My 6yo DD has (thankfully) inherited her mother and my love of books. Unfortunately, I'm having a heckuva time trying to come up with new things for her to read. She's beyond the basic 1st reader type books, but isn't quite at the level yet that she could pick up a chapter book and breeze through it. I'd like to find something that is both challenging (without being too much for a 6yo to handle) as well as interesting to a girl who loves all things pink and princessy. :teeth:

The Disney Little Golden Books are about the level that I'm looking for, but she's already read most of those that I've been able to find. So, I thought I'd come to the nice folks over hear to see if you guys had any ideas.

Thanks in advance...

Have you done Frog and Toad yet? They were some of the first books my kids read. They are cute books! Not real princessy, though!

This is the opposite of princessy but has she read Max Makes A Million by Maira Kalman? It is a picture book but the poetry is great. It is very Beat and my girls loved it (correction, they still love it at 8 and 14. it gets reread all the time)

The Magic Tree House books, especially the earliest ones are very good. They are chapters, but not difficult.

The Fairy Realm books are good, but they might be a tad hard at this point, maybe good for you to read together.

Junie B. Jones are good, but sometimes the "Junie-isms" can be a bit hard. They are stories about a girl in Kdg and then first so they appeal to kids your DD's age.

DD loved the two "Charming Ponies" books, not too difficult. Also, at B&N, there are a series of "Word Bank" books, ranging from 50 to 300 words in the word bank. They are excellent for controlled vocabulary and cute stories. Even tho DD is past them in terms of difficulty, she still will pick them up and read them because she likes the story.

Have you tried Boxcar Kids, A-Z Mysteries, Bob books, Junie B Jones, are just a few.

We have also enjoyed titles such as,

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Goodnight Gorilla
Alexander books
All the Dr Suess books
George and Martha books
All the Early step into reading books

All of these can be found on Amazon and at most public libraries. Which brings me to libraries being an awesome source. Yes, even in this age of automated this and that there are still Librarians! I am so glad to walk into a place that hasnt totally gone high tech!
I HTH and what great pride you must have in your little reader! If you havent already, get a bookcase to display all her favorite books! My kids love having their own personal collection!

Captain Underpants! :thumbsup2

Oh wait, that's not very "princess-y", is it? :rolleyes1 That's what happens when you have two boys.

My little one, who used to abhor reading, LOVES the Junie B. Jones books! :thumbsup2

Thanks, everyone! Some of those look like exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.

I'd been seeing those "MAgic Treehouse" books around, and it looked like something the rugrat would like, but I wasn't sure if it would be too advanced for her. She's way beyond the books that her kindergarten teacher sends home as "homework" (reads them in about five minutes, if that), but most of the "chapter" books I've seen seemed like they might be a bit much. I'll have to give those another look.

Thanks again!

I liked the Amelia Bedelia books when I was her age. Not really princess-y, but they are cute, funny books :)

I also agree with the poster who recommended the Frog and Toad books, those are really good for your DD's age group.

And then when she gets a little older you should get her into the Ramona Quimby series. I loved those :thumbsup2

Both of my girls love the Junie B Jones books. I bought a ton on Ebay, for not a lot of money.

My oldest really liked the boscar kids. They are a bit harder to read but very good.

My youngest liked clifford books. Some are longer, and worth buying. They even have some easy chapter books.

Some really adorable books, are the David series. Both my girls love them, but not alot of words- very cute to look at, but pricey. I'd recc. getting them from the library.

The Junie B. Jones books are chapter books so if she is not yet reading them, you might want to wait. My son loved these, but he was closer to 7 when he started reading them.

I'd start with Amelia Bedelia. They are great books for 1st graders! :goodvibes My son also liked the Berenstain Bear series as well as the Arthur series. And you can't go wrong with anything by Shel Silverstein -- very funny and fun poems for both kids AND adults! I recommend A Light In The Attic and The Giving Tree.

Love Amelia Bedelia, and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. Mrs. Piggle Wiggle might still be a bit advanced, though. We really liked the ABC Mysteries, too.

Bob, have you guys discoverd Hank The Cowdog, yet? Absolutely hilarious read, and there are a bunch on CD/tape at the library.

Henry and Mudge -these are "Chapter books" but only have a few sentences per page and
Amanda Pig books byJean VanLeewen again in the style of a chapter book -but only a few sentences per page

Henry and Mudge books (about a boy and his dad and his cousin Annie) or any books by the Henry and Mudge author Cynthia Rylant might suit your needs.
:)

Great author is Patricia Polacco. Not necessarily a reader, though.

We also liked Nate the Great books. Chapters, but few lines per page. a little odd, though!

My DD loved the Henry and Mudge books when she was reading at about that level.

I loved Pippi Longstockings. They might be a tad bit advanced but were an easy read. I was like your little one, by 4th grade my favorite book was National Velvet.

Hank the Cowdog books are great, but not very princessy at all.
