Ok..so I am contemplating Kidani Village next June 2010 for my parents 50th anniversary.

There will be 8 of us....6 adults and two teenagers.

I have read a few negatives --- like no walk up counter service for food.

Then I found this link of a negative review. I would be interested in some of you who have just gone, what your reviews are..where you stayed, savanah view, parking lot view etc.

I know the below is just one persons view..and that is why I thought I would post to see what you have to say. (there were few people saw should have just gone this summer).

Thanks!!

We will be at WDW 10 days....my parents will probably go back to the hotel during the day (most days) and sit by a pool, while some of us stay at the parks.

I'm anxious to read answers also. But isn't there a counter service/food court type of place there called Mara? It's at AKL and not AKV, but the walk isn't that long, or is it? Would the walk be any longer than from one side of a value resort to its food court?

Here's my review, in a thread with a few others:
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=31995386

Bear in mind that the review that you read only discusses a walk-around of the property -- it doesn't sound like they went into any rooms at all. I loved it, for the ROOM! With that many adults and teenagers, you'll be grateful for the 3 bathrooms in the 2 bedroom.

We had a wonderful stay there this August-we had a savanna view 2BR and while it was quite a walk from the lobby, we didn't mind the location. We were back at the villa every day around 1 or 2 to use the pool-which we loved-and some afternoons it was really hard to tear ourselves away from the animals outside our balcony. Staff was great, Sanaa very good-we walked to Mara (5 minutes) for breakfast and caught the bus there-another day we got off the bus at Jambo, had lunch at Mara, walked back to the villa. We didn't miss the counter service at all. If you have other questions I'll be happy to answer them! :)

We had a great stay in June. The rooms are beautiful. The master bath is fantastic and the extra full bath is so nice. We went with the standard view to save points. We requested near the pool as the standard views are on the front side of the building so you either have bus/parking lot or pool/parking lot view. I was fine with the view. Plenty of areas to see animals - lots of viewing windows in the hallways and great decks off the community room and above the lobby. Also the deck going to the savannah was nice and staffed by a friendly and knowledgable CM. Parking is great - that review you linked to was wrong. There is not just one row of parking. Usually 2, sometimes 3 (I think). In any event parking was never an issue. It is the bottom floor of the resort, so CM tells you the section to park in that is under your room. Pool is FANTASTIC. Slide is super fun (for adults and kids). Water play area is also great. Community room is very nice too.

One downside, as you mentioned, is no counter service. I made sure to put this in my survey that Disney sent out. Hoping that if enough of us complain they will add some quick eats by the pool. The dine in restaurant, Sanaa is actually very good. Good enough that we'd go back even if not staying at Kidani.

Other downside might be distance to parks. We always rent a car, so coming and going is not an issue.

I have no qualms recommending it. We are making a rotation through DVC resorts before revisiting, but this is one we will definitely go back to.

We just came back from a stay at Kidani a week and a half ago so since you asked, I'll give you my two cents.:)

Lobby: It's true that the it's smaller than the one at Jambo House, but I agree with many of the reviews I've read in that it has an intimate feel. I found it to be warm, inviting and "homey". I loved all of the interesting African artifacts in the lobby and throughout the resort itself.

Johari Treasures (gift shop): Again, smaller than some resorts but it had everything we needed. I liked the fact that they have a drink station there and we were able to make good use of our refillable mugs several times a day.

Parking: The fact that it's covered is a definite plus. I did find all of the exposed pipes in the ceiling of the parking area to be somewhat odd but it didn't really bother me.

Pool: It was small but we found it to be way less crowded than the one at Jambo House. We liked the pool and had a blast on the slide. My niece also really enjoyed the fun water play area. I believe that once the surrounding trees and plants grow a bit more, the parking area will be much less noticeable.

Room: We were given room 7606 which is a 1-bdr. savanna view. It was absolutely gorgeous and more than enough room for my son and I. We were on the same level as the lobby and just a few feet away from it. It was absolutely a perfect location for us. We had an excellent view of the savanna and we saw many animals. Unfortunately my son got sick while we were there so we were "stuck" at the resort for two full days. I can picture spending an entire week there and not getting bored. I got up early each morning to catch the zebras grazing. It was wonderful!

Counter Service: It's true that there's no counter service option but we just hopped over to The Mara at Jambo House which we didn't find too inconvenient although I can see how it could be a pain with little ones. Next trip we'll have my sister's kids along so we'll just prepare ahead of time by making sure we stock the fridge with some easy to prepare breakfasts and snacks.

Service: The cast members at this resort are obviously very proud of it. They were eager to share their knowledge of Kidani Village, the artwork and animals. We met a couple of lovely ladies from Botswana who were on temporary assignments at the resort and they graciously shared with us what life is like in their home country. The cast members we encountered went out of their way to make our stay very special.

I could go on an on but unfortunately sleep calls. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Kidani Village to anyone. and I look forward to our next trip in 2011! :thumbsup2

We are DVC owner's at AKV. Our first trip "home" to Kidani was this past June. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone either. We also saved points and had a standard view, one bedroom.

Reading some of the other responses, I will add on also.

Lobby - smaller yes, small no. Not sure how big of a lobby people think they need, but I never needed anything that it didn't have. As someone else said, a lot of great artifacts to look at and learn about, and very helpful CMs that are more than willing to talk to you about them and their countries if you are interested.

Available food - yes, there is not a counter service, and I put this in my feedback, but we never really missed it this trip. I just think it would be good to have for the future as we may not do as many TS meals in the future. Jambo House is not that far away, and has CS if you need it. We kept a lot of stuff in our room to offset, but we planned to do that anyway to cut $$$ and do a few more TS meals. Did not eat at Sanaa this time, but have heard good things about the food. My other complaint is that the two places to refill drink mugs are at the pool and in Johari Treasures, which both have a closing time. Never made the decision to get a drink late, like after getting in from the parks, but not sure if that was due to not wanting it, too tired to care, or knowing it wasn't available. This might be true at any resort, so may not be a new issue.

Standard view room, with no direct animal/savanna viewing - not a problem at all. They have large viewing areas in between every "bead" in the "necklace" that is Kidani. On top of that, you have a couple of areas that you can walk out on a balcony on each side of the lobby (including outside the library) and stand or sit in rocking chairs. I did this often early in the morning while the family was still asleep. Also, the area at ground level you can walk out "into" the savanna and view the animals is also really great. Having a CM out there to ask about the animals, etc. was also interesting and informative.

Community Hall - kids loved it, and spent a whole lot of time here over the parks. We had been a few times in the past year (not the norm) and had APs because of that. Our kids are old enough to roam on their own for the most part, so they would ride what they wanted, then head back on their own and often end up at Community Hall playing video games, shooting pool, etc. They participated in a lot of the weekly "tournaments" and things like that which they offer.

Swimming Pool - yes it is smaller, and at times looked a little crowded (although some days not many people at all) but it was never what I would consider so crowded I wouldn't get in if I wanted to, even on the hottest and sunniest days. The slide was great for young and old. My kids were too old to be attracted to the water play area, so can't give a report there, although it looked like a lot of fun for the younger crowd.

Parking - FANTASTIC! Parking was never an issue. Yes, there are exposed pipes, and maybe being Disney they should/could do something to "hide" them, but used to that at pretty much every hotel I ever stayed at with underneath parking, so didn't bother me. There may be some law or code that prevents it, I don't know. Very insignificant compared to being able to park right near an elevator, and go up pretty much right near your room for easy access. Also, never worried about going to the vehicle in the rain, or getting in a really hot car. Much more important than exposed pipes to me.

Rooms - Wonderful. Have heard a lot about them being dark, but didn't experience that as a problem personally. The curtains allow you to keep it pretty dark if you want to sleep in, which is good for me since I tend to wake at first light. Love the extra bathroom with five of us, instead of everyone having to share the same one. Loved being able to sleep five in a one-bedroom with the sleeper chair. We were on the second (ground level) floor and looked out towards the sports courts and porte cochere (covered entry to lobby). All of the landscaping was coming in nicely I thought and gave us an isolated feel, even so close to where there was a lot of activity. Was worried about outside noise, but never noticed it. We always enjoy the full kitchen and use it quite a bit. Plenty big for five of us in a one-bedroom also.

Buses - there was only one time that we were waiting to go to a park (epcot, I think) and had to wait a little while. Not long overall, but kinda frustrating to see three straight buses for MK, and pretty much at least one for everywhere else before the one we wanted came. Still, it probably wasn't more than about ten or fifteen minutes before we were on our way, and that was only the one time. Yes, you are a good ways from most parks, but we made it pretty quick using the buses.

Away from the parks - We like the fact that we are not right on top of the parks. Gives it a feel of being in another world, away from the hustle and bustle that still isn't very far away. Makes it easy to add a relaxing side to our vacation, even being at Disney, and that was more of a priority on this trip because DW had just had some surgery not long before we went. Being old enough to celebrate 50 years of marriage, your parents will probably love this "escape" from the parks. Knowing this side of it as we get older is part of what sold us on purchasing at AKV. To us, it is the best of both worlds.

CMs - they were all fantastic to us, and very friendly and helpful! We did online check in and quickly got our room, even arriving mid-morning.

Hope this helps!

We were there mid August. It's a very beautiful resort. We enjoyed the pool. However, the waterpark area was not working. On the last couple of days, some of the water sprays worked but parts of it was closed. It was a little disappointing since my children were looking forward to it.

Otherwise, it was a nice stay. I think we found that we were walking over to Mara alot to eat. It's not a far walk, but in the August heat, any amount of walking felt tiresome. We did walk as much as we can inside the building. If it wasn't so hot, I think I would have felt it to be a very easy and short walk.

The lobby was beautifully decorated as in the Jambo house, although it was obviously smaller. The shop was also a little small but if we really wanted to shop, I would go to World of Disney.

Although there was a small counter service/bar near the pool, we found we were going to Mara since the selection was lacking.

There were also great viewing areas on the lobby level. The library (just off of the lobby) was very quiet and a great place to relax. There were various kinds of animals that were roaming around during the day.

The buses were adequate. I don't ever remember waiting for a bus for more than 15 mins ... maybe we were just lucky.

All in all, we did enjoy our stay there, but I think next time we would be okay staying at Jambo house and just walking over for the waterpark or pool if we wanted.
:)

Thanks to everyone for their replies and keep them coming...

I am probably going to go with a standard 2br to save points unless I want to split and have 5 days with view and 5 without.

Since some of you have just come back --- I am curious if you can help with rooms.

For my parents we really need to be near the lobby/pool area so they do not have to walk as far.

I am sure I can request that, but curious if you guys know of some exact rooms.

Thanks.

I'm not sure which rooms on the lobby level are 2 bdr. but were in a 1 bedroom savannah view in 7606. We were very close to the lobby, literally about 20 paces away. Obviously across the hallway would be the standard view rooms. I too requested to be near the lobby and got what I asked for.

As an aside, I checked us in online and our room was ready by 10:00 a.m.

We stayed at Kidani for the first time on 16th August. Absolutely loved it! We have previously stayed at AKV but at Jambo House. We felt that Kidani was a step up.
The room was gorgeous and the attention to detail and theming was excellent. It really did feel luxurious.
We have stayed in all the DVC resorts barring BLT and this is up there in my top 2 along with BCV.

The pool was a decent size although I expected it to be a bit larger. But never busy and my boys really enjoyed the water play area.
The staff were all friendly and helpful and we had a most enjoyable meal at Sanaa.

We stayed in a studio, savannah view which was close to the lobby and pool. It was a perfect location and we regularly had 5 giraffes, 4 zebras as well as ostrich and other animals right outside our balcony.:cloud9:

I'm not sure if we were given a disabled access room as our bathroom had a sliding door but it was huge!

We were most disappointed to leave the resort and I cannot wait to stay there again.:cloud9:

Not 100% certain, but I think we were in 7613. It was a standard view one bedroom lock-off, so adding the studio next door would make it a two bedroom. It was the first room in the second bead from the lobby, on the same floor, heading towards the pool. Short walk to the lobby, short walk to the other end of the bead where the elevator was. One floor down the elevator to the parking garage, across the street and through the gate into the pool. Great location for us.

We requested near the pool and an upper floor. We did online check in. When we arrived about 10:30am, there was confusion on whether our assigned room was ready or not. This room was closer to the pool than the original, but on the second floor. We went with it since it was ready. We had been concerned about some reports of noise from buses, and also from rooms above if on a lower floor, but we were thrilled with our room and never heard any of that. Don't know if the people beside us can say the same though.......... :rotfl:

Here are my impressions, from the perspective of a BIG Jambo House (AKL) fan:
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2253537

As with any resort, there are positive and negative aspects, and people will like or dislike it depending on which aspects of a resort they value most highly.

One note though: I wouldn't waste your time with a standard view room. The entire point of the resort are the savanna views - having coffee in the morning with animals outside; having wine in the evening with animals outside; watching the zebra munch grass late at night after getting back from the parks.

At Jambo, you'd at least be able to enjoy the lobby with a standard view room.

We just got back from a week at Kidani. Wow.

I agree that the shortcoming is the lack of any kind of counter service. But we'll live with that (although I'll be sending a letter to DVC about it) for the rest of the experience. But I can easily see that it's not for everyone. To decide, you need to figure out what's most important for everyone going. Location? (BCV or BLT or BWV) Counterservice? (maybe VWL or Jambo) Pool? (BCV) Experience? (Kidani hands down, as long as you like animals!)

The bus rides are long, but no worse than most other bus rides. You really do feel that you're getting away from it. I have to say that this trip (and I do think it has a lot to do with the fact that Kidani is so new), we met the friendliest CMs we've ever met at Kidani. For Disney, that's saying a LOT. I've never been anywhere that every single person has so much pride in their product. Maybe that will change, but I hope not.

Not to take this thread off topic but, over the years I've read a lot of positive reviews of the CMs at AKL. Before staying at Kidani I had no prior experience with staying at AKL but again, many have commented on the excellent service they've received there. I hope it continues because that's what I felt made the resort extra special.

Juts curious since you stayed at all the resorts....which one would you recommend for two Sr. Adults -- they will probably go back to the hotel during the day and want to hang at the pool a little while....while the rest stay at the park. (I know you don't know a lot about us, but just curious)

and Clutter - I totally agree with your statement below.
one question would you say the best place for the Pool is BCV for adults?

I am trying to pick the BEST place for them as this may be there last time going (just because they have BEEN so many times in their life - they may not go back and they are getting up there in age).

OK, bear in mind that we only spent two nights at the resort.............and that we had just come from BLT where we had spent 4 nights............Here goes!!

We stayed in a one bed savannah view (can't remember the room number, sorry!!) and while the decor was lovely it was VERY, VERY dark even in the daytime. The view from the balcony was great, although we had mostly antelope and an ostrich! ha! ha! It was a long, long walk to the lobby.....quicker to walk to Jambo House!

The pool was quite small and seemed very, very crowded compared to BLT. The lack of counter service has already been mentioned, so I won't go there!!! We waited longer for buses than at any other resort...and it felt extremely remote.

My son loved community hall, but it wasn't in a convenient place for the pool. The food was good and the CM's were great. All in all I wouldn't stay there again, but it's all a matter of personal taste! Also stayed at Royal Pacific, BLT and the Treehouses this trip.
Debsx:yay:

We were at Kidani in June and will be there on our next 2 trips. That should give you an idea of what we think of the resort. We loved it! The lack of a counter service does not bother us. We order from Garden Grocer and eat breakfast in the room each day.

We loved the pool. While it is smaller than SAB, it is still a good sized, zero entry pool with an excellent water play area nearby.

In terms of a resort to go with some more senior people, I can say that Kidani is peaceful and beautiful. And the savanna view can't be beat. Two thumbs up for Kidani.

Oh, and no, we don't find the rooms to be dark. Just perfectly themed.

We stayed at Kidani from August 23 - August 30. We loved it. We were on the fourth floor in room 7806 a 1 bedroom savanna view. I requested a room near the pool. We were very close to the lobby and relatively close to the pool. It was the perfect location. We were in Rafiki 7 ( that is how they distinguish the parking areas).

I loved being able to park under the bulding. While we were there they opened an additional section of the buliding for CM's to do test stayes. Once that happened we were not able to park again and had to use the valet for the last three days.

We had no problems at all with the buses. It was nice not sharing a bus with another resort. they pick up Kidani before Jambo so we always got a seat.

The pool was beautiful. It was never crowded when we were there, but the parks weren't busy so I guess it was a slower week. The water play area is great for little kids, but secluded enough that it won't bother adults sitting at the pool. My boys loved the slide.

I do wish it had a counter service, but other then that we loved everything.
