One week from today, my 11 year-old son and I are headed to the World. We have done several Disney trips, but this is our first as DVC members and our first to OKW. Anyway, sort of as a "present", I told my son he could plan the trip himself. He knows what he likes and does not like, and since we are now DVC members, I am trying to avoid "commando mode". I gave him park and parade times and EMH days and he has busily planned and re-planned. I even made ADR's based on his selection and timing. He is not maximizing our time, but I am trying to stay out of it and let him do whatever he wants. This is the most excited I have ever seen him about a trip.

Anyone else tried this approach? What were your results?

We have not tried this approach yet, but it does sound interesting. We did have DD13 and DS9 make a list of 2 restaurants they would like to try and then made our ADR's so that everyone got at least 1 of their favorite places.

Hope you enjoy your trip. :sunny:

I really love your idea. He may modify as he goes along.
It really sounds like a great way to show him you trust him.

Sorry, whenI read your title, I thought you were talking about "family" planning!

I know that I don't want to have any more babies. Just can't schedule them around my vacations! Lol!

It's a little harder for me with 4, but I do like to give everyone a part of the planning. One of the great things is that we all agree on so many things with Disney that it is not too hard to accomodate anyone's wishes. My 2 older boys (10,13) love Disney Quest so they always pick a night there. Now my 65 lb DS10 tells me that he has to have the dining plan again!LOL Of all the things he liked best-he comes up with that one! We had the free dining package last Aug. and DS ate like a king for a week. The bottom line is that we love our Disney vacations and planning is a part of the fun-so I think it is great to include the kids :thumbsup2

I think its a great idea. I wouldnt worry about maximizing your time, as dvc members you have many trips ahead of you to do other things. I still have a great time planning our vacations, Im sure his excitement planning this trip will show during the trip as well.

Great idea :thumbsup2

Wow! That is a great idea...I have 2 sons not sure that would work or if I can give up control!! I am a control freak with OCD!!

I think it's a great idea and educational too. Just learning how to plan for things is wonderful. :thumbsup2 Have a great vacation!

Our kids are too young yet, but we do let them give input into restaurants and rides. This sounds like a great exercise for when they are eleven and twelve or so - and with two kids, it would also be an exercise in teamwork.

Maybe next trip (they will be eight and nine already next time they go), we will turn over a day to them to plan.
