Hi folks!

My DH has been home since Wed with a back ache.
He went to the doctor yesterday and then to the hospital for a cat scan.

We, along with the doctor, think it is kidney stones. He has other signs of it, will not go into it here, but you can figure it out!

Is there anyone here that has had them and can tell us how long this lasts, how do I keep pushing fluid down him when he can't keep water down, I feel really helpless at this point.

Thanks for any help
Lisa

Well...we just got a call from the doctor and he not only has kidney stones (that are not causing blockage right now), he has bladder stones!!
He could barely talk to the nurse. I was on the other phone listening in.
So, they are referring him to a specialist and we will see how things go.
Thanks for the help!

Aloe juice will help break them down, Ginger will help with the nausea.

DH also drank cranberry juice. Did your DH get any meds? There are things they can give that will help. Ask your Dr.

OUCH! I totally sympathise, apart from my 48 hour labour kidney stones are the worst!

I am a woman who has been suffering with kidney stones since March 2005!!! to put it nice, they SUCK. Mine are small enough to pass on their own so other than pain meds, there is not much else to do. Also, I have not yet been able to catch any to have them tested to see what is causing them!

Owww~until it passes(you might be surprised how small they are!) give him gatorade, water, cranberry juice, whatever he can keep down and pain meds. That's about all you can do. if he starts running fever contact you MD--he could develop a kidney infection as well.

I have heard women say that passing a kidney stone is worse than labor. :guilty:

If he's able to handle the pain like that at home, he's very, very lucky. My boyfriend has had them 7 times, and each one resulted to a trip to the ER because the pain was unbearable. When it starts to move, the pain will get worse. Make sure he has strong pain meds, he will need them. The pain won't just stay in the back either, it will travel all the way to the groin.

And he was told not to drink cranberry juice, just water. lots and lots of water.

you know I had them once and that sick Doctor actualy put my legs in stuirups and put a "small camera" in me, yes he put it up this  , it hurt

I have had kidney stones at least half a dozen times. Only one time did it NOT require a trip to the ER. The pain is excruciating!!

If they have done a CAT scan, they should KNOW whether or not it is kidney stones. They would show up on a simple x-ray. Another sympton would be blood in his urine.

And yes, lots of water......keep drinking the water......

Thanks for the info!
Yep..he's on pain meds..Percocet (sp)? 1 every 4 hours. Of course the pain comes back before the 4 hours is up.
I had to call him off work today and the secretary said,"He must be near his death bed, cause your DH is always here!"

He is not drinking as much as he should, I keep going in the room and shoving a drink in his mouth.

Hopefully, we will have results of the cat scan today.

He unfortunately, has not been able to catch any of the stones either.

I don't think he is really trying, though. I think he is just happy he can go.

My DH suffers from them frequently (unfortunately). There really isn't anything that you can do (other than pushing fluids) for him. This is really the best way to get the stone to pass more quickly. The pain can get very intense, and my DH's doctor prescribes him percocet for it. He has passed about 5 - 6 stones over the last 3 years. Make sure that he gets a little strainer to catch the stone once it passes. That way, he can take it to the lab to have it analyzed and hopefully find out what caused it.

Like everyone else is saying WATER. Try to get him to catch one. If they tell him what kind it is then they can help treat it better. Mine are uric acid based, so I take a medicine.

Good luck. I know it really hurts! There is also some medicine to help with the nausea. Call the doctor for that.

If the percocet is not lasting him 4hrs ask the doctor if he can take two instead of only one. that seems like a short dose for this kind of pain.

DH and I have both had them....DH more frequently than me. I would rather go through labor every day than suffer with these again!

Keep pushing the water and have him use the urine strainer. The results of the CAT scan should be able to tell him where there are in his system. I was not able to pass mine (too large, and too many) so I had to have surgery. DH has had the basket surgery (like me) and has also had them "blasted". He would much rather have them "go in and get them" than do a blast again. He said it was very painful and then he still had to pass them.

Best of luck to you hubby....and to you. It's no fun dealing with a hubby in pain! Keep us posted.

His pain goes from a low 2 on the scale way up to 5.
So it is not a consistent 5. He wants to be a martyr! Sorry, just trying to keep a sense of humor through this.

He is not fairing too well.
