so stressed about my wedding, I don't know what she would have done if I had replied, "Done is better than perfect!" but, it is so true!!!

And now, I'm going to use this as an excuse to post my wedding pictures! The answer to both of your questions (the ones no one asked yet) is 19(years).

And, just to tie it all in with Disney, there are little hidden Mickey's all over my veil made out of pearls.

Along with that I was taught to ONLY use scissors on fabric. Basically have a special pair of scissors that are only used for your sewing stuff. I have done that and it does make a difference.

Pins would be good too (along with a pin cushion). Another thing that would come in handy (and mine disappeared so it's driving me crazy so I'm going to have to go get another one), is umm...I'm not sure what it's called but it's looks like a small slide ruler, it has a thing inside that is almost like T that slides. Basically, I use it to make sure the hems are even. Say, you want 1", you set it to 1" and then measure that you have pinned 1" at each section, so you don't get a 1" hem in the front & a 1 1/2" hem in the back or something by eyeballing it. I guess you could use your soft measuring tape to do that too but I really like the litte tool. I'm sure someone here knows the correct term for this tool & can clue you in.

Oooh... yes. I have one of those and I use it all the time. I just spent way too much time googling to find out what that thingie is called (as I call it my "hem measuring thingie.") It apparently goes by the not-much-more-descriptive term "sewing gauge."

Now, just a few notes about what I've learned on this thread:

1) If you see Disney fabric at WM, Joann, Hancock, flea market... buy some, at least one yard! Why? Because you're gonna be reading this thread one day and see something made with it and you're gonna say "I saw that same fabric, and I wish I had bought some" Then you're gonna try to find it on ebay and end up paying $15 per yard!!!

I was just thinking about the previous post on the lesson of just buy the fabric when you see it after reading your post. Then reading yours about how you'll wish you had some had.

I was at JoAnn's last night and it took oh, about all my restraint, not to buy a bunch of fabric because the only thing going through my mind was "If you see Disney fabric buy it because eventually you'll want it". The only good thing is going into that store with a time restraint makes it so much easier to resist. I went in looking for red ribbon to spice up DD's shirt. I found red ribbon with black prints that just screamed "Cruella" to me. Then I did find red fabric with doggy paw prints & got that to somehow go. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. So go in for 1 thing of ribbon (and possibly the iron on of Cruella -- was hoping to not have to order on-line) and come out with 3 differnet types of ribbon, Ariel/Nemo/Buzz iron ons & fabric. If I had more time, I'm sure I would have talked myself into a few yards of each of the other Disney fabric.

I saw some Mickey Mouse Halloween ones and thought that it would be good for anyone going to MNSSHP, so was tempted to get some even though we would probably never go during that time. I might still go back. They also had Mickey & Minnie with hearts, that reminded me of Valentine's day.

I'll have to check Hobby Lobby out, last time I was there I was not too thrilled with their selection but I hadn't read this thread either and now I've got the sewing bug. We are going to see High School Musical on Ice in January, so after this thread I'm thinking I should make her something specific for that, that was not originally on my agenda.

Okay Okay I confess..... I'm addicted! I have been following you all for some time amazed with all you untalented people out there! If I could only sew a button!! I am getting a little courage from you all and I am going to attempt a pair of ribbon shorts (if that's what you call them). We just went to Disney this May and there is no date scheduled for the next so I am going to try July 4th colors.

All of the outfits are so awesome! This site is great! O are we still supposed to do housework

Your dress is beautiful. I'd love to sew if I could do that too! It also looks like you got the Best-Dressed award that day too if you look at what your guests are wearing. I remember when those gas-station jumpsuits were in style and the matching pumps too, I'm sorry to say. The eighties, right? Hopefully.
