Hi,
we are planning a trip for next June or July for a Savannah View at AKL, but not sure which to request?

We stayed at Jambo in 2011, but were only there for a few nights and did not get to see much of the resort.

It will be myself, DH, and our two boys ages 6 and 8.

Please tell me your Pros and Cons for each!

Thanks!

We just got back from a trip last week where we toured both sides. Kidani is a lot smaller. Not just in the number of people, but everything. The walkways seem narrow, the lobby seems small. The pool area feels secluded and you have to walk out in front of the hotel lobby past the parking lot to get to it (depending on where you are coming from). I personally just didn't like that. I'd much rather stay in Jambo House if I was staying at AKL. Just my thoughts...

Kidani has DVC rooms on floors 2-5, Jambo only has DVC rooms on floor 5 (and club on 6)

Lower floors can get you closer to the animals. (Which is better for viewing)

For me, it's all about the room type. Jambo was converted from hotel rooms. For 1BR and 2BR, Jambo has the most sub-standard bathroom layout in DVC. The bathroom is not even attached to the master bedroom and you have to step into the whirlpool to use the shower.
Kidani 1br and 2br, on the other hand give you a huuuuuge, and proper master bathroom AND an extra full bathroom for the kids.
The Jambo vs Kidani studio situation is much more comparable in size/amenities....and then I would choose Jambo for QS dining since studios do not have a kitchen for complete snack prep.

The other aspect is the savanna's
Most of Kidani is on Sunset Savanna, which is geared for great animal activity late afternoon/early evening. In the morning, Sunset is kinda a bummer as animals are visiting their barn for checkups.
A little of Kidani also has Pembe savanna, which is the smallest savanna, and has Okapi instead of Giraffe. Okapi are wonderful creatures, but Giraffe make a better 1st impression.
Sunset is shared with some of Jambo, but Jambo also has Arusha and Uzima that have more morning activity (they all have rotating schedules)

And on pools...the Kidani pool "entrance" from the lobby is odd, but the Kidani pool has one of the better slides and kid play areas among DVC resorts.
Jambo has a huuuuge pool, but the slide is rather mild (which can be good or lame depending on a kids sense of adventure)

  • Kidani has a wonderful water play area for the kids and there is a higher slide at in the pool there as well.
  • Kidani only has quick service food at the pool.
  • Kidani does has one table service restaurant, Saana, which is one of our favorite.
  • The bus going to the parks stops at Kidani first and then goes to Jambo House, so you often can sit when going to the parks.
  • Kidani has a bus monitor showing expected arrival times of the bus.
  • Kidani is all DVC villas - there are 324 units at Kidani and only 134 at Jambo House.
  • You are not restricted to staying on one floor, so you can request a high or low floor getting better views of the animals at Kidani.
  • Both resorts have long hallways, but Kidani's are the longest, 9 beads per side versus 7 for Jambo House. Two of Jambo Beads are off to the side so it doesn't affect all guests down the main hallway.

  • Jambo House has the largest lobby to accommodate the 838 hotel guest rooms and 134 DVC units.
  • Jambo has two TS restaurants, one signature, Jiko and a buffet, Boma, both are excellent dining with an African Flavor.
  • Jambo has a true Quick service restaurant called Mara, near the pool.
  • Jambo House has a Club Level and DVC has 10 2BR lock offs that are Club Level villas.
  • The Pool at Jambo House is one of the largest on property. It also has a lot of areas in the shade another many do not have any view of the pool.

I'm having a hard time with this as well. I REALLY don't like the bathroom layout at Jambo House (for 1 and 2 BRs), but I like the atmosphere at Jambo House so much better. I love the Sunset Savanna at Kidani, but I would be scared I would be assigned Pembe Savanna. I like the lower floors at Kidani, but you could be on the 5th floor, just like Kidani. Oh and also, the 1 BRs at Kidani have 2 bathrooms and the 2 BRs have 3! I like the pool at Jambo better though. So hard to choose! I think if I was doing a savanna-view studio, I would choose Jambo, but for a 1 BR or 2 BR, it would be Kidani.

To summarize what's already been stated from my perspective -- Kidani rooms are much larger (both Studio & 1 bdrms). Kidani 1bdrms have second full bath - huge plus. Bussess pick up/drop off at Kidani first for all parks (Jambo is first for DTD). Kids prefer the water slide/pool/water play area at Kidani. Jambo has 2 sit downs, but we much prefer the one at Kidani (Sanaa). No breakfast (QS or sit down) at Kidani, but quick bus ride (shuttle or any park bus) to Jambo for both. More Sunset Savannah views at Kidani, which we prefer. Kidani has much longer walks to the lobby from the outer buildings in the Savannah, so we always request "near lobby" (which also puts you closer to busses, shuttle, pool). Another nicety is Simba's Cubhouse at Jambo, although we usually take the shuttle or park bus to Jambo to drop the kids off then take the shuttle or DTD bus back to Kidani to Sanaa, which is about 15 minutes roundtrip.

Jambo has three restaurants: Mara a counter service with lots of seating, Boma one of the best buffets on site, and Jiko a very good but pricey table service. Kidani has only a table service restaurant, Sanaa, which is not open for breakfast, but it is in my view is one the best on site, although also on the high side (for me anyway) but cheaper than Jiko. Yes, you can walk, take bus, or take shuttle between resorts but distance from door to door is about 1/2 mile.

Jambo's lobby and store are much larger than Kidani's and the Jambo store is the better place to shop.

Jambo has the siginficantly larger pool and has many places to find shade as trees and bushes are all fully grown, while Kidani is essentially shadeless anywhere near the pool. Though the Kidani pool is smaller, it has the much longer slide and the best kid's water play area of any of the resorts.

All Jambo rooms are on fifth and sixth floor (sixth floor has only the club level rooms and exists only directly above the lobby). At Kidani, they are all DVC rooms on all four floors (2-5). Lower floor allows more direct line of sight to the animals, but there is nothing wrong with higher floors.

If you have a rental car, the Jambo lot is across the street from the front of the resort and parking can be anywhere from fairly near the front entrance to a long way off. The Kidani lot is ideal in that it runs under the Kidani building, and at spots just outside the building but part of the same lot, and with three elevators along each of its wings, you can always find a space that is fairly close to your room no matter where your room is.

Kidani has a very good Community Hall, Janbo does not have one.

For either building you can have a long walk from room to lobby but for Kidani that walk can be record-setting in distance (up to about 1/3 mile down a hallway).

Jambo has three savannas. Arusha in the middle of the building is the best one there. It shares Sunset, the largest and also very good savanna with Kidani. It also has Uzima which is good. Sunset Savanna at Kidani has giraffes, Pembe does not and personal view is that Pembe looks too much like an afterthought designed to fill a fairly small space; it is OK but the worst of all the AKL savannas.

Studios are about the same size in both buildings (contrary to what is mentioned above). Jambo houses the toilet and tub/shower together in a separate room. Kidani has the tub and shower in the open area where the sink is, thus creating a privacy issue for use of sink and tub by two different persons. Kidney has better closet space.

The Jambo Grand Villas are single story with a room having a pool table, a master bath with a large TV viewable from the tub, and the largest porches available of any GV's on site. Kidani's two-story GV's have an extra pull-out couch at the alcove at the top of the stairs.

The Kidani 1BRs and 2BRs are about 100 sq ft larger than the Jambo rooms (the difference is very noticeable), have more closet space, the much better master bath where the tub and shower are separate (Jambo has a combined tub and shower and the tub takes a high step over to get into). The master bath at Jambo is separated by a hallway from the master bedroom, which hallway can be seen from the living room. Kidani has an extra bathroom and master bath requires entry from the master bedroom.

  • Both resorts have long hallways, but Kidani's are the longest, 9 beads per side versus 7 for Jambo House. Two of Jambo Beads are off to the side so it doesn't affect all guests down the main hallway.

For us it's Jambo House for a lot of the reasons noted above. Since Jambo is the main building IMO I feel like I am at a resort. The approach, the Lobby, all of the amenities are right there. I also enjoy the lobby and all of its detail. The food, drink and shopping options also help. For Kidani I just don't like the look of it. The bathroom and layout are less important. I also always like upper floors so Jambo is a real fit for us.

Wow, What can be said that hasn't already been?

I stayed at Jambo Value Studio spring of 2013 and then Savanna View studio in Kidani this past Nov..

Honestly, I enjoyed both for different reasons.....

The pool is much more grand at Jambo & spread out, but the slide is really small. ( Not sure if your kids like that or not )
The pool at Kidani is smaller and more subdued, but the slide is waaay better, and also has a really nice water playground area for the kids too..

Both have very good pool bars/snacks/food.

True the 3 restaurants at Jambo give you more options , & all are equally great, Kidani has an awesome TS in Sanaa, which is totally unique.

The rooms to me weren't that different...Other than being in a lil smaller room in Jambo. We did have a pool view which was fab.

The savanna view in Kidani was nice, but it's a novelty thing...I'm not so sure I'd pay the extra points to upgrade...I'd rather extend the amount of days.

The buses to the parks get picked up & dropped off at Kidani 1st, so this is a nice perk, and Jambo gets picked up & dropped off 1st when going to DTD.

Community Hall which is a nice bonus, (Especially for your 2 lil ones ) can only be found at Kidani, not Jambo.
Both have arcades, & both have FREE washers & dryers for DVC.

5th floor @ Jambo, & main floor/ across from Community Hall at Kidani.

Thanks to all for your replies!

We will definitely be getting a 1BR, so that is good to know about the extra bathroom.

Savannah View is a priority for us, as my kids, especially my younger DS, LOVE animals.

Tell me more about food options at Kidani. Am I understanding correctly there is no QS, except at the pool? I'm not worried about breakfast options, as we usually eat breakfast on our room, but we would like to be able to grab a QS lunch.

Someone mentioned there was no shade at Kidani pool. Do either of the pools have umbrellas and/or cabanas?

Thanks!

The pool bar is the only QS at Kidani
But they run a shuttle van from the Kidani lobby entrance to the Jambo entrance and back

In addition any park bus will go from Kidani to Jambo
And the DTD bus stops at Jambo then Kidani

You can also walk to Jambo.

I've never been a shade seeker, so I'm not sure about that

It seemed somewhat shady around the kids play area.

The store in Kidani's lobby (can't think of the name), started selling breakfast sandwiches a while back. Reports I've gotten is that they are pretty good. For me, it's Kidani all the way. I've been in the 2 bdrm Savannah views many times and have booked a GV Savannah view at Kidani as well. We LOVED the layout, especially the 2nd floor area with the extra TV and couch that converts to a sleeper. It was great to put in a video for the little ones and we could see them while the grown-ups all visited downstairs. Plus the giraffes slept almost under our balcony!!!

Choose both!
(Separate trips or a split stay)

You get about 50 years of DVC accommodations ;)
There is no absolute right/wrong answer so you might as well discover the best choice for you :goodvibes

Are there kids activities at both K and J?

Aside from the Community Hall (which I believe is at Kidani?) and Simba's Clubhouse (which I believe is at Jambo?), are there other activities offered?

I seem to remember something called a "primal parade" at J?

I admit-I'm biased toward Jambo. I only had ONE stay at Kidani, and after the first day, I wanted to go back to Jambo. I liked Jambo, but one day I was visiting Kidani, outside the library on the main floor and I could not only see animals, but I could HEAR them as well-clip, clop, clip, clop-as they walked. Can't hear that from the 5th floor at Jambo. So that's why I booked a stay. However, when I stayed, although I requested "near lobby", I was put in the next to last "pod" a LONG walk. And there was no place to eat-I missed Mara! (Yeah, I knew that beforehand but didn't expect to miss it so much). And although I was on the Sunset Savannah, shared with Jambo, I saw NO giraffes-I think they were all hanging out on the Jambo side. Since then, I've booked stays back at Jambo and love it. In October I have a value studio there, and I can't wait!

Stayed at both and really enjoyed both stays, but prefer Jambo for quickserve access.:thumbsup2 Loved relaxing after getting my morning coffee admiring the gorgeous lobby and Christmas tree! :santa: Can't go wrong at either...ENJOY!:flower1:

There are a lot of activities (and many are not just for kids) at both resorts, see http://www.themouseforless.com/tripplanning/resorts/wdw/pdf/AKLCalendar.pdf

As to shade in the pool area, you will find lots of places to sit under trees at Jambo. You can find it in spots at Kidani including near the water play area and the pool end near it and you can find shaded tables under the the roof overhangs at the pool bar, but I do not recall seeing any umbrella tables and vast majority of seats around the pool are in the sun.

I have stayed at both in the past several times. I haven't discovered what is the best choice for me. That's the problem. Also I don't do split stays.
