Question for y'all while I decide what I'm doing...

Sudden onset left side back pain, low by waist. Comes in waves, strong waves that make me feel nauseas. No fever, chill, no UTI.

Home alone with kids - Drs. is closed. I hate ERs with a passion.

Anyone who has had Kidney Stones - is this how it starts? :confused3

Quite possibly.

That is the area I feel mine the most, but my pain usually doesn't come in waves (well, maybe at the very beginning of it). I tell you, though, kidney stones hurt so bad, you won't care what it is, you just want to get to the hospital so they can make it stop. Death doesn't even sound that horrible in the middle of it.

I've had Stones twice and the pain, it is terrible. But luckily for me either they rolled out of the way or passed through. Took my breath away. Can be dangerous if they get stuck but that's not the sort of thing a person can predict. You'll either be fine or you won't. AT the very least I would call the Dr's office and they them know what is going on so they can call the ER ahead of time if you get worse. Make sure your kids stay with you and know how to call for help, 911, in case it gets worse or you pass out from the pain and yes, the pain can get that bad. For me it came in waves too but the Dr warned it might come & not leave. I have one now but it's minding it's own business where it isn't causing any trouble so no pain.

Ditto. I kept telling the ER nurse that the pain was in the front, but I was constantly rubbing my back. It only felt mildly better when I stood up and walked around. Lying down was agony.

If it's a kidney stone and the ER has drugs, it will reach a point where you'll go. I woke up DH and DD at about 3 a.m. and dragged them both with me to the ER. (DD is too young to stay home alone.) I would NEVER have done that if I hadn't been in such extreme pain. (I was actually worried my appendix was rupturing and we were leaving for Disney three days later!!!)

I have had bad pain in my kidney area (lower/middle left back). It came in waves and was horrible. I went to the doctor to get a urine test and the doctor said it was not kidney-related. It was actually spasms from my lower back (I sit alllll day!!!). The doctor pressed my lower back and the pain was intense so it was related to that. See your doctor anyway. If it was kidney related you will have a fever and chills.

i did 13 hours with the pain until i could get in to MY dr

they sent me to the ER :lmao:

ER has AWESOME drugs

that was the worst pain I have ever had, (6 prior surgeries, this was worse). You can get relief and determine what it is

Good luck!

How about an urgent care center vs an ER?

None of the Urgent Care centers around me take my insurance. :(

I'm working quickly to finish up work for the day (just in case) but am now catching myself "breathing" through the waves like labor!

This is not going to end well tonight, I feel.

Sorry about your pain. I have had stones many times. As much as I hate the ER too I always wind up there because the pain is so awful. Like someone else mentioned my pain would come on suddenly but not in waves. I get nauseus too. Don't wait too long if you decide you need to go. The pain can be unbearable. Please let us know how this turns out

Did the pain start more mid back, toward where your ribs end?

That does sound like kidney stone pain to me. Drink lots of water and take two advil or if you have the back and body stuff (half tylenol half aspirin) that helps.

If the pain starts to move, you will probably pass the stone. Coming out of the kidney and into the ureter is the worst part of a kidney stone to me.

ER's do have some good medicine. However, if you do go to the ER, don't automatically think that they will just give you drugs and a strainer and tell you to go home. They may do a CAT scan and if the stone is big, they may keep you overnight to make sure you have progress before they let you go home. Some send you home with drugs and do watchful waiting, some don't.

The point isn't to scare you or attempt to get you NOT to go to the ER. It is just that if it does get umbearable, make sure your children are with someone who might be watching them for 12-24 hours.

Good luck.

The pain started midway from my spine to the edge of my waist. Feels like bad, bad cramping in waves.

I took a Lortab I had left over from my Gallbladder Removal in March. I am feeling wasted :lmao: but it has done nothing to the pain level. Good times.

Talked to hubby who is 650 miles away on business. He giggled - in a nice way since these things always seem to happen when he is away.

I'm trying to finish up work and go lay down to see what happens. :hippie:

Find someone to come over and be with you, a neighbor, friend, aquaintance. Appendix, kidney stones, whatever you should not be there with your kids alone.

I had them once, the pain came all at once and caused me to go down to the floor. I thought I was going to die.

I had them once. The pain was BAD. Like "I would rather give birth than go through this" pain. I don't recall it being in waves...maybe at first. Then it was just screaming (I actually cursed in front of my children) pain. Hope you feel better!

I have unfortunately had more than one kidney stone (currently have stones in each kidney that aren't causing any problems.) I have ended up in the ER at least twice..the pain always seems worse at night when you can't reach your doctor. The pain medication is worth the trip. As the mother of five, I can tell you that kidney stone pain is worse than labor. Don't wait until 2:00 in the morning to decide to go to the hospital..get someone to take you now.
Better safe than sorry (as the old saying goes.)

Uh.. not much else in that area other than kidney stones.. hope you're being seen/have someone around by now..
A beer might help (:

Have we mentioned the excellent drugs they have? They will give you an IV and send some awesome drugs straight into the vein - no waiting for something to disolve

Pain free is great, the floating wasn't bad either

Well, the Lortab helped alot and the pain was gone by the time I took by drugged self to bed. I expected it to return but it hasn't. :confused3

Honestly, I'm quite scared that it will but who knows why it hasn't yet. I'm just taking this as a gift right now as I'm belt testing tonight at Tae Kwon Do and really don't want to miss it (or do it doubled over in pain).

If the pain returns at all today, I'm going right into my Dr (if she is so inclined to be opened, that is).

Thanks for the support! Let's hope it was the muscle spasms or something like that.

I had my first kidney stone last year. Thank goodness it was a small one. For some reason, I only had the pain at night when I went to bed. Maybe it was the position - I'm not sure. I did not go to the emg room, but my gyn recommended a uronogist who did a bunch of tests and gave me meds.

DH had a kidney stone 2 years ago. Worst pain he had ever had. The man HATES going to the dr, but by 1/2 a.m. he was begging me to take him the the ER, crawling around on his hands and knees the pain was so bad.

Forward a year and he gets the exact same pain in the same area. Like you - lower, left side of his back. Figured it was another kidney stone. He told me to go ahead to work, it wasn't to bad and we'd go to the DR office after I could make an appointment when they opened.

Didn't get to do that. Got worse, very fast. Since it was the middle of the day, he just wanted me to take him to the urgent care, so we did. They did whatever tests they needed and sent us to the ER. Got to the ER around 11 a.m. and at 7 p.m. he went into surgery to part ways with his appendix. NEVER did he have any pain on his right side. It was all located on his left side. He would have bet everything we had that he had another kidney stone.

Thanks to the kidney stone, DH new favorite drug is hydromorphine.
