Does anyone have of had a child that got bloody noses all of the time?

My almost 3yo has been getting them during the night. It started out once a month and the past 2 weeks it has been twice a week. They are pretty bad and they wake him up. They are very heavy and can last 20-30 minutes.

I though about it being dry but it didnt happen in the winter and there is no heat on now, only AC.

He has surgery in October and had his tonsils and adenoids out and ear tubes put in. I have no idea if the nose bleeds have anything to do with that.

I am going to call him ENT today to get an appt but I am sure it will take a few weeks.

I just went through a similar situation 3 months ago with my DS6. He was getting several nosebleeds per week and they were happening at school. They were also 20-30 minutes long. The school nurse suggested I have him tested for allergies. She said this happens a lot in the spring/summer with kids who have allergies. We had him tested, and sure enough, he has a ton of allergies. He's been on medication since May and has had hardly any nosebleeds since being on the medication.

My Ds used to get them. He hopefully has outgrown them. The only thing I can suggest is to close the air vents in the bedroom. Any air flowing would cause my ds's membranes to dry out. You might also try an humidifer. But I live in Ga and could not see adding MORE humidity to our air. lol

I used to get them all the time when I was little too. Hopefully he will out grow it.

My parents told me that they would have my nose colerized (when I was older). That just made me not tell them how often I had them!

I rarely get them now. I do have allergies, never knew that it might be a cause for nosebleeds.

I think AC can be as drying for indoor air as heat.

I'm glad you said going to check with doctor. My kids have allergies withoUT nosebleed issues but i have heard of other kids with that problem.

My experience, some allergy meds. that help sneezing/congestion/runny nose make you pretty dry (and could exacerbate nosebleed problems).

My son had ear tube surjury with no nosebleeds but immediately after surjury had small amounts of blood from inside ears.

....there is no heat on now, only AC....

Our AC actually dries out our air quite a bit, so DS(7) is prone to them this time of year as well. I think they also come back easily until they've really healed all the way. A tiny bit of Vasoline rubbed on his nose at bedtime helped recently. Good luck!

I agree with the idea to check with your doctor first.

When I was a child, I had daily nosebleeds. It turned out that I had a vitamin C deficiency. Once I started taking vitamin C daily or got alot in my food (citrus, broccolli, etcc) they went away. They came back any time I missed a few days though. Lasted through adolescence for me.

My daughter had lots and lots of nosebleeds as a young child. She became a good friend of the school nurse with her almost everyday nosebleeds during periods of her elementary days. I was quite worried and talked to her pediatrician and asthma doctors about it. I was consistantly told it's just a feature of having the types of allergies she has. It didn't stop my worrying (a mother's perogative I guess), but it has gotten better as she has gotten older and we've gotten better control of her allergies. Now she has them occasionally.

Yep, DD9 and DD5 both get them (DD9 more so), and they both have allergies. It happens mainly in the spring and summer for us. It was worse when DD9 was on a nasal spray, but she still gets them quite frequently.

My sister had frequent night time nosebleeds as a kid - mostly from age 6-10. She needed to run a humidifier in her room and that minimized them a lot. To this day, her nose still bleeds very easily.

Don't mean to be gross, or minimize this thread, but there's also the possibility of nose picking.

lol I though of that but not in the middle of the night. Especially with that amount of blood. He must of been wake with it for awhile because the carpet outside the bathroom door was soaked. looked like a small animal had been killed.

I called the Ent and he is going in the morning. That was shock.. its usually a long wait for him

I never though of allergies.. I will mention it tomorrow. My older son deals with allergies this time of year.

I will try leaving the ac off tonight and opening the windows. I really figured the ac wouldnt dry out the air lol

Hope it all works out... my DS has had nose bleeds on and off since he was 9months old (he is now 4.5)... comes in runs... but stops quicker at home then at school

I'm glad the ENT got you in so quickly. It doesn't seem normal to have THAT much blood. My 3 year old has occasional nosebleeds, but it's never much more than a teaspoon or so.

My DS is also 3 and has had on and off nose bleeds. It turned out to be seasonal allergy related.

My son gets them too, all year long. We ended up putting a humidifier in his room year round. I mean we get humid summers and yet with the central air there is never any humidity in the house, which led me to believe that it must be just as dry as the heat in winter. Regardless, the humidifier helps a lot, and I usually just run a few hours a day before bed and in the afternoon.

Just wanted to add that if you get no where with getting an appointment for a few weeks, take him to the ER next time he has one. They can either call the ENT on spot or give you a referrel sometimes for the next day. HTH

I'm glad you're going to the ENT. I had nosebleeds for years (I could fill a sink, seriously). I had my nose cauterized several times (including once without any topical anesthesia because I was pregnant), but it still continued to happen.

I finally found a new ENT who took the time to really thoroughly examine the problem and found a bleeder much higher up in the nostril than the one the other ENTs had cauterized. The others had all missed it. He cauterized it and it's been easily 10 years since I've had a nosebleed.

My ds has started getting them and a cauterization is definitely in the near future.

A couple of tips: nasal saline spray (like Ocean) helps keep the nose lubricated and less likely to bleed. Also, to stop a bleed, do not tip the head backward (don't know where that old wives tale came from) ... it just makes the blood run down the back of the throat. Keep the head level and apply constant pressure to the nostril. You can also apply ice to the center of the back of the neck or directly to the nose.

Another thing that helps is to really blow your nose -- that can blow out the clot. Then use a nasal decongestant spray to help stop the flow.

Hope these tips can help someone, and OP, I hope the ENT can get things resolved for your poor ds!

My DS4 gets them all the time. He has since he was about 2. I'd say he has about 5 - 10 nosebleeds a year. Out of nowhere in any type of weather. I think some kids just get them and they usually grow out of it.

My DD11 used to get the all the time. She gets the most during the Spring which we figure are allergy related. She did have her nose coiterized (sp?) which has helped to some extend although she still has the occasional bleed. The doctor reccomended a cool mist humidifier and a nasal gel called Saline Gel , you can find it in a tube near the other nasal mists, or ask the Pharmacist.
