Can anyone tell me what the difference is in Boys clothing between a 5 and a 5x?

It is my understanding that a 5X is roomier and longer than a regular 5 so that it will fit a child that weighs a little more (maybe 5lbs) and is a little taller.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

That is the way I think it is too, a girls 6X is for chubbier size 6 girls.

I know in girls the difference between a 6 and a 6x is just the weight of the child. 6x allows more room than a 6 but the lengths are the same.

I always found the size x clothing to be the same in the waist but longer length but my kids wears slims, I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I agree with the PP. The X is supposed to be for kids who are a little heavier set.

If you're looking at jeans, you might try getting the adjustable waist jeans. DS is very trim/slender, but too large for "slim" sizes. I was able to get a full year out of his size 4 jeans that were adjustable waists. I started by rolling up the legs and tightening the waist to the tightest setting last fall. By the end of this summer, he was on the loosest setting and had the legs unrolled.

I agree, 6X was longer-in between 6 and 7. Here's my "chubby" size 6Xer :rotfl: (actually now she's a 7)

ETA,I agree about getting the adjustable waists, best invention ever! Both my kids pants fit much better thanks to that.

I think people are confusing the x size with the 1/2 size for heavier set girls or husky for boys. The x size is an inbetween size for when kids shoot up and lose their baby fat not for kids that are heavier. Go to the store and compare them you will find the waist is about the same but they are longer in the leg.

I was told th 'x' is for an in between or 1/2 size, not a plus size. This was from the clerk at the store where I buy my DD's school uniforms--she seemed very knowledgable.

My DD is totally average and she wears 6 or 6X. The length of 6X shirts is much better for her.

I agree that the x is for length, at least in girls'. DD wears a 5 slim (if it's available) pant, but a 6x shirt for length. I am not sure about boys though. DS is 2 and is wearing 2T, so we haven't shopped for that size.

I agree the x is for extra length the waist is usually the same.

Thank you all so much! That is the answer I needed and was hoping for...he needs length! He has such long legs and tiny waist and hips..an x size it is!
