DD(9) woke up @ 3:30 this morning vomiting and now it has turned into a full blown virus including diarrhea. She can not keep anything down. I gave her a little sprite but she did not keep this down?

What do you for your kids when they have a virus? Your advice is greatly appreciated.

My family uses gel phenagrin. you need a script for it and it has to be compounded by a compounding pharmacist but it is awesome stuff. you just rub it on your wrists. Phenagrin does come in pill form but for little ones and even adults who keep vomiting it is great to have it in a gel.
Pedialyte would be better if they will drink it. Ginger ale has helped my girls too. Watch carefully for dehydration or you will end up in the hosptial with one that young. Good luck. As a mom of a kid with GERD I know all to well the pain of vomiting and a little one.

Thanks for your response. I really appreciate it. I did buy crackers and pedialyte this morning.

pepermint settles the tummy down. do the brats diet with her when she is able to keep things down. jello is good too and dont forget my Smallest DD's fav when sick.. Dora or fishy noodle soup with fishy crackers :)
if it lasts more then a day or two call the doc.. poor baby dont want her sick right before her trip .. I hope she feels better a sick tummy is an awfull thing. Instead of spite try ginger ale or sometimes flat coke works too.. fenagrin is good too they can also give her a sepository if she cant keep anything down ,, i know yuck but hell if your that sick ya dont really care anymore.. if she dosent like pedialight gatoraid works too.. dont make the drinks too cold or she will vomit again room temp with 1 -2 ice cubes is best. if nothing else let her suck ice chips..Poor thing I hope she feels better .. hugs 2 both you!!

I found this on webmd - hope she's feeling better soon (and that you don't catch it too!:goodvibes)

After vomiting has stopped for one hour, drink 1 fl oz of a clear liquid every 20 minutes for one hour. Clear liquids include apple or grape juice mixed to half strength with water, rehydration drinks, weak tea with sugar, clear broth, and gelatin dessert. Avoid orange juice, grapefruit juice, tomato juice, or lemonade. Avoid apple or grape juice if you also have diarrhea. Do not drink milk products, alcohol, or carbonated drinks such as sodas.
If you do not have any more vomiting, increase the amount of fluid you drink to 8 fl oz during the second hour. If you are not vomiting after the second hour, make sure that you continue to drink enough to prevent dehydration.
When you are feeling better, begin eating clear soups, mild foods, and liquids until all symptoms are gone for 12 to 48 hours. Gelatin dessert, dry toast, crackers, and cooked cereal are good choices. Try to stay away from strong food odors, which can make nausea worse.

For the sake of the OP: the BRATT diet is
Bananas
Rice
Apples
Tea
Toast

you would think oooh apples no way too acidy....it's the acid from the apples that will neutralize the acid in your stomach.
Tea...we did warm iced tea
Rice is good for the diarrhea(helps to bind)

This was our Dr's advice after returning from Disney with our then 7 yr old DD losing 4 lbs after being sick for a week + in Disney.

It's going around both my kids had it last week and the Doctor said that it can be anyhwere from 7-10 days for it to run it's course even though everyone is different. Good luck Hope for a quick recovery

I used to also think they had to last it out for 7-10 days...until I switched pediatricians. They prescribe the phenergan suppositories. Stops the vomiting usually within the hour and they are eating that night. He said there is no harm to stopping a virus early.

LOVE IT!!!

Popsicles. It is a good way to get small amounts of liquid at a time. Pedialyte makes popsicles.

I love when people post GREAT health related advice. Thank you!! You are absolutely right! This is what we tell our patients and I know first hand, that it works with my kids. I guess as parents, we get scared when we see more coming out, than going into our kids...LOL, but usually with a stomach bug, they are down for the count for a few days and not using up their reserves, so it equals out in the end. KUDOS for the super advice.

I agree with the PP. All too often parents try to force a ton of fluid at a time and wonder why it keeps coming back up. I tell people to give a medicine cup full of pedialyte, gatorade whatever the kid will drink then NOTHING for at least 20-30 mins and if it stays down then another medicine cup full. And for those on bottles only put 1 ounce in the bottle at a time. Good luck and the most important info for you would be to WASH YOUR HANDS(often and before you eat or even touch your face)

I'm in the middle of this right now. This bug has run through the whole family, me first, DH then youngest DS and last night at 4am oldest DS (5yo) and he's been throwing up ever since. He had a tablespoon of Pedialyte and threw up so nothing more for a little bit. He's laying down watching tv :( Poor guy.

Morning everyone. DD is doing much better this morning. She was able to eat a little something last night without bringing it up but she did have to go to the bathroom. She slept through the night and is doing okay this morning. I kept her home again to fully recooperate.

Thanks again for all of the advice.
